Toadies – Possum Kingdom / 1994

Oh man, this song brings me straight back to Middle School. Back to the days when I knew the lyrics to every song on the radio. Music was so much simpler then. Fuzzy guitars, a simple hook, some reverb, and a death threat or two and you were set. Apparently there is a lot of discussion/controversy over the song’s content and the band even have vampire fans because of it. Weird. I’ve never heard another song by Toadies. Am I missing something?

Yeah, definitely check out this band some more. If you like this one, “Tyler” is similarly creepy and menacing. Toadies (no “the,” like Pixies) are one of the best altogether and certainly the most underrated of post-Nirvana radio bands. Eight different Everclear songs still get played on the radio, but the band behind “Possum Kingdom” remains mostly anonymous. It’s an unjust world.

I Come From The Water. Your 7th grade self should never have overlooked that one. You’d be a different person now, if even the only difference was your blog.

Wow. This song is the business. This was the teenage angsty song of choice in between ‘Smells Like teen Spirit’ and ‘Bulls on Parade.’ Kudos to Sam for the ‘I Come from the Water’ reference. Don’t forget ‘I Burn’ – another classic. Remember these guys touring with Spacehog? Bring that lineup back…
