when I wake up tomorrow will you still feel the same?
♫ Goldfinger – Here In Your Bedroom / 1996
I’ve never really sat down to make my own “Desert Island Discs” list but if I did (and I wont) Goldfinger’s debut would be a strong contender. My youthful love of Ska music may possibly be traced back to the bass-line from “Here In Your Bedroom.” That thing hit me like a rock when I first heard it and it’s still pretty damn fresh today. It’s pretty interesting to see how much the music scene has changed since ‘96. When this album came out it was a hit in High Schools and on College Radios across the country. Imagine cover art like that on an album coming out these days and having it taken seriously. Anyway, if you never got into this album, or have just let it escape your ears for a decade, then I highly suggest you get on it. Not only does it have “Here In Your Bedroom” but it boasts the fantastically goofy ex-girlfriend ode “Mable,” the self explanatory “My Girlfriend’s Shower Sucks,” my favorite love song of that year “Pictures,” and the best song with chorus of “Fuck L.A.” in “The City With Two Faces” (Criminally left off the Mix-Tape for L.A.). I’ve seen Goldfinger live more times than any other Flashback band, and they are up there for any band, really. After 1997’s possibly-even-more-awesome album, Hang Ups, they slowly slipped off the wagon but I still got 2 near perfect albums that will always bring me straight back to the glory days of high school. And I will still go see them live any day they come through. Circle pit, baby!
