Walking into The Henry Fonda I was more than pleasantly surprised to see Haim on stage as a surprise replacement opening act. The 3 sisters ripped through the 3 songs we know and they were good. The real surprise was the electricity they blasted through their new stuff. They ended the stellar set with each of them on a drum kit pounding away in a rumbling group drum solo that had every eye and ear in the room locked in. Truly stunning.
An opening act this good would be a worry for any headliner and having never seen The xx before, I have to say I was a bit worried too. Music as delicate as theirs can sometimes seem thin on stage. I feel like I could just be listening to the record really loud at home instead. This was not the case here.
With Romy and Oliver up front and Jamie working the wall of boards, kits, and knobs behind, they opened the set with the just released “Angeles.” As beautiful as the song is, it hadn’t given me hope for an evolution in their sound. Seems a bit like xx-lite. Needless to say it was perfectly rendered on stage. And then so was the song after. And the one after that. They alternated only 1 or 2 old against a new and the change-up worked seamlessly. Every note was spot on and I even discovered new elements of songs by watching them play it live. A bass line here. A click-beat there. I was enthralled. And the other new jams!? Holy crap. “Angels” is just a tease. Mere foreplay for the aural sex these guys are cooking up for Coexist. They have learned some new moves and it feels good. Jamie slips house beats into the classic xx sound and the results pulse and groove wonderfully.
Anyway, enough blather. They have a hell of a lot of dates lined up so just go see them. You’ll probably have to sell your sibling for tickets though because it seems like just about everywhere sold out in seconds.
