Karl Kling: The VINYL MOON Interview

The Burning Ear and Karl Kling go waaaaaay back. As an integral member of RAC, Karl has been on our radar both through his remixes and contributions to the live show. Watching him branch out into solo stuff was exciting to say the least. Perhaps the only thing more exciting was being able to feature one of those tracks,  “I Will Wait”, on VINYL MOON. Karl has been playing on the RAC/Big Data tour and I recently caught up with him before a huge LA show.

RKCB: The VINYL MOON Interview

For a band whose music is tailor made for nighttime activities it made sense that there wasn’t much revealed about them in the early days. No photos, no website, and no live show until pretty recently. For some bands that feels like a gimmick, but now that those things have emerged it is clear that Riley and Casey are simply all about the music. They weren’t going to put energy into anything that detracted from the songs. And it shows. Its been an honor to hear them evolve and reveal over this past year and I’m proud to present this Interview I recently had with them to celebrate the inclusion of “Baptize” on VINYL MOON Volume 1.

Pr0files: The VINYL MOON Interview

When you have been running a blog as long I’ve been doing The Burning Ear you see a lot of bands come and go. Grab your ear and then give it right back as they drift along the various paths life sets up. If you are lucky, you get to catch these bands as they reform into new projects down the line. Tacking on the extra years of life experience and refined vision to create something even greater than before. And so it was with great joy when I first heard about a project that featured Danny from one of TBE’s favorite bands, Baby Monster. The new project was in major infancy but there was something very magical there. Well, you already know what I mean if you have heard Pr0files’ debut jam “Call Yourself A Lover”. And here we are. Years later and with a handful of fog-filled dance parties under my belt I’m proud to present a Pr0files jam on the first edition of Vinyl Moon. It was a long time certainty on my end. I’m just glad they said yes.

Lostboycrow: The VINYL MOON Interview

Lostboycrow only had 2 tracks released when I first heard of him. But just a few listens to “HiyHiy” and I knew I wanted to feature it on Vinyl Moon. That was in January. What a treat its been to watch Lostboycrow evolve from then to the impending powerhouse he is today. Half a dozen songs later and each one reveals a new layer to this deeply layered artist. And then there is the live show…. just go. But first stick around for our Twitterview with the man himself below.

Rose Quartz: The VINYL MOON Interview

The first time I ever even heard of Rose Quartz was when I saw them open for Generationals in the middle of the SoCal desert. I was so stoked by what I saw and heard that I invited them to be on Vinyl Moon on the spot. They are a powerhouse of songwriting, live charisma, and good vibes. I am honored to be releasing a very special instrumental version of their mega jam “Leaving Now” on VINYL MOON Volume 1. To celebrate I got to catch the band for a bit as they head out on tour.

Robyn Sherwell Postcards

Robyn Sherwell: The VINYL MOON Interview

My favorite Robyn Sherwell track is also the title track to her debut EP Islander. As Vinyl Moon members know, “Islander” is a fierce foot stomper of an anthem that takes stands up and demands attention. However, dive into the rest of Robyn’s catalog and you will uncover a much tenderer side. Songs like “Love Somebody” and “Tightropes” are gentle and soulful, drifting closer to indie-folk than rock anthem. But thats just what I love about Robyn. She has a lot to express and isn’t afraid to let it out in different ways. So whatever your gateway Robyn Sherwell song is, make sure you stick around for the full ride. Its a beautiful one.

Catch Robyn on tour and pick up her debut EP Islander which is out now. And read on for our Twitterview with her.

[SXSW INTERVIEW] SPEAK fill us in on SXSW wisdom & their hometown of Austin

Austin’s very own SPEAK came by the RV and welcomed us to town with some tips on SXSW, stylin Texas-style, and what they have coming up soon.

We partnered with the awesome local clothing company California Limited on an adventure to Austin, Texas for the 2014 SXSW music festival. The Burning Ear spent the week having breakfast with some of our favorite bands. We discussed music, touring, SXSW, California, and most importantly, we ate breakfast tacos.

[SXSW INTERVIEW] Strange Talk & The Griswolds tried to annex my RV for Australia

Please forgive the guys in Strange Talk and The Griswolds for being awesome. Its probably not their fault. Gotta be something to with the ozone or something down under. Luckily for us I got to cram all 9 members of both bands into the RV at SXSW for a bit of political debate and a few gardening tips.

Strange Talk’s awesome album Cast Away is out on April 29th.

Pompeya-interview

[INTERVIEW] Pomepya talk about SXSW, Compliments, Satellite radio, and make an awesome picture for TBE!

Get to know my favorite Russian tropical indie band Pompeya before they play The Spare Room tonight with Beginners! Its their last show in LA so we are going to celebrate their tour, SXSW, and most importantly the awesome piece of art they made for me…

TBE: Where are you right now? Paint us a visual picture!
(They painted a literal picture! Awesome!)

Pompeya Ear

Pompeya: LA is busy. There is a lot of commotion, it’s very bright. But it is also inspiring, and we enjoy working here. Unless we are stuck in traffic. Well actually, traffic is fine because there is KCRW.

How would you describe your music to my grandma?
Melodramatic popular music.

How was your recent experience at SXSW?
There definitely was a lot to learn from this experience. The shows are very quick, no time for sound check, and the venues were not that nice all the time. A lot of stress, but also a lot of opportunity. For the first time – we feel good!

What is the best AND worst compliment your music has received?
The best is when people from unexpected demographics love our music. Something like “My daugheter is only 4 years old, and her favorite bands are Depeche Mode and Pompeya” or “My parents like Pompeya, and usually hate everything I listen to.” The worst compliment? Probably when people try to put inappropriate tags like “chill wave” with our music. These are very specific and we feel our music is of much broader influences and tastes than just one sub-genre that was popular for two years.

What is your proudest moment as a band so far?
It is still being here as the band — making a band, being in a band. Every step we reach, every new height, every new adventure, reminds us why we do this.

What is your next big dream or milestone as a band?
There are no dreams, only plans!

What is your dream collaboration?
We would like to collaborate with Bryan Ferry of Roxy Music.

What other bands are you guys listening too in the tour bus/van/boat right now?
We’re listening to the radio! On the road from Phoenix to LA we found a really nice station on Sirius XM – 1st Wave. They play cool 80’s like Duran Duran, Roxy Music, etc. This is our favorite type of music.

What is your favorite food/snack when touring?
Thai and steaks here in U.S. We are really miss the Russian food! We miss borsch!

What can we expect from your upcoming EP?
You can expect 4 new songs! Well, actually 3 (“Satellite” you’ve heard already). Generally, the sound is fresh, but still the Pompeya the fans know. It’s a nice introduction of what to expect from the LP, too.

Caught-A-Ghost---Twitterview

Twitter Interview with Caught A Ghost

I’ve been in love with Caught A Ghost’s “secular gospel music” since I first heard it back in 2011. Then I laid eyes & ears on their amazing live set during their LA residency and I knew they were going places. Its been a long wait  but their debut album Human Nature is finally out and the world is a better place because of it. I caught up with Jesse and Tessa yesterday on Twitter and talked about our mutual home base of LA, collaborators, and staying healthy on tour.

[SXSW INTERVIEW] Wild Cub talk SXSW strategy, remixes, and… aand… achoo!

I sat down with the guys in Wild Cub during SXSW to talk about the value of free food at SXSW, the short attention span of music fans, and the value of the remix (something Wild Cub has always used well).

[SXSW INTERVIEW] RAC & Joywave talk collaborations, touring, and the art of the remix

RAC is one of my all time favorite remixers who is finally coming into his own with a solid set of original jams. Joywave is one of my all time favorite bands who evolve in fantastic ways with each release. Needless to say, sitting down with both artists was a big honor. We talked about touring, remixing, and how all of them ended up collaborating recently.

[SXSW INTERVIEW] Hunter Hunted on band roles, touring,

Hunter Hunted have fought a long and winding road to their current position as rising stars of feel-good indie pop. We let them rest their road-weary behind in the RV and got some stories from the road as well as dirt on who is the “tour dad” and who writes their infamous Instagram captions…
