[ARTICLE] The New Tastemakers

The author is actually a woman. Oops.

Five weeks ago I had the pleasure of speaking with a Burning Ear reader who was writing an article on the way music blogs are changing the industry. May Wildman was writing the article for The University of Maryland’s daily newspaper. She asked me questions. We talked. Or rather, I talked. She listened patiently. Perhaps napped. Who can tell. Anyway, When I followed up a few days ago to see how it was received she said the paper never published it. Something about “end of the year and a lot of other material to publish.” Just cause that paper dropped the ball doesn’t mean Wildman’s work should go unread. After all, It’s pretty damn interesting. Remix Party Playlist Vol. 61 – 3.22.2012 [Whitney Houstan, Hall & Oats, Beck, Grum, and more…]

Top of the morning.

With craziness of SXSW nearly a week behind us, its feels good to be home… and although I pride myself on my party prowess- I think it will take weeks to fully recover from that madness.  51 shows in four days… that has to be a record for an individual party.  In the mean time (back in reality), I’m supplementing my diet with extreme amounts of caffeine and sugar.  If Im diagnosed with diabetes in a week, we’ll certainly know why.

Its only thursday, but with the combo of caffeine and the sweet tuneage below, a spontanouse dance party at work is absolutely necessary.  Get down with your self.

Kick it.

Dubstep Roundup Vol. 29 – 3.10.2012 [The SoniXx, The Roots, Skream, Guinevere, and more…]

Ch-ch-yeah.  Your favorite dub-dealer is back with those bass chunes.

Im down here in beautiful Austin, Tx (although the weather is miserably raining today) getting ready for our TBE Showcase.  This city takes on what is just an electric life during SXSW.  So many people and so much to do, the possibilites in this town are endless.  If you havent been, I highly recommend it.  Im about to go pick up Brandon up at the airport in about five minutes; which by the way, we’ve never met before.  I’ll update you on whether we want to punch each other in the faces tomorrow or not.

On with the jams.

♫ The Sonixx ft. Laura Newman – You Dont Like Me /  Its exciting for me to see the artists we cover grow and do big things.  Last week Gigamesh released his debuted music video- this week we’ve got The SoniXx releasing his first video.  Check it out below.

♫ Eminem – Lose Yourself (Cry Wolf Remix) / The last of rather impressive set of remixes by Cry Wolf.  You can catch bass lords Cry Wolf at out SXSW Showcase closing out both Friday and Saturday nights.

[VIDEO] Gotye – “Easy Way Out”

A great song from a great album by a great artist gets a treatment from a great directing team and results in a great video. Sometimes the week just starts great. Oh Yeah Wow are the team behing Set Sail’s awesome claymation video for “Boat Song” and perhaps the most exciting directing crew down under.

The Best SONGS of 2011 – Pt. 2 (July-Dec)

Songs are pretty amazing things. It’s magical that such a small thing can be so powerful. In the blink of an eye a song can make you smile, dance, cry, think, laugh, etc. These are the ones that did all those things for me the second half of 2011.  Read more

The Best REMIXES of 2011 – Pt. 2 (July-Dec)

Ahem! Excuse me. If you thought you were taking a break because last weekend was New Years Eve then forget it. This is the first weekend of 2012 and it’s time to kick things off right. Below is a list of the best remixes of the past 6 months and they are quite restless so please let them out this weekend. Walks and feeding are optional.

Any glaring errors in judgement? Any additions you would make? Any good pizza in L.A.?

25. ♫ Humans – Avec Mes Mecs (Joseph Martin Remix) / Epic song. Turned up to 11. Who knew that all we had to was party?

24. ♫ The Static Jacks – Into The Sun (RAC Maury Mix) / I like my bass (guitar) down low.

23. ♫ Kings of Leon – Sex On Fire (Al Fingers’ Juicy Remix) / Nope. It wasn’t all a dream. It really happened and it was good.

22. ♫ Beethoven – Moonlight Sonata (Sound Remedy Remix) / Don’t fuck with a classic unless you are going to do it justice. That goes double for my dog Beethoven. Good thing justice was served! Plus: wobbles I can stand.

21. ♫ Enrique Iglesias – I Like How It Feels (DWNTWN remixxx) / The original was on in every clothing store in the world for a while there. Making it massively enjoyable again is a huge feat.

20. ♫ Jeremy Glen – New Life (Amtrac Remix) / Soulful pipes strapped on express Amtrac headed for Danceville. Two tickets please.

19. ♫ Jessie and The Toy Boys – Push It (Doctor Rosen Rosen Remix) / It’s all about the chopped up “ohh” beat. Ride it.

18. ♫ Body Language – Holiday (RAC Mix) / Honey baked happiness! Candy coated danceability! Sugar roasted rhythms!

17. ♫ M83 – Midnight City (Alcala Remix) / One of the top remixed songs of the year had stiff competition but Alcala’s slow build explodes the original into the stratospheric massiveness that it always hinted at.

16. ♫ Grouplove – Colours (Foster the People Remix) / Grouplove and Foster The People? It’s like multiplying rainbows together. Of course it’s gonna be awesome.

15. ♫ EverythingEverything – Final Form (Cats Hero Remix) / One of the most spastic bands around stay exactly that way. And all is good in the world.

14. ♫ Gotye – Somebody That I Used to Know (feat. Kimbra) (The 14th Minute Remix) / Piano! There were exactly 427 remixes of this song last year. Only The 14th Minute’s makes this list. (Although some others actually were pretty good)

13. ♫ Unouomedude – Frequency (The Soundmen Remix) / The Soundmen, man. The mutha-freakin Soundmen. Get some.

12. ♫ Angus and Julia Stone – Big Jet Plane (Stern* Disco Remix) / I almost scared to hear the original for fear of ruining the wide-legged elastic swagger of this hot buttered groover. So sexy.

11. ♫ Rihanna – We Found Love (Viceroy Remix) / Don’t hate. Dance. And make weird noises to the beat. No better or more refreshing take on this saturated jam.

10. ♫ Theophilus London – Why Even Try (RAC Remix) / A thousand fantastic RAC mixes ago there was this one. The soundtrack to an indie carnival fun house. Classic.

9. ♫ We Barbarians – Headspace (Grouplove + Captain Cuts Remix) / Remix tag team! This one goes off the high ropes at 0:40 for a full mat slam that keeps me pumped and robot dancing for like forever.

8. ♫ Citizens! – True Romance (Gigamesh Remix) / From the moment Gigamesh drops that beat it’s all over. The windows are down and I’m practically climbing out the window to get the whipping wind on my face. Thank goodness for seat belts.

7. ♫ Kelly Clarkson – Mr Know It All (It’s The DJ Kue Remix!) / DJ Kue absolutely crushed it this year. Radio pop has never had such a generous friend. You tell ’em Kelly! DJ Kue got your back!

6. ♫ Donnis feat. Dev – Ring My Bell (DJ Hotsauce remix) / THE remix of the summer.

5. ♫ M83 – Midnight City (remixé par Who Killed JR) / The piano intro. The faraway creep of the familiar song. The tweaked out grooves. The way all that goes bonkers fireworks style when it drops. A late entry to the “Midnight City” remix game but an absolute crusher in my book.

4. ♫ KAMP! – Cairo (Moullinex Remix) / This one gets stuck in your head and then lays little dancing critters that bust synchronized dance routines every time you poorly sing along.

3. ♫ Lana Del Rey – Video Games (Hannes Fischer Video Remix) / The best slow-build payoff ever. Turn it up loud. Goose bumps. Every time.

2. ♫ Tim & Jean – I Can Show You (Jump Jump Dance Dance Remix) / Just try to hold back the sunshine blazing from every pore of this jam. I will dance every time I hear this remix. Guaranteed.

1. ♫ The Notorious B.I.G – Everyday Struggle (Frogs in Socks BiG Bootleg) / Just as you get your head around the odd and minimal beat you realize that Biggie sounds clearly than ever and everything fits in such an awkwardly perfect way you wonder how such a thing could exist. Then you understand that the world is full of all sorts of miracles that nobody can explain.

Remix Roundup Vol. 58 – 12.21.2011 [Dada Life, Fleetwood Mac, Yelle, Dada LIfe, and more…]

Holy hickory haystacks!  Major problems on the internet connection frontier today.  If you follow me on the twitter, you know that I was trying to have this up in the AM.  Where is M.I.A. and Flux Pavilion when you need them?

Anyway, we’ve got the holidays smacking us in our faces right now, which means the year is pretty much over,… Soo I just put together a steaming pile of bangers for your end of the year listening pleasure.  Open your ears and take these glorious gems to bed with you.

Attention: For those in the Seattle area- I’m throwing a huge party at The Tacoma Art Museum on New Years Eve.  You can find all the info you need HERE.  Warning:  Bass slaps in that face of yours will be frequent.  WORLD!!

♫ Sparkadia – Mary (Aeons Remix) Mix For Mastering

♫ Gym Class Heroes (featuring Neon Hitch) – Ass Back Home (SmarterChild & Oxymorrons Remix) / Pretty impressive, especially when you consider that this tune is a collaberatoin of all pilot artists.  Don’t blink, SmarterChild is starting to look like a heavyweight.

Brandon’s TBE Digest 31 – [12.11.2011] New Jams, Remixes, & Covers!

Artwork by Jacob Youngblood Ziegler

Brandon’s TBE Digest is a place where I gather up all the recent jams that are worth a listen (or 10) but don’t necessarily need their own post. Here you will find new tracks by known bands, remixes, covers, and even mashups if they are interesting. My favorites of the lot are in bold.

This may be the last Digest I do like this. I’d really like to take the time to give the best of these tracks the solo post they deserve. If anyone feels strongly about this news leave it in the comments below. Otherwise rock on Wayne and rock on Garth.

Making Mirrors

[LP] Gotye – MAKING MIRRORS (w/ “In Your Light”)

if only i could always be just as i am right here

♫ Gotye – Eyes Wide Open (previously posted)

Gotye released on of last years Best Songs with the galloping “Eyes Wide Open” (above) and then did it again this year with much calmer (and even more infectious?)  “Somebody That I Used To Know.” With a track record like that leading up to his new album Making Mirrors it’s easy to wonder what else Wally De Backer could possibly have in store. Lucky for us the notoriously eclectic Aussie has a whole bouquet of gems lined up on his 3rd LP. (stream the whole album below)

♫ Gotye – In Your Light

Tracks like new singe “I Feel Better” and new personal favorite “In Your Light” (above) kick up the energy and bring some throwback soul to their tales of ecstatic love. “State Of The Art” raises eyebrows with its robot-styled “ode” to technology. “Smoke and Mirrors” and “Bronte” reel things back and let Gotye’s delicate arrangements compliment his great voice. But really nothing showcases the man’s talent for tender songwriting than “Giving Me A Chance.” An apology in it’s most beautiful form. A appreciative soul knowing the value of his second chance. So many songs beg for forgiveness but none ever give thanks for being given it.

Making Mirrors is certainly not a thrill a minute joyride but De Backer sure knows the value of variety on an album. No songs sound the same and if you aren’t in love with one or two then I guarantee there will be 3 or 4 you do love. Something else you can love is the fact that Gotye has made a handful of different videos for various tracks. Besides the fantastic one we know for “Somebody That I Used To Know,” there are animated clips for “State Of The Art,” “Easy Way Out” and “Bronte” (best!). Making Mirrors has already become the most successful album in Australia this year and it;s no surprise why. Any country should be as proud and supportive of talent like this. Stream the album (and download bonus track “Showdown Below My Sombrero”) below. Read more

TBE Battle

[BATTLE] M83’s “Midnight City” mashed up with both Kanye West & Gotye?!

TBE Battle is a new series on The Burning Ear where I will occasionally put up two tracks that make for interesting comparison, debate, or whatever. Let the battle begin in the comments below! There is also a contest running to design the TBE Battle logo that will be used in each post. See below!

♫ The White Panda – Midnight Life (M83 & Kanye West)

♫ M83 & Gotye – Somebody At Midnight (Nimrodbz mashup)

So besides being two of the best songs of the year, M83’s “Midnight City” and Gotye’s amazing “Somebody That I Used To Know” are also two of the most remixed. Kaye West is also very popular, I hear. I am personally digging all the attention these jams are getting so now it’s time to see how they hold up as mashups? But these tracks raise some questions: Does adding Kanye West to any track just seem desperate or does add undeniable swagger? Is mashing up two of the years best songs sacrilegious or genius? Dou have a favorite? Or have the originals just been bent over a dirty kitchen table and ruined?

CONTEST: TBE Battle is going to be a semi-regular feature so it is going to need a logo or artwork or whatever so all you graphic designers get to work on something that can represent these Battles every time. Send it to me by next Monday (Oct 17) at midnight (EST) and let the battles begin!

Remix Roundup Vol. 52 – 9.20.2011 [Midnight Conspiracy, Edwin van Cleef, MEN, Hearts Revolution, and more…]

Welcome back.  I understand its Tuesday… In case you missed last week, I outlined my change in posting philosophy.  In fact we’re setting a new TBE record for the shortest time between Remix Roundups.  Thats right, you’re now apart of some very dramatic world history.  Go ahead and tell your friends about it.  Does this new philosophy always mean I will be posting this often?  Not always, but sometimes.  Also, check out the contest we’re running for tickets to live shows in your city (you’ve got options).

So, without further adieu, turn your speaker boxes up and jam the (F) out.  PEACE.
