Stevie Listens to his Playlist

A Playlist for Stevie’s Postcard Project

So my little buddy Stevie is embarking a pretty big journey tomorrow and I’m trying to help him calm his nerves. He started this Kickstarter project to build some friends to send postcards to. If thats confusing you can check out his project because he explains it better than me. However, I did make him a playlist for his travels and figured I would share it with you guys!

When I played him the playlist he had a few comments I’ll include here. Enjoy and please do check out his project!

1. Coldplay – Postcards From Far Away

Yeah, thats me sending postcards from far away!

2. Paula & Karol – Goodnight Warsaw

Well not “Goodnight” because I haven’t met Warsaw yet so I’m gonna sing “Hello Warsaw!”

3. Rogue Wave – Postage Stamp World

Yea I think thats my new world…

4. Joywave – London

Its dark and weird but I like it. Did I just describe my future feelings on London?

5. Fake Blood – London

Even darker! Woah!

6. RDGLDGRN – Lootin In London

I’ll certainly try not to… and I’ll give stern looks to any looters I see!

7. Jukebox The Ghost – Postcard

A love song about Postcards! My favorite kind of love song!

8. Friendly Fires – Paris
9. Magic Man – Paris
10. Explosions In The Sky – Postcard From 1952
11. Little Dragon – Paris
12. Kate Nash – Paris

Wow its Paris overload time! I was just dancing!

13. Jens Lekman – A Postcard to Nina

Yeah you gotta explain to Nina’s dad whats going on. Sounds confusing!

14. Is Tropical – Berlin
15. The Young Professionals – Fuck Off Berlin

Strong feelings about Berlin! I wonder if my feelings will be that strong…

16. Peter Bjorn And John – School Of Kraut

Its like German surf music! But I don’t think I will be surfing in Berlin…

17. Beirut – Postcards From Italy

I’m not going to Italy but I appreciate the mention of postcards.

18. Bayside – Phone Call From Poland

They should have called this song “A Postcard from Poland” but maybe that never happened to them. I could fix that!

19. Maximo Park – Postcard Of A Painting

I prefer postcards with pictures of rivers or trees or buildings. Just my personal preference.

20. Europe – The Final Countdown

GAH! The countdown is real and I only have hours to pack! Gotta go!

[VIDEO] Music Video Roundup – 06.14.2013

Music-Video-RoundupMore long overdue videos that I scoped weeks ago and technical difficulties kept me from posting.

“Whatever Brandon! Shut up and play the hits! We heard there is another 1975 video where not much happens besides the band looking cool as cucumbers but its still riveting!”

Yes. That is true. Also, Wallpaper doesn’t suck for the first time in a while. Props. And Is Tropical get weird and wonderful in their new video with epic “The Greeks” director Megaforce. Read more

Remix Roundup Vol. 67 – 6.26.2012 [Matt & Kim, Feist, St. Lucia, J.Cole, and more…]

And just like that.  I’m back with more remix madness for your Burning Ears. Remix Roundups are a collection of the freshest remixes on the planet.  You can search high and low in this world or another, but you won’t find a remix series this dope in this galaxy or the next –  For we are from only space.

Passion Pit – Take A Walk (The M Machine Remix)  / First we had the glorious Pecking Duk remix and now this and its not even Christmas.  The M Machine, hailing from the Bay Area have created a straight up slappin mix here.

La Roux – I’m Not Your Toy (Data Remix)  / Not a new tune by any means, but what a chune it is… How this song somehow slipped through the Lights & Music cracks blows my mind.  Without further ado, enjoy.

The 25 Best MUSIC VIDEOS of 2011

Every once in a while I meet someone who casually mentions that music videos are dead and I’m always shocked. Music videos have never been more alive and vibrant than they are now in the age of video democracy online. This post is a celebration of the creative spirit that fights every day to set great songs to even better visuals. You guys are my heroes.

Watch the videos in a countdown stye playlist below or continue on to catch them embedded 1-by-1 with my woefully minimal commentary.

[LP] Is Tropical – NATIVE TO (w/ “Lies”)

don’t beat yourself up for being too blind

♫ Is Tropical – Lies

I would not be mad at any DJ who played “Lies” every 30 minutes the next time I’m out (Barcelona DJs, take note!) Just enough intro to allow for leisurely drink-finishing before setting the glass down and losing my limbs.

London’s Is Tropical have followed up  a pair of amazing tracks, with an even more epic video (below), and now an album that I can’t stop listening to. If you like what you have heard so far then you will love Native To. Fuzzed out indie beach electro that doesn’t hide it’s desire to get stuck in your body. Songs like “Land of the Nod” and “I’ll Take My Chances” feel like they could be chants on an indie pirate ship while others like “The Greeks” and “What???” are perfect for a battle montage or other such cinematic event. The album could be trimmed of a few weaker tracks but all 12 do seem to bring different things to the table so I can’t argue with that. I can, however, look forward to more from this masked trio. Joel’s Summer/Birthday Mix 2011 [Calvin Harris, LMFAO, Empire of The Sun, Lady Gaga, and more…]

Ahhh the wonders of summer.  A time for great tunes, butterflies, unicorns, puppies, summer flings, confetti birthday cakes, cookies and all your favorite things.

Maybe most importantly, its for Getting Nurdy and Party Rock Shuffling your faces off.

This special time of year begs for a soundtrack.  So, I thought, what better day to post something as monumental and life altering as my summer mix, then on the most important day of the year.  MY BIRTHDAY!

If you thought I died then that’s silly. I been here, just busy as all get out between work and then holidays and then the Open’er Festival. ♫ J. Cole – Work Out / Another smooth jam from J. Cole. I like this guy’s flavor.

♫ Portugal, The Man – Got It All (This Can’t Be Living Now) / New Portugal! Not my favorite of their tracks but their stuff is generally on a different level anyway.

♫ Hercules & Love Affair – Painted Eyes (Radio Edit) / I’ve heard a few of the new Hercules tracks and while they are no “Blind” this one definitely has Read more

TBE’s Summer In Hi-Fi /// A Summer Mix, Vol 1

Ahhh, summer… If mine wasn’t currently operating as the antithesis of all this relaxing and peaceful I would definitely have had this mix up sooner, but alas, it wasn’t to be. However, seeing as tomorrow I head out on an 18 day family vacation (never too old!) it’s time to get these summer jams pumping! Today is Volume 1 and the next two Fridays will bring Volumes 2 & 3 respectively. I’ve never understood the concept of an all-encompassing summer mix because like all things amazing, summer has many facets and is home to many moods. So I’ve gone and put together 3 full mixes of summer-themed goodness, each with it’s own sun-soaked vibe. Seeing as how this year’s summer was perhaps the most highly anticipated (and deserved) clump of warm days in Polish history I decided to kick off this summer mix series with a big rousing 54-minute high-five to the summer sun. Summer In Hi-Fi is a mix that celebrates summer with all the energy and eagerness of that first day at the beach or pool. Take a gander at the track list after the jump and download the whole mix right below!

The 25 Best Songs of 2010… So Far (Jan-June)

As I’ve been compiling this best songs list I’ve been thinking a lot about what it means to be a great track. Last year I went by play counts to determine what songs I “loved” the most but this year I noticed that the list that came out didn’t really match my perception of my favorites. A lot of my top played songs this year are indeed great songs, but they also happen to be on a great album so they get played by themselves as well as in the course of the album. So I got to thinking about which are the tracks that I seek out, that I crave, that I have to hear every night before bed or every morning to wake up. Those are the songs that make up this list. Songs that for whatever reason hooked me to the point where I need(ed) them in my life this year. Those great albums (and their highlight jams) will get their moment but for now we celebrate the song, or as Read more

Is Tropical

IS TROPICAL don’t make me SEASICK so much as make me want to form a MUTINY against crappy music

heave ho!

Is Tropical – Seasick Mutiny

If you never though you were down with instrumental music then I double dog dare you not to bust a groove during “Seasick Mutiny.” I like to imagine myself a swarthy mix between The Sea Captain from The Simpsons and Jack Sparrow as I navigate the mighty seas off of Party Island, cocktail in my hook as I flail my one fist in the air enthusiastically. The music video is a good place to start for what my dreams will look like as I await that hangover. Anyway, Is Tropical are a London three-piece who take a unique approach to having a front-man, namely trying to eliminate the role altogether. They all swap instrumental and vocal duties as they create, as one magazine put it, “beautifully coherent chaos.” The Heave Ho/Seasick Mutiny single is out now at eMusic (below) or iTunes or wherever. These guys need to tour with Civil Civic on what I would call The Freshest London Bands TBE Has Recently Fallen In Love With Tour. Oh, and if you want to hear the Is Tropical guys wail more than pirate phrases then “The Greeks” is your jam. It certainly is my jam.
