Oh to be young and live only for the sun and the sand and not let any of the moments in between slow your roll or get in the way of the hunt for a good time. So what if you lose a sandal out of the sunroof? So what if you take a laughing head in the gut as the overstuffed car bounces along the seaside cobblestones? So what if the bars are all 21+ and you can’t get in and instead have to start your own dance party on the beach under the moonlight?
Australia is far away from me and I know that it has magical things that remain unfairly isolated because of the distance. A lot of things get their due love over here, but a lot don’t. If I had a magic boat I would sail there and collect its treasures to bring back and show people here in the States. The guys of I Know Leonard would definitely have a place on my boat and we would spend the time sailing back here singing songs and drinking beers and even if nobody else loved their jams once we got back it would have been well worth it for the adventure I got to have with them on that magic boat.
Even though I haven’t seen them live since long before I started The Burning Ear 6 years ago, I am pretty sure Brand New is still the band that I’ve bought tickets to see more than any other band in my life. And I get to see them again in 2 weeks. It will either be wildly euphoric or deeply disappointing. Or, more likely, an roller coaster that flirts with both emotional poles. Either way, this doped up remix of the later catalog Brand New classic “Jesus Christ” is treating me right as I gear up for the big reunion show (me reuniting with my buddy Ted and our old “homies” Brand New, not the band actually reuniting. Although that is kind of happening too since its been so damn long).

Is it weird to think that a song about a girl can also be a song about the band singing the song about the girl? Don’t think too hard on that one, it was just my very real experience watching AVAN LAVA tear the roof off our showcase at SXSW. OOO EEE is about all I could think as they rocked matching white outfits, confetti cannons, and a room full of dancing fans. And then the horns!!

During the weeklong music conference marathon, the lyric “Don’t stop it baby, work that body, keep it goin!” became an anthem of sorts. Now that I’m back home, it can take on other meanings… Happy Friday ;)
