[QUICKIE/COVER] Oberhofer – TIME CAPSULES II (w/ “I Could Go”) + “Runaway” (Kanye West cover)

and I don’t have a clue what that look on your face is all about

It’s redundant ’cause you know I love Oberhofer but this album is sunshine and fast cars. Big, fun, and catchy as hell. Listen all summer.

♫ Oberhofer – Runaway (Kanye West cover)

Plus this Kanye cover is just further evidence of the talent at work here.

[LIVE/EP] Midi Matilda – RED LIGHT DISTRICT EP (w/ “Red Light District”)

i could be your lover, hold me till the next one at least

♫ Midi Matilda – Red Light District

You should remember San Francisco’s Midi Matilda from their stellar “Day Dreams” in January. If you don’t, then now is your chance to remember them from their also-stellar “Red Light District” and the impeccable EP named after it. The band’s style of shuffling grooves slip and bounce in perfect harmony with Kilborn’s tender vocals. It’s all endlessly catchy without suffering from largesse or overproduction. It’s kinda perfect really. A lot like Read more

[QUICKIE] Santigold – MASTER OF MY MAKE-BELIEVE

now it’s all you to man up you see no way to hang on what you say

Some tracks don’t deliver but the ones that do bang hard. Gems are “Go” “Keepers” & obvs “Disparate Youth.” I’m glad she’s back for summer.

[EP] Foxes – WARRIOR (w/ “Warrior” & “Let Go For Tonight”)

and you won’t know anything about it until you have to live without it

♫ Foxes – Let Go For Tonight (Demo)

More Foxes! This girl can basically do no wrong. Her debut EP Warrior is out now and while it is conspicuously missing the epic “Youth” it features the rousing “White Coats” as well as the sparser “Let Go For Tonight” and the piano-led “Warrior.” “In Her Arms” is the one track I haven’t heard yet but I can still name Warrior one of the years top EPs. More please!

[EP/LIVE] Harlan – NATIVE SON (w/ “The Come Down”) + @ The Echo, May 21

the choices that surround you are only yours to make

♫ Harlan – The Come Down

  • Who: Harlan Silverman & friends
  • What: Funky soul pop, like Mayer Hawthorne, Seye, Prince
  • Where: Los Angeles + Facebook
  • When: Native Son EP is out now (Stream it below).
  • Why: Big, bold, and undeniably dripping with sultry grooves is the name of Harlan’s game. Jams like “The Come Down” are instant ear pleasers, getting you to sing along before the first listen is through. Other tracks go slower, establishing a mood or feeling with Harlan’s super-tight musicianship (he plays all instruments). Native Son concludes with “Dancing On The Bed,” a perfectly named funkmobile that celebrates all the best things about Harlan. All the things he celebrates in his live show.

While Harlan’s debut EP Native Son is varied, textured, and showcases a broad new talent. Harlan’s live show, however, only has one setting: dance party. His touring band The Powers may be a motley crew of style but they all take care of business like pros. The real talent is Harlan himself. Watching him shred on the guitar is a total treat. He is clearly a man with both immense love and skill for his instruments. Anyone who can get an LA crowd dancing on a Monday is surely some Read more

[LP] Acollective – ONWARDS (w/ “Girls” & “Stolen Goods”)

why don’t you try to sleep alone

♫ Acollective – Girls

I just realized that after my post-Israel obsess-fest over “Stolen Goods” (below) I never gave a proper album review of Acollective’s Onwards LP. Well, this won’t be it. Consider it more of a friendly reminder to pour yourself a stiff drink and dive into the rollicking gypsy folk rock of these live-show beasts.

[MIXTAPE] The Hood Internet – THE MIXTAPE VOLUME SIX

don’t play the game that i can’t win

  • Who: ABX and STV SLV
  • What: Indie/rap mashups, like Bearbot, Invisiboy, It’s Overture
  • Where: Chicago, IL + Facebook
  • When: Sweet mashups served weekly.
  • Why: The Hood Internet are the gold standard in indie/rap mashups but the Burning Ear hasn’t featured a new jam of theirs since Christmas 2010. I was beginning to think they done fell off.

♫ The Hood Internet – Beastie Boys x Santigold x Weird Tapes – Don’t Play No Trash

Then they dropped Volume Six of their mixtape series and all worry was washed away by the most seamless collection of genius mashup choices this year. Just scroll through the tracklist here to see what I mean. From the unexpected (Wiz + Phantogram, Mayer Hawthorne + M83, Tyga + Neon Indian) to the predictably balanced (Whitney + Chromeo, Ma$e + Notorious B.I.G. + Penguin Prison) The Hood Internet live up to that album art of deftly concocting dance party magic.

♫ The Hood Internet – Tyga x Neon Indian – Polish City

I highly recommend you do not start a party this year without this mix on hand. Stream the whole thing below and download it free here.

♫ The Hood Internet – Whitney Houston x Chromeo – When The Night Knows

[QUICKIE] Tanlines – MIXED EMOTIONS (w/ “All of Me”)

pardon me for asking, pardon me for thinking, all of me is asking, all of me is thinking

♫ Tanlines – All of Me

Tanlines once had promise. They have now delivered big time with a solid, textured album & even better 2-piece (!) live show. Hello summer.
