Karl Kling: The VINYL MOON Interview

The Burning Ear and Karl Kling go waaaaaay back. As an integral member of RAC, Karl has been on our radar both through his remixes and contributions to the live show. Watching him branch out into solo stuff was exciting to say the least. Perhaps the only thing more exciting was being able to feature one of those tracks,  “I Will Wait”, on VINYL MOON. Karl has been playing on the RAC/Big Data tour and I recently caught up with him before a huge LA show.

RKCB: The VINYL MOON Interview

For a band whose music is tailor made for nighttime activities it made sense that there wasn’t much revealed about them in the early days. No photos, no website, and no live show until pretty recently. For some bands that feels like a gimmick, but now that those things have emerged it is clear that Riley and Casey are simply all about the music. They weren’t going to put energy into anything that detracted from the songs. And it shows. Its been an honor to hear them evolve and reveal over this past year and I’m proud to present this Interview I recently had with them to celebrate the inclusion of “Baptize” on VINYL MOON Volume 1.

Pr0files: The VINYL MOON Interview

When you have been running a blog as long I’ve been doing The Burning Ear you see a lot of bands come and go. Grab your ear and then give it right back as they drift along the various paths life sets up. If you are lucky, you get to catch these bands as they reform into new projects down the line. Tacking on the extra years of life experience and refined vision to create something even greater than before. And so it was with great joy when I first heard about a project that featured Danny from one of TBE’s favorite bands, Baby Monster. The new project was in major infancy but there was something very magical there. Well, you already know what I mean if you have heard Pr0files’ debut jam “Call Yourself A Lover”. And here we are. Years later and with a handful of fog-filled dance parties under my belt I’m proud to present a Pr0files jam on the first edition of Vinyl Moon. It was a long time certainty on my end. I’m just glad they said yes.

Lostboycrow: The VINYL MOON Interview

Lostboycrow only had 2 tracks released when I first heard of him. But just a few listens to “HiyHiy” and I knew I wanted to feature it on Vinyl Moon. That was in January. What a treat its been to watch Lostboycrow evolve from then to the impending powerhouse he is today. Half a dozen songs later and each one reveals a new layer to this deeply layered artist. And then there is the live show…. just go. But first stick around for our Twitterview with the man himself below.

Rose Quartz: The VINYL MOON Interview

The first time I ever even heard of Rose Quartz was when I saw them open for Generationals in the middle of the SoCal desert. I was so stoked by what I saw and heard that I invited them to be on Vinyl Moon on the spot. They are a powerhouse of songwriting, live charisma, and good vibes. I am honored to be releasing a very special instrumental version of their mega jam “Leaving Now” on VINYL MOON Volume 1. To celebrate I got to catch the band for a bit as they head out on tour.

Robyn Sherwell: The VINYL MOON Interview

My favorite Robyn Sherwell track is also the title track to her debut EP Islander. As Vinyl Moon members know, “Islander” is a fierce foot stomper of an anthem that takes stands up and demands attention. However, dive into the rest of Robyn’s catalog and you will uncover a much tenderer side. Songs like “Love Somebody” and “Tightropes” are gentle and soulful, drifting closer to indie-folk than rock anthem. But thats just what I love about Robyn. She has a lot to express and isn’t afraid to let it out in different ways. So whatever your gateway Robyn Sherwell song is, make sure you stick around for the full ride. Its a beautiful one.

Catch Robyn on tour and pick up her debut EP Islander which is out now. And read on for our Twitterview with her.

[SXSW INTERVIEW] Strange Talk & The Griswolds tried to annex my RV for Australia

Please forgive the guys in Strange Talk and The Griswolds for being awesome. Its probably not their fault. Gotta be something to with the ozone or something down under. Luckily for us I got to cram all 9 members of both bands into the RV at SXSW for a bit of political debate and a few gardening tips.

Strange Talk’s awesome album Cast Away is out on April 29th.
