Fountains Of Wayne – Radiation Vibe / 1996

Fountains of Wayne are most famous for their 2003 comeback song “Stacy’s Mom” but it was 1996’s “Radiation Vibe” that first broke them onto the scene and into my heart. But its not all MILFs and underwear-on-the-outside with these guys, they recorded the tite song for That Thing You Do (earning an Oscer nomination) as well as the theme song to MTV prank-call show Crank Yankers. Fountains are still active, their 2007 album even receiving critical acclaim, but despite all that other jazz, to me they will always be the band that made this gem.

Unwritten Law – Cailin / 1998

“Cailin” has always been one of my favorite love songs. No matter that is coincided with my first personal love or that the song was written for the singer’s daughter, its simple sentiments are beautiful and universal. Guilt, hate, fear, loneliness, confidence; these emotions find their way into every true human relationship. Loving is never easy but having great music and honest lyrics makes it all more palatable. And when you are sick of the sentiment, the 11 other tracks on this album are perfect for rocking out.

mothersday

This Sunday is Mother’s Day in many parts of the world. If you are in those parts, or you just love your mother, then this is the mix for you (and your mother!). Just download it, burn it, and give it to your mother. Don’t listen to it or even read the track names. That way it will be more fun for everyone!

born to be down, i’ve learned all my lessons before now

Local H – Bound for the Floor / 1996

What a great track. The simple lyrics and crunching guitars just never get old, and I’ll always remember where I learned the word “copacetic.” Local H has released 4 more studio albums since 1996’s As Good As Dead, a solid album with other standouts like “Hi-Fiving MF,” “Eddie Vedder,” and the propulsive head-banger “Back in the Day.” Unlike a lot of other 90s flash-in-the-pan bands they are surprisingly relevant, even being named 2008’s Chicago Tribune Band Of The Year. I haven’t heard much of their stuff since then but the track up on their MySpace are good, especially the anti California-song “California Songs.”

Just Burn It! The Upbeat Beatdown mix

Download the Upbeat Beatdown mix.

I know it’s been a while since the last Just Burn It! mix but you may have noticed all the changes to the site instead. Well as site tweaking settles down I’ll be making more mixes for y’all. Lets start with this one!

As spring arrives there are often days that turn out to be less warm than we would have hoped. I often find these days to be the most depressing. At least in winter you know what to expect but during these transitional times it can be tough. Hope is often higher than the mercury. On these depressing days it helps to have a soundtrack to pick you back up, and what’s better than a solid hour of upbeat music! There are dance-offs, face-offs, walk-offs and now an upbeat-off! Wait, that doesn’t sound right. Anyway, here are 19 tracks that are guaranteed to get you amped! From hand-claps to fist-pumps, it’s 60 minutes of pure upbeat psyched motivation! Make it your soundtrack to spring cleaning! Your place has kinda been looking like a dump…

Track list after the dump. I mean jump.

The Refreshments – Banditos / 1996

Tempe, Arizona, based The Refreshments broke out big time with this Captain Picard referencing 1996 hit. I guess they had a follow up album in 1997 but that’s news to me. Also news is that this song was featured in Guitar Hero 2, so there’s that. Guitar Hero appreciation or not, this song is just awesome. Catchy as hell and perfect for driving to. Would go well on a 90s edition of the High Speed Chase mix.

Remix Roundup! ∞ Vol. 1

Yo, for real, it’s the weekend and its time to shake your moneymaker (not implying y’all are strippers or whatever). I stumble across a ton of awesome remixes as I surf this information ether-highway of ours. I don’t like giving them dedicated posts cause 1) not everyone is super into remixes and 2) I don’t want to dilute the attention that should be given to new artists. You feel me? I knew you would. So anyway, I am starting another new feature at TBE where I round up some of the sweetest remixes of late and toss ’em at you without any of the usual garnish you find in a normal post. Who knows how often I’ll do it but they wont all be this big, I just had a lot of goodies to share. Anyway, listen, love, download, dance! Just do it after the jump.
