PREMIERE – Shoffy – “Fake Friends (feat. Sidizen King)”

We’re launched right into “Fake Friends” with an opening salvo from Sidizen King, whose blistering verse keeps up with the breakneck drum fill that accents the rest of the track. But when Shoffy grabs the mic, he’s no slouch – spitting lines like “I’ve got no more friends from L.A. / They just hang around to get paid”. What really works with “Fake Friends” is we can hear the hurt that these toxic relations have caused. There’s a tenderness, found in both the childlike chimes of the beat and also lyrics like “Rollin’ with my old crew, leave if I don’t know you”. Unfortunately for Shoffy, if he keeps releasing great songs like this, it might only encourage the fakes to keep coming out of the woodwork. But at least he’ll have a go-to anthem to shut them down.

[PREMIERE] Rival Cavves – “Sauced”

We’re big fans of Magic Bronson, so when we were sent the latest track by Rival Cavves – consisting of Magic Bronson’s Matthew Lieberman and Marissa Longstreet of SLUGS – we were intrigued. After a few listens, we were hooked. It’s hard to use The xx blueprint of male/female vocals atop guitar-laden electronic beats while managing to sound nothing like the indie behemoths. But Rival Cavves imbue their brand of indie-dance with plenty of Southern California sun, carving out their own unique corner of the spectrum. “Sauced” blurs the line between the intoxicating obsessions and miseries of a troubled romance as Longstreet’s distinctive vocals give edge to Lieberman’s dynamic production.

Get lost in “Sauced”.

[PREMIERE] Van Bobbi – “Cruel Intentions”

From the first obscured keyboard chords to the distorted vocal sample sprinkled throughout the track, “Cruel Intentions” has more happening than first meets the eye. Van Bobbi, previously known as Collage, sings about a manipulative, controlling lover that he can’t get enough of. Along the way, underwater synths and electronic drum fills that would make Phil Collins blush drive the whole thing forward to an inevitable conclusion we never discover in the song, but that we all know is coming. But then again, the chorus says “We’ve got cruel intentions” – maybe Van Bobbi has a few surprises up his sleeve. We’ll know more when his debut album is released via Lights & Music Collective later this year.

Vinyl Moon members can hear Van Bobbi on”Perfect Lover” from Volume 011: Night Eyes –  currently ONLY available on vinyl!

[PREMIERE] Noble Oak – “Out There” & album announce

Whether you take it in as a sunshine-drenched pop gem, a break-up anthem, or 80’s nostalgia to tide you over until the new season of Stranger Things, a new Noble Oak track is cause for celebration. That’s why we’re thrilled to premiere the producer’s latest track “Out There” and announce his upcoming sophomore album, Collapsing Together. Unabashedly tender and ballad-esque, “Out There” underpins its shimmering piano melodies with massive drums and the sexiest soprano sax this side of “Baker Street“. It risks becoming too melodramatic to take seriously, but the despondent lyrics give it a believable emotional core: “I’m not ready for love/I’m not ready for anything”. Hopefully we’ll be ready for the rest of the album, to be released August 2017.

Find the tracklist for Collapsing Together below, and revisit Noble Oak’s excellent track “All I Said” as featured on VINYL MOON Volume 014: From The Window.

[PREMIERE] Slow Shiver – “Set In Stone” (Video)

"Set in Stone" – Slow Shiver from Slow Shiver on Vimeo.

Just a month after the track premiered on Soundcloud, Slow Shiver unveils the music video for “Set In Stone,” and it’s a gorgeous and introspective piece. Like the song, the video is equal parts dream-like, raw, and heartfelt. Contrasting the personal experience of receiving an unwanted letter with dramatic lighting, sharp accents (literally), and a no-holds-barred lip-synch performance, we see the conflicted emotions of trying to draw boundaries between someone who has hurt you – resilience and vulnerability, independence and desire, confidence and doubt. If you ever needed a backdrop to an inner struggle, this is it.

For more Slow Shiver, go back to “In Blue (Drive By Delivery)” from VINYL MOON Volume 018: Intrepid Curves, or hear his guest feature on Anoraak’s track “We Lost” from VINYL MOON Volume 016: Breathing Shadows.

[PREMIERE] Rywolf – “Like You” Video

When I posted about Rywolf’s killer debut dance jam “Like You” back in August I paired it with a great photograph from Signe Pierce. That got a ball rolling that connected Signe and Rywolf and ended up in the photographer art-directing the video for Like You. Needless to say I’ve been pretty stoked since I heard the news. And now, seeing the final product, even more so. A home run on all fronts, the “Like You” video touches the heart (and legs) of anyone who just wanted to leave it all on the dance floor. Dive in a bust a move of your own in the final scenes.

[PREMIERE] Dresses – “Please Don’t Go” (Cheat Codes edit)

The wonderful Dresses have made a simple plea here. The sweetheart voice set to a caffeinated sidewalk-skipping beat from Cheat Codes makes this seem like something you’ve been asked before. And probably ignored. But don’t. She’s asked you nicely. At this point it would be rude to go. Seriously, she means business…  Read more

[PREMIERE] Inspired & The Sleep – EYELID KID EP

San Diego’s wonderfully weird Inspired & The Sleep just released their 6-track Eyelid Kid EP. If you have been following songs like “Sleeps Well On Knives” and “In my Labyrinth Mind” then you know we are stoked to premiere this collection on The Burning Ear. Eyelid Kid weaves some lovely and interesting soundscapes for your escapist pleasure. Flowing somewhere between a  sci-fi movie and a high-school drug trip, you’ll have plenty of mental company as you drift off with them. “Peripherals” may be my favorite of the new jams but its hard to pick when each one has so much going on. Dive in and explore for yourself.
