V.V. Brown has been riding the hype train sine late last year but I never fell for any of her songs until this one, and even then it took a couple listens. Hopefully you wont be as slow as me and will catch on to the anthemic awesomeness of this track right away. It’s the kind of song that makes me want to sing along at top volume. I just wish it was more pertinent to fist pumping than a song about a verbal misunderstanding and barking sharks(?). I also wish the rest of her debut LP, Travelling Like The Light, was as good. I’ve given it a couple of listens now and while it is completely pleasent I don’t see it staying in my listening rotation past, well… past me hitting ‘pubish’ on this post. Good thing “Shark In The Water” will enjoy a much more fruitful life in my “2009/07July” playlist.

A funny thing happened on the way to this post… I’m rereading my Head’s Up ’09 post looking for my first hype-filled words on Kid Cudi and, well, he isn’t there. I never actually hyped Kid Cudi for 2009, despite later statements that I had. One week ago this discovery may have left me scratching my head, however after seeing his performance at The House Of Blues on Sunday night I am left nodding my head. “Good call” I mumble to myself, “Dude is on some seriously whack shit.” If hearing disparaging words like that directed at “yer boy” Cudi makes you mad/annoyed/cry then walk away now, it only gets worse.
Now let’s keep one thing in mind, I am not a negative dude. Readers of TBE will know my vibe is enthusiastic and positive and although I have not loved everything I have heard from Cudi some of his tracks are great and I was really looking forward to his live show selling me on his flavor. That was my mindset going in. In an effort to keep this as simple as possible I am going to just give you the play by play of what happened next. Start after the jump…

This is a post where I recap a lot of exciting things so prepare yourself accordingly.
The Rural Alberta Advantage is Nils, Paul, and Amy. They self-released a record called Hometowns which was one of my favorites of 2008. Having just signed to Saddle Creek they will be re-releasing that record on July 7th. This is exciting for many reasons, not the least of which is that it makes Hometowns can be on my favorite albums of 2009 list (which it most certainly will).
Before the show the band was gracious enough to sit down with me for a bit and talk about their album, touring, music videos, Subway sandwiches, self-googling, the origin of their name, eMusic, NYC audiences, and a bunch of other fun stuff. They were funny, gracious, open, and generally fantastic. I apologize for my over-use of “like” – I was a bit nervous – but otherwise it is an interesting interview. I learned a lot about the band. Before I get into that I want to talk about their live show. It’s amazing. Go see them. Seriously, I am not gonna freak out on you again like I did with Lykke Li but that’s only because The RAA’s awesomeness was not such a surprise. Look at photos of their live shows here or watch videos here but actually don’t bother because you should just go see them. Oh, but buy Hometowns first! Deal? Good.

I know Lykke Li’s music. I like some of it. I knew she was playing in NYC last night. I didn’t stress too much about it. That is until a twist of events put me in a booth at the Highline Ballroom 5 minutes before she went on. Then everything changed. She came onstage with 3 dapper dudes backing her on various instruments. She ripped right into “Dance Dance Dance” and brought energy that rivals any of the remixes.
Lykke jumped and writhed around the stage with a presence and swagger that blew me away. At only 23 she performs like she has been doing this for years. She owns the stage and had everyone’s eyes locked on her as if blinking would somehow stop the how. I was a little bit in love.
Throughout her set Lykke was armed with a drumstick (see photo above) that she would beat on anything from the mic stand to a tambourine to an actual drum. Fantastic. And then there was the Kings Of Leon cover. Ho. Ly. Smokes. If you thought you loved it in your earphones you should try it all up in your eye balls.
Lykke basically ripped through Youth Novels as if it was 2008’s top electro/disco record. Drums were heavy and sharp, synths were funked out, and Lykke just worked it. Hard. “Complaint Department” became a full on rave track.
All I can say about the experience is that it was epic. If Lykke comes to your town don’t miss out. I’m fully converted to the Cult of Li and if you aren’t already sold on her power then get there. Did I mention she covered “A Milli”? Yeah. Fa-resh.
I tidied my jaw up off the floor and humbly shuffled home to dwell in the memory of it all. Anyway, that’s it for my ramblings and the remixes but here are a few more B-sides and a live Vampire Weekend cover to complete my little Lykke fest.
