[MP3] JOYWAVE are GOLDEN, whatever STATE they come from they can still HANG WITH ME and ROBYN

i watched myself rise up from beneath the sand and i knew i was here to stay

♫ Joywave – Golden State

Joywave hail from Rochester, NY, but have made their mark on my ears with this epic jam about love and loss in my home state on the left coast. “Golden State” pulls no punches, hard charging like souped up convertible on it’s way to Hooksville via a detour in Singalongstown. It’s a big, unabashed break-up rock song full of soul, guitars, and drums. And I can’t stop listening to it.

♫ Joywave – Hang With Me (Robyn Cover)

In a showcase of their eclectic style, Joywave have blessed us with a mellowed-out cover of the track made famous by Robyn’s own 2010 cover. Among their minimal instrumentation, Robyn’s version gets time-stretched to 800% and features as an ‘instrument.’ It’s an interesting yet successful take on the song, and even comes paired with a more interesting video treatment.

[EP] ACE REPORTER’s jam FRANKFURT is one of like TWENTY NINE thousand tracks he’s dishing out

i say stop, you say go, i say why, you say so

♫ Ace Reporter – Frankfurt

Ace Reporter is TBE alum Chris Snyder who recorded a song every day of 2010  (!!) and released them all for free. Much to my peasant surprise, many of them were really good. To culminate his project he has whittled his mammoth collection down and re-recorded and mastered his favorites into a series of (also free) EPs that he is slowly releasing throughout this year. The first, named after one of my favorites from the 365 Project, was the Untouched and Arrived EP. EP closer “Frankfurt” steals the show with it’s driving rhythm and ripping guitars.

♫ Ace Reporter – Twenty-Nine

Second EP, Lean Honey Lean, contains the tender and plinking “Twenty Nice” which instantly  hooks my ears and get’s me grooving along.

♫ Ace Reporter – [Day-338] ONE (Yeasayer cover)

Another bit of Ace Reporter goodness is his list of favorite albums of 2010, rendered in the form of five cover songs instead of the usual jpeg and blurb that us bloggers squeeze out. Catch his renditions of tracks by 2010 faves The National, Arcade Fire, Beach House, and Local Natives.

Brandon’s TBE Digest 18 – 1.18.2011 [Passion Pit, Kanye West, Big K.R.I.T., RAC, Das Racist, BRAHMS, Kid Cudi, and more!]

It’s a new year and a lot of good stuff piled up over the holidays. Considering it’s the 18th Digest, today is the 18th (close enough…), and I have 18 tracks, I think this is some kind of perfect Digest or something. Dig in. But really, dig. There are some real gems in the mix down there.

♫ Passion Pit – All These Trees / Passion Pit drop a new one through American Express ZYNC. I keep waiting for the song to start but it ends up being all build, no climax. Still nice to hear our boys back in the mix.

The Best Cover Songs of 2010

This year saw quite a few bands taking cracks at covers of songs both new and old. From bare bones beautiful interpretations of The Smashing Pumpkins, Miike Snow, and LCD Soundsystem to full on genre flipping of Jay-Z and Justice, to a different blend of herbs and spices on Band of Horses and Beyoncé, it’s clear that there is no magic formula to a great cover. These are the one’s I loved the most this past year. You?

10. ♫ ceo – Halo (Beyoncé Cover)

9. ♫ Jackson Harris – Empire State Of Mind (Jay-Z cover)

[MP3] THE MILK are 54 plus 46 which WAS MY NUMBER in rating their upcoming jams

she’s a back door slammin’ leaver but it’s alright

♫ The Milk – 54 46 Was My Number (Toots & The Maytals cover)

Essex-based The Milk are about to have a big 2011. The former punks have hung up their scowls in favor of the buttery smooth grooves and crisp horns of classic Motown and funk. Naming themselves after their desire to bring back “white boy funk” they join a number of excellent artists with a similar mission (Mayer Hawthorne, Eli “Paperboy” Reid, etc). Although, with jams like these they may just leave them all in the dust. “54 46 Was My Number” is their take on the Toots & The Maytals classic and is the only track one available to download. It’s a beautiful blend of ska and soul with a dash of that wobble for you dub-heads. The real magic, however, still waits in the wings. Take a gander at the demo for “Kimmi Kimmi” which was recorded in the band’s shed.

The Milk – Kimmi Kimmi (demo)

Ummm, yeah, that’s what I’m talking about. Smooth, sassy, and sexy. Perfect for making or breaking love. Catch 2 more sweet jams at their soundcloud page. If those 4 songs were an official EP it would be topping my year’s best of list for sure.

With only a small handful of blog coverage they have still garnered some major label interest and are continuing the recording process. It’s all uphill from here as think we are going to be hearing a lot more fantastic stuff in the coming year.
