The Pragmatic challenge you to a Deathmatch

The Pragmatic – Deathmatch

The Pragmatic first hit the scene last October with “Circles,” a song that was instantly put on my playlist for that month. This past week saw the release of a full EP (Released for FREE). Five songs that range from the contemplative “Circles” to the frenetic “Deathmatch,” but all thickly coated in crunchy analog synths courtesy of  band member André Allen Anjos (Mr. RAC himself). Don’t let his star status fool you, however. The pragmatic are clearly a collaborative effort and have a very different sound than many of RAC’s remixes. Speaking of, here is RAC member Anndrew Maury’s remix of The Pragmatic’s “Circles.”

Just Burn It! The Upbeat Beatdown mix

Download the Upbeat Beatdown mix.

I know it’s been a while since the last Just Burn It! mix but you may have noticed all the changes to the site instead. Well as site tweaking settles down I’ll be making more mixes for y’all. Lets start with this one!

As spring arrives there are often days that turn out to be less warm than we would have hoped. I often find these days to be the most depressing. At least in winter you know what to expect but during these transitional times it can be tough. Hope is often higher than the mercury. On these depressing days it helps to have a soundtrack to pick you back up, and what’s better than a solid hour of upbeat music! There are dance-offs, face-offs, walk-offs and now an upbeat-off! Wait, that doesn’t sound right. Anyway, here are 19 tracks that are guaranteed to get you amped! From hand-claps to fist-pumps, it’s 60 minutes of pure upbeat psyched motivation! Make it your soundtrack to spring cleaning! Your place has kinda been looking like a dump…

Track list after the dump. I mean jump.

Remix Roundup! ∞ Vol. 1

Yo, for real, it’s the weekend and its time to shake your moneymaker (not implying y’all are strippers or whatever). I stumble across a ton of awesome remixes as I surf this information ether-highway of ours. I don’t like giving them dedicated posts cause 1) not everyone is super into remixes and 2) I don’t want to dilute the attention that should be given to new artists. You feel me? I knew you would. So anyway, I am starting another new feature at TBE where I round up some of the sweetest remixes of late and toss ’em at you without any of the usual garnish you find in a normal post. Who knows how often I’ll do it but they wont all be this big, I just had a lot of goodies to share. Anyway, listen, love, download, dance! Just do it after the jump.

With Jenny Owen Youngs I could definitely be Led To The Sea

joy-transmitter-failure

whatever you say but walking away is still running

Jenny Owens Young – Led To The Sea

OK, so I totally just got chills. As if listening to Jenny Owen Youngs’ music wasn’t beautiful enough, she herself is stunning, she says “fuck,” lists Motion City Soundtrack as an influence, her tunes are on eMusic, and then to read that she is touring with TBE faves Jukebox The Ghost? Damn man, too fucking hot. I kinda can’t handle it. Ok, be strong man, talk about the song. Ok, the song, the song. I can do it….. SO, “Led To The Sea” is foot stomper of a track that showcases Jenny’s tal…. ok, I can’t do it. Sorry, I just watched this and I’m speechless. Best ever. And the goosebumps again.

Anni Rossi and the infectious Machine

anni-rossi

can’t buy these impulses from a machine

Anni Rossi – Machine

I caught this track off of Music For Ants a few weeks ago and its been growing on me more and more. Anni Rossi is some kind of viola virtuoso and crafts light yet slightly haunting little ditties that remind me of the awesome Regina Spektor. “Machine” is the perfect soundtrack to the kind of lazy Saturday I’m having over here. I’ll also throw in her cover of Radiohead’s “Creep.” Not sure what to think of it but it’s interesting nonetheless. I like the way she sings “weirdo.” Her debut LP Rockwell is out now.

Chiddy Bang’s quality is like Day n’ Nite

Chiddy Bang – Day and Night

Ok, so I am having a dilemma here. I came home tonight to find this new Chiddy Bang track in my inbox and you know I got love for these guys but after their last track I am wary. I want nothing more than to sing these guys’ praises and site their MGMT sample as a lapse in judgement but I feel like this is an even further step backwards. Besides the fact that the tune is kind of a snoozer, it cops the original’s title (again). It’s like Chiddy Bang read all the praise for their killer Radiohead sampling track “Because” and decided to exclusively sample blog-hause faves. What happened to the originality that melted my mind on “Fresh Like Us” and “Sooner or Later”? Guys, you’re killin me. Please let me wake up tomorrow and not find PMA creaming over this track like they do over so much overblown blog filler. What happened to standards? I’m just worried we’re not staying authentic.

Hip-Hop Roundup // Chiddy Bang, Kid Cudi, Wale, & DOOM

As you know I am not a big “hip-hopper,” or whatevs, but there are definitely a few acts I have been keeping an intrigued eye on. My fluctuating interest, combined with that fact that the majority the hip-hop I encounter is headed for the radio, has led me to this kind of digest format. There are a gazillion other sites/stations/channels you can get more hip-hop from but I’ll probably stick to this unless something just floors me enough to give it its own post. Read on homie…

Chiddy Bang – Kids ft. MGMT

You may have caught last weeks post on these Philly college freshmen and their mind-blowing jams. Well a few days ago they dropped “Kids” and I was pretty let down. First of all, I already had an MGMT cover/remix roundup a few weeks ago, so nice timing guy! But seriously, although their “Kids” has grown on me since I started writing this post it doesn’t feel as thrilling as their first 5 tracks. Is this the blogosphere version of the sophomore slump? I’m I harshing what would otherwise be a fly mellow? Dunno anymore…

Kid Cudi – Switchin Laneskidcudimxtp

We all know Kid Cudi from my Heads Up ’09 mix and this past week has seen a glut of material from Kanye’s protege. Tidbits have been leaking here and there, including “Switchin Lanes” which I brushed off as a bore at first listen. Then last week Cudi dropped his free The ’09 Mix which gave me a whole new appreciation for the song which is now growing on me like mad.

Kid Cudi – She Came Along

The real jaw dropper is “She Came Along,” Cudi’s twanged out, sunset-on-a-horse, jam that gave me no pause in loving it. I really hope Cudi  goes further down this innovative boundary-pushing trail, and less snooze-fest of “Sky May Fall” (The ’09 Mix) or “The Prayer” (a KiD Named CuDi mix). Other standouts on The ’09 Mix are “Dat New New (VIKING remix)” and “Ask About Me remix” but since both are remixes I won’t pin their awesomeness on Cudi…yet. Seriously, go get The ’09 Mix, it’s not perfect but its solid. And free.

Kid Cudi – I Poke Her Face (feat. Kanye West, Common & A-Trak)

Kid Cudi samples Lady Gaga? Two TBE favs together on one track? Add two more hip-hop heavyweights and a DJ extraordinaire? Umm, yes please! Soooo, why is this song not very remarkable? With so many big names this should sound like a slam-jammer where they really threw down the gloves. Instead it sounds like it was handled with kid gloves….. oh, hahaha, I get it.

Wale – Chillin’ ft. Lady Gagawale

OK, Lady Gaga again, but you would never know it by her cringe-inducing M.I.A.-biting vocals. I love Lady Gaga whole thing she has going on so I am not sure why she would want to toy with her already tenuous legitimacy. Oh well, luckily Wale’s heat and the pure-pop banging production make this FUN in caps. I had heard about Wale (wah-lay) and his legendary mix-tapes for a while now but “Chillin'” was the first track I had actually connected to. With some web-sleuthing I came across this piece of 2007 flashback fantastic-ness.

Wale – W.A.L.E.D.A.N.C.E.

While it’s easy to ride on the production of everyone’s favorite Jackson sampling, Frenchie produced, track Wale really brings it with his lyrics. In 3 minutes and 49 seconds he lays down personality and style to spare and I’m on board. His apology to Mark Ronson for “offend(ing) your sister’s dear friend” is especially funny. Wale’s debut LP Attention: Defecit drops this summer and the hype kinda couldn’t be bigger. I wonder who is gonna come out on top, Wale or Cudi?

DOOM – Gazzillion Ear (Thom Yorke remix)bornlikethis

DOOM, a.k.a. MF Doom, is an ol’ school rapper I have been hearing about for years. His solo work, as well as collaborations with Danger Mouse, Ghostface Killah, and Gorillaz, have made him a familiar name of whom I know almost no music. Well leave it to a Thom Yorke remix to shove his music down the throat of every indie kid with T1 Internet. I can’t say I am in love with this track but the ominous, haunted-house layers Yorke adds sure make you stop and listen. DOOM’s latest LP (and the home of “Gazillion Ear”) Born Like This is out now and although it has got some good reviews I haven’t listened to it. I have a feeling like its for real hip-hop cats and that means not me.

So how was that? Too “urban” for your palette? Want more rhymes and boasts? Are you feeling this Roundup style? Not that I am gonna change a damn thing based on your opinion but nonetheless, I am curious what it is…

Delphic. is on point (Counterpoint)

delphic

just tell me nothing’s wrong, nothing’s wrong, nothing’s wrong today

Delphic – Counterpoint

Today our favorite British pop-pixie Little Boots announced, among other things, a tour with supporting act Delphic. (period included). Touring with Little Boots you say? Hmmm….better check these dudes out. “Counterpoint” huh? I like it…very nice…what? Oh no! I’m floating away on a cloud of flickering keyboards and delicately spastic drums! AAHHhhhhhhh……… Anyway, Delpic. brings the space-rock like a more ethereal Friendly Fires or a less whiny Angels & Airwaves. Ride the space cloud!

Little Boots – New In Town (Fred Falke remix)

It is also recommended that you ride this remix of Little Boots new song. Its about visiting L.A. and having someone show you around that crazy city. So basically its about me. That’s awesome. The original hasn’t dropped yet but oooo-eeee this is hot. I’m so pumped for this album.
