I always knew that one of my favorite songs from the 90s was “Molly (Sixteen Candles)” and that it was performed by Sponge. Hence the reason why I tracked this jam down to put up here. In the process of putting this post together I heard mention of their other hit off their ’94 debut Rotting Piñata, “Plowed.” Not remembering what that sounded like I nabbed it too. Holy shit! It’s that song! “Plowed” is for sure another flashback-inducing formative-years jam that I am embarrassed to admit I did not realize was by Sponge as well. Better for you kids, though. Double whammy flashback this week. Both of these jams are super nostalgia inducing for me. I don’t know why exactly but they both bring an instant surge of nondescript emotion. Crazy.
About a year ago Sia did a guest spot on a track for Lauren Flax called “You’ve Changed.” It was blogged about. People enjoyed it. Life moved on. BUT! Apparently Sia enjoyed it A LOT, cause she jacked the song for her forthcoming LP We Are Born, kicked the jam up 8 notches, and then leaked it for the world to enjoy. That’s how you do it, girl! This thing is dance beast that will get you hyped for sure. That guitar riff is epic and the delivery of “for the be-teh-errr” is on point. Kinda hard to believe this is the same Sia that had everyone crying during the season finale of Six Feet Under. Anyway, I’m stoked on her newfound energy and am looking too see what else she has cooked up for us.

In my never ending quest to make these roundups leaner and meaner this post was supposed to be onl 8 songs deep. Then I started putting everything together and it was one “Oh, shit! What about….” after another. Anyway, here is another remix beast for your weekend pleasure. Some real jamaroonies in this batch so get pumped!
The Cool Kids make hip-hop, and they exist in the world. I’m fine with that. I’m just not that into their stuff. Bring Hey Champ into the mix and now you have my attention. Apparently “Champions” is a track by The Cool Kids that I have never heard before and I’m guessing Hey Champ found it while Googling themselves and decided to make it awesome. It worked. They are champions. Woo. This jam won’t blow you out of your seat but it will make you sink into it a littler cooler and a little sexier. As long as you resist that urge to pop your collar.

I dare you to tell me that the voice you hear in this song evokes the same face you see in this photo. But that’s exactly it! The track has merit, sure, but there is a gloss to it that I tend to slide off of. “Starry Eyed” has ben bouncing around my iTunes for months but was never posted because I never felt certain that Ellie was worth the notice. Then I heard her cover of Sam Sparro’s “Black & Gold” and knew there was something here. With a little research I think I might even like her new single “Under The Sheets” even more than “Starry Eyed.” It has a bit more gravitas. But whatever you think of her solo stuff, she is clearly working on some real shit here. Besides “Black 7 Gold” she has recorded an amazing cover of Bon Iver’s “The Wolves (Act I and II)” as well as Passion Pit’s “Sleepyhead.” Get over your post-Sleepyhead self and check them bot out at PMA because they are serious business. Her fantastic producer Starsmith is due credit as well. I’m hoping for big things from Ellie because i’ve definitely got my eye on this one.

We live in a world with a lot of musical debate and discourse. Too much, even. My aim with TBE is to be like good pair of Bose headphones and filter out that static, bringing you only the best sounds. With that said, I come across a lot of tracks that are highly anticipated, or getting hyped out the ass, but in the end are just not very good? You should know they exists but probably don’t want them diluting the fountain of magical regular posts, right? What am I supposed to do? Well, like any good maniacal despot, I take off my pants, crack a few brews, and get to scheming. My result may be less intimidating than Kim Jong Il’s inner thigh, but I think you will find it more palatable. Welcome to a feature that until seconds ago was titled “Duty VS. Doodie” (I’m not ruling it out) and will periodically recap recent hype-nuggets, for whatever they are worth. Like Kim Jong* said after standing up and grabbing a fresh sixer, “Let’s do this bitch!”
