[LIVE] When Saints Go Machine @ Tauron New Music Festival 8-26-2011

This live review is courtesy of Arletta Przynoga, friend of TBE and mastermind behind Danish music blog Good Because Danish. A native of Poznan, she made the trek to Katowice for the Tauron New Music Festivallast weekend to see the band I was most bummed I couldn’t see: When Saints Go Machine. Cheers to Arletta for the review and double cheers for writing it all in her second language. Read on for her review, some photos (by Agnieszka Wojtaszek) and their great new video for the fantastic “Kelly.”

Over a 5 hours in a boiling trian from Poznań to Katowice. The hottest day of summer in Poland. And I almost missed what I wanted to see and hear so much!

Last Friday, Danish sensational band, When Saints Go Machine, played a wonderful gig on Tauron Nowa Muzyka festival in Katowice.

It was WSGM’s first show in Poland and they were very  Read more

[MP3] The Young Professionals – “D.I.S.C.O.”

‘c’ is for curious, and ‘o’ is for oh my god

♫ The Young Professionals – D.I.S.C.O (Radio Edit)

Oh, did you think you were having a quiet Friday night in? Hahahaha. Just press play and then try, TRY, not getting up and shaking that gorgeous ass of yours (really, it is). Tel Aviv is officially my new favorite city thanks to The Young Professionals and the stunning video (below) they made for this epic Ottowan-sampling jam. I’m not even gonna try and describe this song because you just need to watch/listen on your own and then you will understand.

I almost want to leave The Young Professionals unexplained but it turns out they are way too interesting for that. Besides being from Tel Aviv (a city I get the feeling is way cooler than any of us realize) the duo lives up to their name by being comprised of two guys who already have solid careers of their own. Ivri Lider already has 2 platinum records and 4 gold in Israel and seems to be one of the country’s most respected artists. And it’s no surprise why as he handles dance explosions like “D.I.S.C.O.” just as well as his stunning heartbreak song “Jesse” and even flipping Katy Perry’s “I Kissed a Girl” on it’s head (Listen to “Jesse” and you will understand). Partner in TYP-crime, Yonathan Goldshtein, has also established himself as a formidable producer by working with some of the best in the Israeli music industry. So separately they are damn awesome and together they are The Young Professionals. What does that make us? Damn lucky. Read more

[MP3] On-The-Go – “In The Wind” & “The Whaler”

go wild out there, grow wild out there

♫ On-The-Go – In The Wind

First Pompeya and now On-The-Go!? Russia is killing it this year and my ears couldn’t be happier. It starts with a heartbeat and then from the first second of delicate piano chords and vocals “In The Wind” commands your attention, reeling you further in with every added instrument. Even though there is something very melancholy in the music I can’t help but feel wide open and invigorated every time I hear it. It kinda reminds me of the last Foals album and that is a high compliment.

Hailing from the decaying Russian car industry city of Togliatti, On-The-Go somehow channel a lush equatorial energy that one doesn’t associate with Mother Russia. Take a look at the gorgeous video for “In The Wind” (below) and it may change your mental picture of Russia forever.

♫ On-The-Go – The Whaler

“The Whaler” expands their sound with a little more swagger and swing, bringing in a guitar line that melts my ears with every note. So nice. Anyway, On-The-Go have an EP called One Spark and I will be going to get it now. I suggest you do the same.

[MP3] Luck-One – “Sounds Of My City”

told him that’s not what i came for, and you should ride the train more

♫ Luck-One – Sounds Of My City

Somehow the whole world seems to sleeping on Luck-One and I don’t know why. I tipped off his track “More” last fall and now it looks like we are the first to get behind this city-repping summer jam that gets me in a good mood every time I hear it. Portland’s Luck-One sounds smoother and tighter than ever and I’m loving the old-school flavor and crisp lyrics. I feel like this is what people talk about when they praise early hip hop’s storytelling. Time to track down his debut, True Theory, which came out in March but, big surprise, nobody was talking about it. A damn shame. Cheer up with the simple yet fun video below. Read more

[MP3] IDA MARIA a CHERRY of rocker, pushing my equalizers into the RED

i’m gonna be your girl tonight, i’m gonna make you apple pie

♫ Ida Maria – Cherry Red

Tambourine, bass, guitar, and drums that mean business. Couple that with vocals that both sound and say that she’s having more fun than anyone and it’s hard not to enjoy the steamy bounce and crunch of “Cherry Red.” Go back to the very first post of this blog and you will find my top albums of 2008 list were Norwegian Ida Maria’s debut LP Fortress Around My Heart was praised for putting a nail in the coffin of the stereotype that chicks can’t rock. Ida has been laying low since then, regrouping and rethinking things but luckily for us teamed up with the legendary Butch Walker to produce her follow up LP Katla. It’s already out in Norway and will see worldwide release soon. From the sound of “Cherry Red” as well as the short song/clip “Whatever” below, Ida seems to be as loose and fun as ever and we may be in for another great gleaming chunk of polished chick rock.
