Fountains Of Wayne – Radiation Vibe / 1996

Fountains of Wayne are most famous for their 2003 comeback song “Stacy’s Mom” but it was 1996’s “Radiation Vibe” that first broke them onto the scene and into my heart. But its not all MILFs and underwear-on-the-outside with these guys, they recorded the tite song for That Thing You Do (earning an Oscer nomination) as well as the theme song to MTV prank-call show Crank Yankers. Fountains are still active, their 2007 album even receiving critical acclaim, but despite all that other jazz, to me they will always be the band that made this gem.

Patrick Watson and the song of a Big Bird In A Small Cage

patrickwatson

we all love to sing along to the sound of the bird that longs

Patrick Watson – Big Bird in a Small Cage

It’s Sunday and time to relax a bit. Sit my ass on the couch, stare out the window, and just chill. Right now Patrick Wilson is providing the perfect soundtrack for this kind of Lazy Sunday. He is from Montreal, his music has won all kinds of awards, and his new album Wooden Arms is recommended on eMusic but none of that is going to get me to move my ass until this song is over.

Yuksek has awarded us an Extraball

away-from-the-sea

got the voice of a sinner and the scream out loud

Yuksek – Extraball (ft. Amanda Blank)

Yuksek’s real name in Pierre, he’s French and makes dance music. No surprise it’s pretty killer. “Extraball” may or may not be a rave anthem about pinball but either way I’m all in. Saturday only comes once a week so crank this mutha up and get flailing. His debut album Away from The Sea is out now.

Home Video know I Can Make You Feel It

homevideo

oh to touch the people, ooh to really feel them

Home Video – I Can Make You Feel It

I guess Home Video have been around since 2003 but this is the first I have heard of them and it couldn’t be a second too soon. As a bit of an addict for spastic upbeat indie-pop I struggle to find music I love with a bit mellower vibe. While I wouldn’t call Home Video music “tranquil” or “zen” it certainly does the trick for me, evoking intimacy, earnest passion, and a bit of Thom Yorke. Get their 4 song EP It Will Be OK for FREE from their website and bliss out a bit before Saturday night has it’s way with you.

The Gossip wield a Heavy Cross

it takes two, it’s up to me and you to prove it

The Gossip – Heavy Cross

It took them 3 albums but The Gossip finally got some attention with 2006’s “Standing In The Way Of Control” (below). We all had a few fun listens but they ever grew on me. Now their 4th album, Music For Men, is on the way and the new single “Heavy Cross” is making waves across the blogosphere. I listened to it once. Meh. I moved on. Then I got the Fred Falke remix.* Mah! After letting that rock me for a few days I went back to the original and finally saw what people have been spazzing about. Anyway, don’t know what took me so long. We all slip sometimes. If you are new to The Gossip ten you are going to want to grab the awesome pro-gay-marriage rally song “Standing In The Way Of Control.”

Troy This is living the American Dream… with Robyn!?

troythis

you can always look good when your shit looks bad

Troy This – American Dream (Happy Song) ft. Robyn

Umm, so this is from Troy This’ Last.fm page:

Imagine if Tina turner and David Bowie had a three way in the 80s while Jay-Z videotaped Madonna giving a strip tease while singing over some house remixes of some cop killing hip hop…

What the hell else am I supposed to say? He lives in Los Angeles? He’s got Robyn giving him guest vocals? Yeah, I mean he only gets fresher.

Troy This – Back That Up!

If “American Dream” is the soundtrack to sunny days then “Back That Up!” is for dancing in your underwear (at home or in the club, whatevs). After all, it is Thursday…

Mike Posner and The Brain Trust are definitely Cooler Than Me

mike-posner

you don’t know the way that you look when your steps make that much noise

Mike Posner and The Brain Trust – Cooler Than Me (ft. Big Sean)

When someone drops me a comment recommending an artist its hard to tell whether its a real heads-up or some loser peddling his Creed tribute band. Not one to be a hater without good reason, I set out to come up with one, after all the mixtape is free from iTunes. Trowing it on my iPod and heading out the door I had one the most fun cross-town walks ever, a huge smile plastered across my bouncing head. “Cooler Than Me” (above) is the perfect ode to the too-cool-for-school mean girls we have all met. And how can you listen to The Fray inspired biting “Still Not Over You” (below) and not grin? So anyway, who is this Mike Posner? Clearly, he is white, but don’t lump him in with Eminem or Asher Roth. At 21 and a Duke University junior, he leaves the whiny-whitey act at home and brings straight smokey soul and tight production. Did I mention he uses a live backing band, The Brain Trust? Yeah. Hot. The A Matter Of Time mixtape is the first mixtape I can listen listen to without skipping anything. And its free, so go get it. Seriously.

Mike Posner and The Brain Trust – Still Not Over You (ft. Eric Holljes)

This track is not on A Matter Of Time but is the best rip at Kanye/beer-goggles tribute ever. Ahhh man, its hard to type when you’re laughing.
