  • Why: A year ago the very handsome Art Imperial solidified himself as the gold standard in Canadian garage surf made by Asian dudes. No joke, that EP was one of the best of 2011. And since nobody cam along to challenge his throne he got complacent. What happens when you get complacent? You fall for a girl. What happens when you fall for a girl? You get your shit stomped on. So that happened. But from the ashes of Art’s broken heart we have Cult Of Love. Part therapy, part cautionary tale, part seductively fuzzy surf melodies to kick off the summer to. Crank it up and enjoy. Just don’t get complacent…

I don’t wanna hear one peep about how “summer is almost over!” or “but it’s not even sunny where I am” or “this mix is late” or “my eyes are melting from that album art.” Summer is a frame of mind and TBE is about to whip yours into shape! Now that you have grown tired of your own summer mix as well as all the ones that other blogs put out months ago, it’s time to get the summer mix to not only end all summer mixes, but to end summer itself! (Except thats not even true because I have a specially themed bonus summer mix for next week! Stay tuned…) The Burning Ear 2011 Summer Mega-Mix has something for everyone and happens in a few different waves so it’s best listened to in order.

So smooth out those short shorts, dust off those cocktail umbrellas, slide those shades up on the nose, and feel the warm breeze between your sandy toes because this mix is about to start with a bang. Art Imperial is the name of a man understads the pain of a long winter. Living in Toronto he spent the last winter dreaming of sunnier climates and in an attempt to capture some of that sun-kissed glory he crafted the excellent Surf Suburban EP. It’s as if Best Coast and Wavves stopped toking long enough to actually get on a surfboard and then rode that board into the 60s. But instead of a surfboard it was a guitar. Anyway, “My Crystal” gives you a good idea of the fast and loose California vibes that are ripping through Art Imperial’s music, all of it available for a pay-what-you-want deal at his Bandcamp. Considering his mere 295 listens on Last.fm I’m officially endorsing this EP as the sound of summer. This also may be the perfect post to start brainstorming for a TBE Summer mix. I know this jam will be on it. Or maybe “I Feel Dumb.” Or “Bugs Out My Mind.” Damn. I’ll have to think on it.
