Big Boi – “C.P.U.” ft Phantogram + “Shoes For Running” ft. Wavves & B.o.B

Big Boi Dangerous

as i scroll through the centerfolds, wishing that the screen was three-dimensional, i know it doesn’t seem too conventional, but it’ll do until i get you in the physical

If you are one of the many who pretty much ignored Big Boi’s latest album then I’ve gotta draw your attention to these two tracks. Most of the rest is just a depressing reminder that Vicious Lies is definitely not Sir Lucious Leftfoot 2. Who ever knows why these follow ups often fall off so hard. I do know that Phantogram steams up the glass on slippery sex-jam “C.P.U.” and Wavves’ garage scruff is an awesome addition to “Shoes For Running.” Add on “She Hates Me” and “She Said OK” and Big Boi could have had an airtight gold medal EP. Guaranteed nobody needs all 17 tracks here.

Dubstep Roundup Vol. 30 – 4.20.2012 [Knife Party, Above & Beyond, Picture Book, Chromeo, and more…]

Its Friday boys and girls; how good it feels.

In the middle of planning my next Lights & Music event, I decided to dust out the old Itunes when I found this dubstep roundup that was meant to go up a few weeks ago.  Sorry about that guys.  I’m still trying to find a balance between all of the projects I’ve taken on in the last year.  This roundup reflects the much more melodic side of dubstep; which frankly is what I prefer.   So, in an attempt to just get this bad boy up on the web waves, I’ll skip the wordiness and just press publish.  Have no fear though, the bass is still there, so turn your speakers up and get down with yourself.

P.S.- I’ll have another Dubstep Roundup up in the next couple days.  Until then…

[LP] BRUNO MARS is not JUST THE guy with WAY too much radio play who YOU ARE sick of

and when you smile, the whole world stops and stares for awhile

♫ Bruno Mars – Just The Way You Are

Look, I get it. You hear a song too much on the radio and it’s ruined. You hate it. I get that. But the thing is that while overplay of “Just The Way You Are” may have you hating Bruno Mars, there are others of us out there. Others like me who had never heard the song until 2 weeks ago. Others who may never have heard it yet. This post is for us.

Chalk it up to being so buried in this blog or chalk it up to living in Europe, but I’m usually out of the loop when it comes to radio hits. So when I read about some guy I’d never heard of being nominated for 9 Grammys I figured I’d better check him out. Enter piano man Bruno Mars and his debut LP Doo Wops & Hooligans. This lean 10 song collection had me floored from the first listen. Something about both Mars’ production and voice is so simple and streamlined that it’s endearing. Not a lot of over-production here. And the simple lyrics are instantly relatable. It’s how pop music is supposed to be done. The formula for success on “Just The Way You Are” (above) is simple: crisp and funky beat, delicate piano line, and Bruno’s pipes dropping some saccharine loving on his girl. That’s it! Clean, simple, and beautiful. That’s the way of Bruno Mars. Sure, the majority of these tracks are sappy love songs sung directly to the girl but that’s part of his charm. He’s a simple guy in love with a girl and he just wants to sing about it. It’s a story as old as time and I can get down with that.

♫ Bruno Mars – The Other Side (ft Cee Lo Green & B.O.B.)

Other album highlights are “Grenade,” “Runaway Baby,” “Marry Me,” and “Talking To The Moon,” but album closer “The Other Side” wraps the whole thing up nicely. Cee-Lo and B.o.B jump in to help Bruno kick things up a bit and send us off in style. And that’s when I start the album over again.

Remix Roundup Vol. 25 / 9.12.2010 / Joel & Scott present: Crystal Castles, Mike Posner, The Temper Trap, B.o.B, Rihanna, and more!

Let me introduce ourselves for we are the new faces….  Who are we you ask?  Well I’d like to think we laugh with the sinners and cry with the saints, but honestly we don’t hang out with too many of them saints.  I wish we were clever and able to come up with something sweet to say like this…

Born out of the mouths of wolves and serpents.
Raised up by degenerates and whores in the gutters of your forgotten cities.
Among the spawn of your outcast, your rebuked, your lepers.
Breaking bread with gangsters, hustlers, real motherfuckers
Scorned by your fearful leaders, and your simple masses.
Bearing no marking, no number, no names.
Only one sign, the Rad Omen.
For we are many, for we are many.

But, that would be ridiculous; as that is Rad Omens Bio on Myspace (damn).

The truth is that we are two dudes (Joel & Scott) from Seattle Washington that just love to get Nurdy’ and melt our faces on that dirty d-floor.   Remixes to Us are what platinum haired Bunnies are to Hugh Hefner.  We love Read more

Hip-Hop Digest 2 – 6.26.2010 [Kid Cudi, Kanye, Jay-Z, Big K.R.I.T., B.o.B., …) ]

Yeah, so it’s been a year since volume 1. Nobody said shit was organized around here.

So I just finished compiling and writing everything below and I had to ask myself why I was posting so much mediocre hip-hop when that is not even a genre I focus on here. I think that, however, is precisely the point.* I rarely post hip-hop tracks because they rarely grab me. So much of the big league hip-hop feels so lifeless. Anyway, read on, you’ll see what I mean. Or not. Anyway, here is a bunch of stuff that ranges in quality but all relates to hip-hop in some way.

Remix Roundup Vol. 21 – 5.6.10 – EPIC!!!!

I feel like we know each other well enough that I can be honest with you, right? Well I gotta say that sometimes I put a remix in one of these roundups that I am not totally in love with but is interesting/unique/whatever. I just want you to know that even though this is the longest roundup ever at 17 tracks this is not one of those cases. All these jams are going off and I am soooo stoked to be delivering them to you! Dive in! The water is hott!

} TBE Digest 6 – 2.24.10 [Gorillaz, Lil Wayne, Major Lazer, B.o.B., Broken Social Scene, …]

These Digest’s are tough to do because there are really only two emotions I feel while writing them: disappointment and bewilderment. The former for bands I love that are delivering sub-par baloney and the latter for bands other people love who are delivering sub-par baloney. These opinions are of course only my own and that’s why I persist with this series, because others may be really into these tracks and that is great. Different strokes, ya know. On the other hand, some may just be curious as to what different bands are up to these days. Read it for any reason you want, but know that I write it out of a simple desire to pass along the recent happenings in my musical world that I don’t feel are worthy of their own post. (There seemed to have been some confusion last time) Anyway, read on, trudge through, wade in, sally forth, whatever, just know that this edition is exceptionally long for whatever reason but there are some fun covers awaiting you at the end.

Best Albums of 2009 /// Honorable Mention & EPs

I’m too tired and you’re too anxious. Let’s get this show on the road. I’ll drop some kind of ’09 wrap up speech in “The Best Albums of ’09 / The Top 15” which should be out soooon. In the meantime, nibble on these biscuits. And leave your comments! You guys have piped up louder than ever lately and I love hearing what Team TBE thinks. Cause if two brains are better than one, well than imagi…. ok, we get it, let’s do this!

Oh, and since ranking albums is for wieners (songs are OK) I just alphabetized these lists. I don’t believe in favorites so it would be dishonest of me to attempt some sort of ranking system here. These joints are just the business, each in their own way.
