[PLAYLIST] The Best REMIXES of 2012 – Part 2 (July-Dec)

Man oh man. Could we be in a better world for fun remixes of great songs? Some of the old guard has been slacking in quality lately (RAC, where you at?) but new talent is cropping up in droves. Cyril Hahn practically made his name from that Destiny’s Child remix. Noah Hyde is on the map with amazing work. Manu el Chino nabs his second spot of 2012. Too many great tracks. Get on it for the weekend and check out all the bands and remixers you may have missed through the years. And especially listen to that Years & Years remix. What a genre flip. Mmmm…..

Be sure to catch all the 2012 “BEST OF” lists!

Cover songs are still my favorite way for emerging bands to put their own sound on a hit song and get easy attention. However 2012 was for some reason a slow year for cover songs. Luckily a handful of bands did them well and left us with flipped and twisted takes on old classics and net hits alike. Here are my 10 favorites (#1 at the bottom). What did I miss? Read more

[REMIX] Ben Howard – “The Fear” (Moonlight Matters remix)

i been worryin’ that my time is a little unclear i been worryin’ that i’m losing the one’s i hold dear

♫ Ben Howard – The Fear (Moonlight Matters remix)

I never covered Ben Howard’s album on TBE but I’ve mentioned his epic “Call Me Maybe” cover and the Peking Duck remix of “Old Pine.” I also saw him live last month and he blew me away. All his songs were turned up to 11 and slayed onstage. It was a lot like hearing this Moonlight Matters remix, really. All the good parts of the original are still there but the energy is kicked up a few notches. That climax at 4:57 is pretty much what the concert felt like.

[REMIX] Ben Howard – “Old Pine” (Peking Duk Remix)

we slept like dogs down by the fire side, awoke to the fog all around us, the boom of summer time

♫ Ben Howard – Old Pine (Peking Duk Remix)

Ben Howard is about as smooth and palatable as it gets so an extra does of dubby groove plus bonus whistling is a welcome twist. Sway with me!

[COVER] Ben Howard + Jimmy Fallon, Carly Rae Jepsen and The Roots – “Call Me Maybe”

In case you missed the memo, Carly Rae Jepsen’s “Call Me Maybe” is officially taking over the world. This does mean some good news. Besides the steller Manu el Chino remix there is the version she did with Jimmy Fallon and The Roots which is all kinds of giddy fun. However, the hands down finest piece of music related to the phenomenon is the heart-stopping folk cover by the UK’s Ben Howard. He reinvents the song all over, breathing his own life into the teenage lyrics. The songs takes an eerie twist on the original, buzzing and churning under Howard’s quivering voice. Cover of the year? Yeah, probably.
