The 25 Best Songs of 2010… So Far (Jan-June)

As I’ve been compiling this best songs list I’ve been thinking a lot about what it means to be a great track. Last year I went by play counts to determine what songs I “loved” the most but this year I noticed that the list that came out didn’t really match my perception of my favorites. A lot of my top played songs this year are indeed great songs, but they also happen to be on a great album so they get played by themselves as well as in the course of the album. So I got to thinking about which are the tracks that I seek out, that I crave, that I have to hear every night before bed or every morning to wake up. Those are the songs that make up this list. Songs that for whatever reason hooked me to the point where I need(ed) them in my life this year. Those great albums (and their highlight jams) will get their moment but for now we celebrate the song, or as Read more

MARMADUKE DUKE advise a RUBBER for your LOVER and remember KIDs, no GLOVES, no loves.

you’ve got a whole lot of mystery, baby’s got a bad bad history

♫ Marmaduke Duke – Rubber Lover

After falling hard for Biffy Clyro’s last album I stumbled upon their lead singer’s other band, Marmaduke Duke. Their second album, Duke Pandemonium, came out last may and is filled with the kind of weirdo beats and vocals that could only be the work of a dude who is already making his cash elsewhere. Sometimes that pays off, as on “Rubber Lover” where in under 2 minutes we are taken on a hip shakin’, finger snappin’, funk ride. They change things up on “Kid Gloves” which brings their off-beat sound in a darker direction and fleshes itself out into a full song. Other great tracks on the album include “Heartburn,” “Everybody Dance,” and “Silhouettes” but there are a few mis-fires as well. Anyway, enjoy these for now!

BIFFY CLYRO are blowing my mind like BUBBLES THAT pop over GOLDEN jams. This album RULEs.

he came back and claimed the change, i know his life’s the same again

♫ Biffy Clyro – Bubbles

If you live outside the United Kingdom then Biffy Clyro might be the best band that you have never heard of. Putting out records since 2002, last years Only Revolutions is their 5th and I just got a hold of it, or rather it just got a hold of me. I can’t stop listening to this album. It was not easy picking which jams to put in this post. “Bubbles,” with it’s dancing guitars and churning rhythm section, is my favorite right now but each of the 12 tracks is an absolute winner. These guys nail everything from hard charging rock (“The Golden Rule,” below) to fist-pumping anthems (“The Captain”) to tender and catchy love songs (“Know Your Quarry”). I could go on. I haven’t heard any other Biffy Clyro albums but Only Revolutions is stadium sized rock without all the over-blown baloney that has grown to be associated with the term. I have only been listening to it for 6 days but I know this would have definitely made the Top Albums of 2009 list. If you like what you hear here I guarantee you will like this album. I just have to make sure I don’t burn out on it.
