The Best SONGS of 2011 – Pt. 2 (July-Dec)

Songs are pretty amazing things. It’s magical that such a small thing can be so powerful. In the blink of an eye a song can make you smile, dance, cry, think, laugh, etc. These are the ones that did all those things for me the second half of 2011.  Read more

[QUICKIE] Bombay Bicycle Club – A DIFFERENT KIND OF FIX

♫ Bombay Bicycle Club – Lights Out Words Gone

I really wanted an album full of jams like “Shuffle” & classic fave “Always Like This” but it is not so. Pleasant but not blowing minds 6/10

[Quickies are mini-reviews that can fit into a 140 character tweet. They are of albums that people already know of but perhaps are curious about our take on it. What did you think of the disc?]

[STREAM] Bombay Bicycle Club – “Shuffle”

you gave to me all i know, i will stay here i will not go

Some songs take a while for me to figure out if they are post-worthy but this one had a post clinched in the first 12 second. Bombay Bicycle club are responsible for one of the best songs in the history of this blog, as well as some of the most forgettable albums, so I am pumped to see them killing it again. Perhaps I never gave their debut LP enough chances and perhaps Flaws just took some growing but all I know is I’m happy to have this song in my ears. It is exactly this kind of complex and infectious indie-pop that I want these guys to be making. Because when they nail it nobody does it better.

A Different Kind Of Fix is the new LP and  is out August 29th. I can’t wait.

Remix Roundup /// Vol. 8 – Reflect & Unwind

I can’t believe it’s August already. I can’t believe TBE is almost 6 months old. I can’t believe this is the 8th roundup of remixes. I can’t believe you are still reading this. OK, now I really can’t believe it. I cant. Seriously, nothing you say can make me believe you are still reading this. It’s called belief dude, it’s personal, I don’t have to explain or justify it. I mean, yeah, I guess if I saw you reading it I would ‘believe’ but that’s not even the point. The point is that there are so many fresh remixes down there and you are still reading this garbage. Some people, man, some people.

The 20.9 Best Songs of 2009… So Far / Jan.-June

Art by Odili Donald Odita

Art by Odili Donald Odita

How freaking crazy is it that 2009 is already halfway over? What a crazy year so far, in so many ways, the least of which is all of the fantastic, surprising, and sometimes disappointing music that has come our way. TBE will be 5 months old in a week and we have been chronicling most of the year’s jams. Here are my top 20.9. I guarantee you wont agree with all of them but doesn’t that just make our friendship that much more deep and meaningful? Just so we are clear how I arrived at this particular order, I’ve selected my favorites from my top listens each month and then ordered them purely by total play count. I know that’s confusing but whatever, the list is after the jump.

Bombay Bicycle Club – Always Like This

Woah-ly shit! This song just barreled me over the first time I heard it! This is what I’m talkin’ about, baby! I guess Bombay Bicycle Club have a couple EPs and a single release under their belt and “Always Like This” is the first single from their upcoming debut LP, I Had the Blues But I Shook Them Loose. They get a lot of Arctic Monkeys comparisons but I think thats just cause they are still teenagers (what!?) like the Arctics were when they blew up.  Anyway, the “Always Like This” single comes tomorrow with remixes by Tim Goldsworthy (LCD Soundsystem), and others. Going back into Bombay Bicycle Club’s brief song-ography it’s clear that they have come a long way since their initial, NME-backed, hype storm in 2007. “Always Like This” sees them adding layers of deph to their jangly/jaunty vibe. Want another gem to tie you over until the full LP? Ok, fine, but I warn you that these are not as powerful as “Always Like This” although they do illustrate their rapidly evolving talent. “Open House” is a rawer, churning rocker from their first EP The Boy I Used To Be (above).

Bombay Bicycle Club – Open House

Their single Evening/Morning garnered some attention last year but it’s widely available to the google-savvy and I personally prefer it’s mellower, more intimate, b-side.
