Blind Date is the finest monthly new music showcase in LA and yes I happen to co-organize it, yes it is turning 21, and yes you will fee stupid if you miss it tonight. We are celebrating our 21st edition with a kick ass lineup of Burning Ear favorites from nearly every genre we love. I’m getting hot just thunking about it.

[LIVE] Jessie Ware @ The Bootleg 12.13.12

Jessie Ware’s “Wildest Moments” is one of my top songs of the year. But I’m not fully sold on the rest of Devotion. Beautiful? Sure. But worthy standing for in a crowded venue? I wasn’t sure. But I was damn curious. Ware took the stage a little hesitantly for her Los Angeles debut (and only 2nd US solo show ever) but by the end of the first song she was breaking into stage banter about misplaced “trousers” that had the whole crowd laughing in the palm of her hand. Army Navy opened. Tribes after that. The room was pretty full for both and people watched. Then Meg Myers came on and I realized that nobody had really been watching the previous bands because now they were really watching. Listening. Entranced. Myers’ diminutive frame held the audience through fantastic renditions of the songs off her great debut EP and a few others. With her on stage, her body taken hostage by the music and it’s emotions, its clear she is a talent here to stay. Well, not on stages this small but you know what I mean. Anyone in LA would be wise to catch her at one of her 2 remaining residency dates. They are free. Its a no brainer.
