Ellie Goulding’s voice has always been her biggest ally and her overproduction her biggest foe. Here we get a hyper minimal cover of “Lights” laid under the gorgeous vocals of Wanderhouse’s Marie Moreshead. It’s beautiful, haunting, and better than anything Ellie’s has ever done. (except when she does the covering) Props to producing partner Doctor Rosen Rosen for knowing when to reign it in.
Army Navy opened. Tribes after that. The room was pretty full for both and people watched. Then Meg Myers came on and I realized that nobody had really been watching the previous bands because now they were really watching. Listening. Entranced. Myers’ diminutive frame held the audience through fantastic renditions of the songs off her great debut EP and a few others. With her on stage, her body taken hostage by the music and it’s emotions, its clear she is a talent here to stay. Well, not on stages this small but you know what I mean. Anyone in LA would be wise to catch her at one of her 2 remaining residency dates. They are free. Its a no brainer.

Why: Doctor Rosen Rosen continues his domination by collaboration with new project Wanderhouse. He reigns in the infection beats and lets the negative space do the talking. Well, that and the crystalline voice of Marie Moreshead. Filled with tension, sex, and passion it’s wonderful teaser for hopefully more to come soon.

Why: Our man Doctor Rosen Rosen has already established his chops as a remixer and solo artist. His ever expanding world now includes Tennessee native Meg Myers and her Rosen-produced EP Daughter In The Choir. From epic pop groovers (“Adelaide”) to piano-led ballads (“After You”) to strings and bellowing confessionals (“Monster”), her music is laced with a darkness that gives it a sturdy weight. This pop is solid.

Ahem! Excuse me. If you thought you were taking a break because last weekend was New Years Eve then forget it. This is the first weekend of 2012 and it’s time to kick things off right. Below is a list of the best remixes of the past 6 months and they are quite restless so please let them out this weekend. Walks and feeding are optional.
Any glaring errors in judgement? Any additions you would make? Any good pizza in L.A.?
22. ♫ Beethoven – Moonlight Sonata (Sound Remedy Remix) / Don’t fuck with a classic unless you are going to do it justice. That goes double for my dog Beethoven. Good thing justice was served! Plus: wobbles I can stand.
17. ♫ M83 – Midnight City (Alcala Remix) / One of the top remixed songs of the year had stiff competition but Alcala’s slow build explodes the original into the stratospheric massiveness that it always hinted at.
11. ♫ Rihanna – We Found Love (Viceroy Remix) / Don’t hate. Dance. And make weird noises to the beat. No better or more refreshing take on this saturated jam.
8. ♫ Citizens! – True Romance (Gigamesh Remix) / From the moment Gigamesh drops that beat it’s all over. The windows are down and I’m practically climbing out the window to get the whipping wind on my face. Thank goodness for seat belts.
4. ♫ KAMP! – Cairo (Moullinex Remix) / This one gets stuck in your head and then lays little dancing critters that bust synchronized dance routines every time you poorly sing along.
1. ♫ The Notorious B.I.G – Everyday Struggle (Frogs in Socks BiG Bootleg) / Just as you get your head around the odd and minimal beat you realize that Biggie sounds clearly than ever and everything fits in such an awkwardly perfect way you wonder how such a thing could exist. Then you understand that the world is full of all sorts of miracles that nobody can explain.

Coming off his best-of-list-makingBritney remix, Doctor Rosen is back with an EP of his own production with a harem of talented ladies providing the vocals. The appropriately titled EP, Girls Vol. 1, features the talents of Jessie & The Toy Boys, Kay, Meg Meyers, and my favorite, Anjulie. “Sex-Ed” is a sugary sweet polished pop nugget that wears it’s intentions pinned to it’s high rise panties. Sounds about perfect to me. Â Dont think too much on these tracks, just enjoy. And perhaps include in a not-so-subtle mixtape for the pool boy…
Get the whole EP free, and admire the lovely ladies, here. And since it’s Friday why not extend the party with a stellar bonus Doctor Rosen Rosen remix of one of the Girls?
Strap on your shufflin’ shoes and make sure to stretch ’cause this list is an unmerciful messenger delivering jams of the highest quality. Some of these remixes have been banned by certain unenlightened governments for igniting dance parties and group high-fives so share with care.
This edition is chock full of TBE Remix alums and a few newbies shaking things up. Everyone’s favorite, Passion Pit, nab two spots while newbie Star Slinger clinches two more. In a massive non-surprise, RAC takes a heavy slice of this pie with a full 5 slots. Hey, it’s not my fault the guy is a genius. Stay tuned to the number 1 spot to see which brand-newcomers got the number 1 spot and then make sure to leave your thoughts and additions in the comments.
25 – ♫ Britney Spears – Till The World Ends (DOCTOR ROSEN ROSEN Remix) / This isn’t so much “Till The World Ends” but more “After The World Ended.” The Britney comeback party starter gets a post-apocalyptic haunted castle treatment with the “oooh oooh”s providing a completely different effect..
