A Playlist for Stevie’s Postcard Project

So my little buddy Stevie is embarking a pretty big journey tomorrow and I’m trying to help him calm his nerves. He started this Kickstarter project to build some friends to send postcards to. If thats confusing you can check out his project because he explains it better than me. However, I did make him a playlist for his travels and figured I would share it with you guys!

When I played him the playlist he had a few comments I’ll include here. Enjoy and please do check out his project!

1. Coldplay – Postcards From Far Away

Yeah, thats me sending postcards from far away!

2. Paula & Karol – Goodnight Warsaw

Well not “Goodnight” because I haven’t met Warsaw yet so I’m gonna sing “Hello Warsaw!”

3. Rogue Wave – Postage Stamp World

Yea I think thats my new world…

4. Joywave – London

Its dark and weird but I like it. Did I just describe my future feelings on London?

5. Fake Blood – London

Even darker! Woah!

6. RDGLDGRN – Lootin In London

I’ll certainly try not to… and I’ll give stern looks to any looters I see!

7. Jukebox The Ghost – Postcard

A love song about Postcards! My favorite kind of love song!

8. Friendly Fires – Paris
9. Magic Man – Paris
10. Explosions In The Sky – Postcard From 1952
11. Little Dragon – Paris
12. Kate Nash – Paris

13. Jens Lekman – A Postcard to Nina

Yeah you gotta explain to Nina’s dad whats going on. Sounds confusing!

14. Is Tropical – Berlin
15. The Young Professionals – Fuck Off Berlin

Strong feelings about Berlin! I wonder if my feelings will be that strong…

16. Peter Bjorn And John – School Of Kraut

Its like German surf music! But I don’t think I will be surfing in Berlin…

17. Beirut – Postcards From Italy

I’m not going to Italy but I appreciate the mention of postcards.

18. Bayside – Phone Call From Poland

They should have called this song “A Postcard from Poland” but maybe that never happened to them. I could fix that!

19. Maximo Park – Postcard Of A Painting

I prefer postcards with pictures of rivers or trees or buildings. Just my personal preference.

20. Europe – The Final Countdown

GAH! The countdown is real and I only have hours to pack! Gotta go!

[PLAYLIST] The Best REMIXES of 2012 – Part 2 (July-Dec)

TBE-Best-of-2012-Remixes

Man oh man. Could we be in a better world for fun remixes of great songs? Some of the old guard has been slacking in quality lately (RAC, where you at?) but new talent is cropping up in droves. Cyril Hahn practically made his name from that Destiny’s Child remix. Noah Hyde is on the map with amazing work. Manu el Chino nabs his second spot of 2012. Too many great tracks. Get on it for the weekend and check out all the bands and remixers you may have missed through the years. And especially listen to that Years & Years remix. What a genre flip. Mmmm…..

Be sure to catch all the 2012 “BEST OF” lists!

[REMIX] AlunaGeorge – “Your Drums, Your Love (Friendly Fires Remix)”

i’ve been treading water for your love, whether i sink or swim, it’s you i’m thinking of

It’s been a while since we covered AlunaGeorge’s oddball breakout jam “Disobey” and they have only been gaining more steam since then. Latest jam “Your Drums, Your Love” is a fine example of their growth as a band but this spacey tropical rubdown from Friendly Fires is truly magical. Its Summer and Fall neatly packaged into one fine Friday evening gem.

[MIX] TBE Presents: The Tropical Assault Summer Mix

Artwork by Jacob Youngblood Ziegler

If the TBE 2011 Summer Mega-Mix taught us anything its that summer isn’t over until we say it is! This Tropical Assault mix is our final battle against the forces of autumn, seemingly lurking at every turn these past months. We will not down with out a fight and thankfully there are 14 finely tuned weapons at our disposal, poised and ready to be unleashed on any ear feeling the slightest bit of frost. So throw back the curtains, turn up the speakers, bask in that fantastic artwork, and let’s take summer by it’s horns.

Whereas the Mega-Mix flowed through genres like a summer’s day’s variety of cocktails, this mix is a more hardened and focused thing, culling the collective forces of all things tropical. Whether it be steel drums, bongos, sunny synths, or just a splash of sea water, these songs share that certain tropical something that has been infecting my ears so much lately. Summer on! Read more

Remix Roundup Vol. 36 – 1.14.2011 [STAR SLINGER, ALI LOVE, GRUM, ARCADE FIRE, and more… ]

Welcome back to TBE our fellow Nurds’.

Its been two weeks, but like always, Joel & Scott are back to present Remix Roundup Vol. 36.

Listen party peeps, in 10 we were supposedly “ready for a good night“, but let us tell you something little bit different for 11.  In 11, we are going to create that good night.   Why? Cuz this one goes to 11 and its  time for some funky, dazzling, crunk, promiscuous, weird shite to go down.  And, if that aint enough to motivate you.  The apocalypse is approaching scary fast these days…

In 11, we forget the fly whips and go with fly chicks, and if your down… you might come to TBE to check out some wicked ass hits.

OHH YEAHZ.  ENJOY BITCHES!

} TBE Digest 6 – 2.24.10 [Gorillaz, Lil Wayne, Major Lazer, B.o.B., Broken Social Scene, …]

These Digest’s are tough to do because there are really only two emotions I feel while writing them: disappointment and bewilderment. The former for bands I love that are delivering sub-par baloney and the latter for bands other people love who are delivering sub-par baloney. These opinions are of course only my own and that’s why I persist with this series, because others may be really into these tracks and that is great. Different strokes, ya know. On the other hand, some may just be curious as to what different bands are up to these days. Read it for any reason you want, but know that I write it out of a simple desire to pass along the recent happenings in my musical world that I don’t feel are worthy of their own post. (There seemed to have been some confusion last time) Anyway, read on, trudge through, wade in, sally forth, whatever, just know that this edition is exceptionally long for whatever reason but there are some fun covers awaiting you at the end.

Friendly Fires haters can just Kiss Of(f). Life is too short to not be On Board.

FriendlyFires

a thousand butterflies from your lips to mine

♫ Friendly Fires – Kiss of Life

One of the the things that has always impressed my about Friendly Fires is their ability to craft songs of a variety of vibes while still keeping their ‘sound’ or ‘voice’ or whatever. None of the songs on their debut LP sound alike and any one could stand alone as a single. Well then, it’s a treat to have bonus track of sorts. “Kiss Of Life” was released/leaked recently and it looks like it will be one of three new tracks on their album re-release set for August 31st. At first listen I brushed it off but after a few more spins and a look at the simple yet effective video I was sold. And come one, at 2:30, when the drums snap it all back together just try not to air-drum. Ba ba ba ba ba ba ba… ta ta ta TATATATA! Hell yeah! More like “Kick Of Life.” In your pants!

♫ Friendly Fires – On Board

“On Board” is the first track I discovered by FF and an underrated early single off of the album. Comparing it’s goofball video to the one for “Kiss Of Life” is an interesting study in the evolution of the band’s public persona. Maturity? Hype = pressure to be hip? Passion for color replaced with desire to wear all black in the desert?
