“These Chains” & “Let It Be Him” are top but nothing touches the heights of magic on their last 2 LPs. Great listening but feels a bit safe.

[VIDEO] Hot Chip – “Night & Day”

I am generally excited about all things Hot Chip but the first taste (“Flutes“) of upcoming LP In Our Heads felt uninspired. “Night & Day” feels like it’s definitely moving in the right direction and even has this weirdo fun video too. Love the muscle dudes’ moves. Are we gonna get a sequel?

  • Who: Joe Goddard from Hot Chip and some guy called Raf Rundell
  • What: Key driven spazz funk, like Hot Chip, Hot Chip, Hot Chip
  • Where: London + Facebook / Amazon
  • When: Debut LP Be Strong is out Jan 30th.
  • Why: Apparently while Joe Goddard was stealthily making sweet jams under his own name, he was also making slightly less secretive tracks as one of The 2 Bears. Their remix of Death Cab (below) made the rounds earlier last year and now their single “Work” is geting bodies moving worldwide. I don’t know why Goddard is such a side-project slut but if all the illegitimate musical love babies sound this good then do it, Joe.

[EP] Joe Goddard – “Gabriel” (feat. Valentina)

the sum of all the parts that you have taken are a fraction of the parts that make me whole

Joe Goddard’s Gabriel EP is only three tracks but when you are dealing with one of the Hot Chip frontmen that’s all that’s needed to lay down some serious song. The guy’s last solo album, Harvest Festival, meandered a bit and didn’t really sink in but this leaner and meaner release is all bite. The title track (above) packs serious punch, weaving Valentina’s epic vocals over an unstoppable beat that steamrolls through my speakers. “All I Know” takes nearly 10 minutes to run it’s course but with Goddard doing his signature love-song crooning over minimalist production that slowly evolves to be maximally transfixing, it is really OK. Meditative, even. “Jump” lives up to it’s name and gets a bit bonkers but at that point I’m so blissed out I don’t even care. Then the dub mix of “Gabriel” is just a victory lap for the short loop of great sounds.

Happy 2nd Birthday to The Burning Ear!

Holy cow. It was exactly 2 years ago (!?) today that I launched The Burning Ear from the butt wedge of my old couch.
