The 25 Best Songs of 2010… So Far (Jan-June)

As I’ve been compiling this best songs list I’ve been thinking a lot about what it means to be a great track. Last year I went by play counts to determine what songs I “loved” the most but this year I noticed that the list that came out didn’t really match my perception of my favorites. A lot of my top played songs this year are indeed great songs, but they also happen to be on a great album so they get played by themselves as well as in the course of the album. So I got to thinking about which are the tracks that I seek out, that I crave, that I have to hear every night before bed or every morning to wake up. Those are the songs that make up this list. Songs that for whatever reason hooked me to the point where I need(ed) them in my life this year. Those great albums (and their highlight jams) will get their moment but for now we celebrate the song, or as Read more

} TBE Digest 8 – 4.30.10 [Blur, Hole, Hot Chip, LCD Soundsystem, Passion Pit, Nada Surf…]

How-dilly, ho-dilly, neighbors! I’m currently cooking up all kinds of excitement behind the scenes here at TBE so I’m not gonna stick around and chat. You know the deal, these are the jams that are more ‘newsworthy’ then ‘noteworthy’ so that you can stay up to speed on all the latest music hitting the web without reading as many damn blogs as I do. To cleanse the palette I’ve got a bundle of covers to close things out. Enjoy!

For more jams or by any of these artists use the ‘tags’ links at the bottom of the post!

♫ Blur – Fool’s Day / Record Store Day is an annual thing and it happened not too long ago. Blur released their first new track in forever and this is it. It’s a good little jam but I imagine that If I had ever loved Blur then I would be into this more. Read more

Remix Roundup Vol. 19 / 4.2.10 / [RAC, Penguin Prison, Neon Trees, Hot Chip …]

You ask, you receive. Remixes are back with more reading for your pleasure! Crank that volume knob and dive in!

♫ Penguin Prison – Worse It Gets (RAC Mix) / Damn. Jams don’t get much fresher than this. I haven’t heard the original yet but I couldn’t wait another moment to share this slice of audio perfection. Penguin Prison and RAC are both firing on all cylinders on this buttery smooth funk fest. This jam could cure depression if administered in daily doses. For reals.

♫ Edward Sharpe & The Magnetic Zeroes – Home (RAC Mix) / RAC doing his magic on this recent modern classic of a love song. This kind of remix is a perfect example of why I love RAC so much. the dude can pack on the beats and make Read more

HOT CHIP’s latest could easily fill an ALLEY full of funky hepCATS

♫ Hot Chip – Alley Cats

After much hype, anticipation, and dancing to it’s two leaked tracks, Hot Chip’s 4th studio album is finally out. One could write pages on Hot Chip, their music, and it’s critical/popular reception, but to boil it down, One Life Stand is their most solid album yet. Coming On Strong introduced them with an “electro-soul” sound that seemed like a gimmick and was a bit too mellow for me. The Warning saw them up the ante with the instant dance classic “Over And Over” tucked into an otherwise pleasantly flat collection. Made In The Dark broke them to popular audience with a handful of great and quirky dance anthems but the album never felt cohesive. With One Life Stand they have toned back the dance tunes and honed in on the ballads to reach a balance that holds itself together perfectly. Hot Chip are clearly more confident then ever as they seem to be grasping at less straws and taking each musical decision to it’s logical extent. Their shortest track list yet sees all 10 tracks run over 4 minutes and none should be skipped. One Life Stand’s centerpiece is a 3 track block of tenderness that offers a well timed respite from the rollicking good times that bookend the album. “Alley Cats” closes out those 3 tracks and it’s dual vocals, delicate beat, and sparse instrumentation are a perfect example of Hot Chip at their finest. Many can do dance but few can also do this.

} TBE Digest 4 • 12/30/09 [Hot Chip, Ted Leo, Crookers, Wiley, R Kelly, Smashing Pumpkins, & more]

Because sometimes good songs have no place in a post of their own. But mostly, just because I am not down with a jam doesn’t mean you shouldn’t hear it too.

Get caught up with the last tidbits of 2009 after the jump.

Instrumental Mini-Mix with Joe Goddard, Portasound, MarchFourth, and Sensual Harassment

If any of you are studying/working/thinking deep thoughts as much as me then you might want some tunes to keep you company. Here are some instrumental jams I have been listening to lately. Tunes without those pesky lyrics to distract you but not so mellow as to put you to sleep.

Joe Goddard♫ Joe Goddard – Apple Bobbing

Hot Chip’s Joe Goddard just dropped his solo debut, Harvest Festival, and it sounds kinda like half-baked Hot Chip rejects. To be fair, it’s clearly a different project but it just doesn’t have the staying power of his other job. “Apple Bobbing” is my jam on the album. It retains a bit of that Hot Chip flavor as it blends nicely into the background of whatever you are doing. As for the rest of the disc, there a few other worthwhilers but in general it’s not so much offensive or boring, just not a revelation. Joe doesn’t have his own MySpace but you can hear some tracks at the record label’s page.(eMusic)

Portasound♫ Portasound – Press Red For Burt Baccarach

Portasound hail from London and have named themselves after a cheap type of keyboard. The emphasis is definitely on the music here as they rip through 5 minutes of rad music without uttering one word. NME has noticed them and hopefully more will soon. These guys need a record deal and we need an album. They have quite a few more jams over at their MySpace but I don’t have the time to listen to them all so someone fill me in, yeah? (MySpace)

MarchFourth♫ MarchFourth – Crack Haus

The MarchFourth Marching Band are a Portland, Oregan based marching band/performance troupe who have a 2007 live album under their belt and have just released Rise Up, an album I don’t have but desperately need. These guys know how to do instrumental music. “Crack Haus” easily stands alone as an entertaining piece of music but I can imagine that combined with a killer live show and some acrobatics it goes to a whole new level. (MySpace /// eMusic)

Sensual Harassment♫ Sensual Harassment – Daddy Long Legs

Besides having the best band name of the year, Sensual Harassment are killing it with the album art as well. That kind of icing on top of a jam-cake like “Daddy long Legs” is pure sweetness. Yeah, ok, so there are some minimal vocals towards the end of this one but repeating “everybody party” shouldn’t chaff your business too much. The Brooklyn based dudes have two other jams available at eMusic but no proper release yet. Stay tuned. (MySpace /// eMusic)
