The 25 Best Songs of 2010… So Far (Jan-June)

As I’ve been compiling this best songs list I’ve been thinking a lot about what it means to be a great track. Last year I went by play counts to determine what songs I “loved” the most but this year I noticed that the list that came out didn’t really match my perception of my favorites. A lot of my top played songs this year are indeed great songs, but they also happen to be on a great album so they get played by themselves as well as in the course of the album. So I got to thinking about which are the tracks that I seek out, that I crave, that I have to hear every night before bed or every morning to wake up. Those are the songs that make up this list. Songs that for whatever reason hooked me to the point where I need(ed) them in my life this year. Those great albums (and their highlight jams) will get their moment but for now we celebrate the song, or as Read more

JAVELIN are full of good VIBRATIONZ and good advice

gettin’ cleared up is easy, do it now so we can get sleazy

♫ Javelin – Vibrationz

Javelin’s “Oh! Centra” and it’s potty-mouthed squirrel vocals has quickly become one of my favorite songs of the year and although their debut LP No Mas is not exactly on par with that jam’s grooviness it is certainly good stuff. Javelin are pretty eclectic and play with rapping, singing, and instrumental, of which the excellent “Vibrationz” is (pretty much) the latter. 3 minutes of straight funked up grooves that beg for sunlight and summer breezes. This laid back sunshine-pop is much more the norm for Javelin then the spastic “Oh! Centra” but so far I’m loving both. I went back and got Javelin’s 2009 FREE mixtape Jamz N Jemz (best name ever) and discovered more laid back funk as well as this fantastic token weird rap song. Only this one is about STDs and safe sex. Good times.

♫ Javelin – STD Fury

So for more tastes of No Mas make sure to check out the mashup Dave Wrangler did with their “Intervales Theme” and Jay Z. This Pitchfork piece is also pretty great. It covers Javelin’s early days utilizing 20 shitty boom-boxes as their sound system for concerts. Awesome. And get Jamz N Jemz. Free, baby, free!

Remix Roundup Vol. 20 – 4.16.10 [Bloc Party, Tegan & Sara, Neon Indian, Brahms…]

Some real gems up in here. A couple ass-shakers, mood setters, and a trifecta of hip-hop sampling mashups to round things out. Get in!

♫ Marmaduke Duke – Kid Gloves (Electrically Charged Boy remix) / It’s this remix that inspired me to track down Marmaduke Duke’s jams and if you’re listening then you know why. I can’t stop grooving to Read more

JAVELIN make me go OH! It’s suddenly freak CENTRAl station in here!

i try to stroke you, you play me like sudoku

♫ Javelin – Oh! Centra

Javelin’s MySpace url is “/hotjamzofjavelin” and that should give a pretty good idea about what you are in for with these guys. These two Brooklyn sound noodlers dropped a couple even-too-weird-for-me jams last year but their amped-up remix of The Very Best’s “Julia” was the second best remix of last year. Their latest effort is “Oh! Centra” which features a chipmunk rapping about kicking a kangaroo, dancing like a monkey, and engaging in various other left-of-centra (Ha!) activities. When perfectly blended with their already oddball beats, the result is undeniably fresh. Drop this at your next dance party and you will instantly weed out the boring people. Wait until the last 30 seconds and you will also weed out the people who dont like grunting suggestively to rodent-rap while humping the couch. If that means that I’m the only one still getting down then we gotta invite more people to your next party.

The 29 Best Remixes of 2009

I don’t know about you but 2009 was the year I fell in live with remixes. Starting TBE opened up my world to so many amazing reinterpretations of both great and not so great songs. Having always been more of a cover song guy this was new territory for me but I dove in headfirst and have been enjoying the ride so far. Good music is a personal thing and messing with great music is even more so. This is very much a subjective list and is based on nothing besides how much I love and respect the work done. Oh, and the numbering system is pretty much bullshit but I had to put them in some kind of order. Anyway, enjoy. I certainly have.

Remix Roundup: 10-21-09

skull252As the Remix Roundups enter double digits I decided to drop the incremental titles and go for a more archive-friendly date format. You will thank me someday. About this collection of hot remixes? You can thank me now.

♫ The Very Best – Julia (Javelin Re-do) / This is one of the best remixes I’ve heard in a while. Javelin takes one of the weaker tracks off of TVB’s fantastic album and completly rips it up, turning “Julia” in to a full throttle fist-pumper. [more The Very Best]

♫ The Gossip – Love Long Distance (Fake Blood Remix) / I haven’t even heard the original version of this song yet but i’m worried that after this I am just going to be disappointed. So far The Gossip’s remixes have treated me better than their originals. [more Gossip/FB]
