[MP3] Negative Youth – “Sons & Daughters”

[soundcloud id=’122109198′]

South Africa’s Negative Youth just released their debut track “Sons & Daughters” and it sounds like Chvrches if they weren’t so afraid of dancing. Music for under-lit basement parties and driving around town in your parents sedan. Long time TBE readers will recognize producer Johnny Kotze as the genius behind Johnny Neon. For Negative Youth he has teamed up with Johannesburg vocalist Eve Rakow and I’m just hoping that this project is as durable as those killer leather jackets.

[PLAYLIST] The Best Party Songs of 2012

2012 was a fantastic year for party songs. It seems that music is having more fun than ever and I couldn’t be happier to share it with you all. LETS DO A SUMMER MIXTAPE with [RAC, Adventure Club, Goldroom, Viceroy, DWNTWN, Ghost Beach, Cry Wolf and Lights & Music]

When I first started the blog feature on Lights & Music last month, this mixtape was the first idea that I put into action.  Wikipedia, in-short describes mixtapes as usually reflecting the musical tastes of its compiler, a conceptual mix of songs linked by a theme or mood tailored to the tape’s intended recipient.  Yeah sure, we’ve all made mixtapes before.  But, what happens when you get a bunch of artists and bloggers to make a mixtape with the intended recipient being you?  Thats what I wanted to find out.  The concept is simple, yet I hadn’t really seen it anywhere else.

Everyone was given two selections.  They could either choose two tracks defining their summer so far in 2012 or one new and one all-time summer favorite.  Sounds simple enough in theory, but narrowing down your favorite jams to fit that criteria was tough.  That said, this was a fun project and I intend on making this a annual event.

Without further ado, please enjoy and share with others. Read more

[PLAYLIST] The Best SONGS of 2012 – Part 1 (Jan-June)

Lets not talk about the fact this year is already half over. Thats just insane. About as insane as the quality of jams that have been pumping through TBE HQ’s speakers these past 6 months. Here is the best of the best. Did I miss any? Did you miss any?

(Thanks to Vladimir Bobritskiy for the album art.)

[REMIX] Johnny Neon – Hearts (Who Killed JR’s Tony Danza remix)

just listen up homeboy, we don’t give a shit if you don’t like the way we make noise

♫ Johnny Neon – Hearts (Who Killed JR’s Tony Danza remix)

We all know and love Johnny Neon from his infectiously furry jam/video “Hearts” and we remember Who Killed JR from their top remix of 2011 (M83) and we may even remember when this very collaboration was posted by Joel a few weeks back. Or more likely we don’t remember anything because the world is falling apart and its all any of can do to remember to not get murdered by a rabid Mayan fearing for the end of days. So that’s why I’m posting special reminder with this jam. Get more Johnny Neon in your life. Get more Who Killed JR too.

[VIDEO] Johnny Neon – “Closer”

Happy Easter to those of you that do that thing. What better day to kick back with some videos! First of all, if you haven’t got into Johnny Neon’s awesomely furry video for “Hearts” then start there. Epic song and video. Then dive into this bit of team-building for “Closer.” No dogs (unfortunately) but still somehow put a smile on my face. This guy is solid.

[MP3 & VIDEO] Johnny Neon – “Hearts”

♫ Johnny Neon – Hearts

  • Who: Johnny Kotze
  • What: Dreamwave Indie Dance Pop – like Miami Horror, Neon Indian, New Order
  • Where: Cape Town + Facebook / Soundcloud / Amazon
  • When: Release dates?
  • Why: If there was ever a tune to brighten up these cold winter days, its this South African gem right here.  Located in Cape Town, producer and musician Johnny Kotze started Johnny Neon in 2004 as a art project.  Neon uses old vintage electronics and synthesizers to create what he calls “80’s inspired aestehetics of sunsets, palm trees, night drives and the love lost youth culture”.  Not only is this song rad as can be, but the video is pretty much the most totally awesome piece of work ever created.   We can now all be thankful this “art project” crawled out of its crib and grew legs.  I’ll cheers to that.
