Brandon’s TBE Digest 31 – [12.11.2011] New Jams, Remixes, & Covers!

Artwork by Jacob Youngblood Ziegler

Brandon’s TBE Digest is a place where I gather up all the recent jams that are worth a listen (or 10) but don’t necessarily need their own post. Here you will find new tracks by known bands, remixes, covers, and even mashups if they are interesting. My favorites of the lot are in bold.

This may be the last Digest I do like this. I’d really like to take the time to give the best of these tracks the solo post they deserve. If anyone feels strongly about this news leave it in the comments below. Otherwise rock on Wayne and rock on Garth.

♫ Saint Motel – At Least I Have Nothing / New Saint Motel jam. I like. Lets get a full album out, guys!

♫ Arrange – Sun Showers / New Arrange track is as blissfully beautiful as you would expect but I still prefer hearing this guy in full albums. Getting lost in it.

♫ Gotye – Showdown Below My Sombrero / This instrumental bonus Read more

♫ M83 – OK Pal

This should probably just be a Quickie but how could I honestly fit a double-album review into 140 characters!?

Ok, we all love the crap out of “Midnight City” and many of it’s remixes but what about the rest of the double album of Hurry Up, We’re Dreaming? Songs like “Wait” and “OK Pal” have floated about the blogosphere a bit but nothing has come even close to following up the lead single (not easy to be fair) so I was unsure what to expect when diving into this two-tiered cake of indulgence. Having never gotten into Saturdays = Youth (snooze…) I was obviously impressed by “Midnight City” and then intrigued by Anthony Gonzalez’s statement of this album being more grand epic. But I obviously couldn’t expect a whole double album of “midnight City” level epic-ness, could I? Obviously not.

But that’s OK. While I will never endorse a double album in this day and age of music overload I have had no problems listening to all 22 songs in a row. Many tracks are loose and unstructured which helps them pass by as perfect background music. A handful of ambient jams punctuated by bigger tracks like “OK Pal” and it’s big cheesy 80s amazingness. I also strongly recommend “Raconte-Moi Une Histoire” as the best featuring vocals from a 4 year old hallucinogenic frog enthusiast girl. Awesome. If I owned Hurry Up, Were Dreaming in a physical form where its two parts were separate physical object I can’t say that I would always take the effort to put disc 2 in as it loses a lot of steam and the only standout is “OK Pal.” However, as the 2LP plays right through in my iTunes, I just carry on with whatever and let the music wash right over me.

[BATTLE] M83’s “Midnight City” mashed up with both Kanye West & Gotye?!

TBE Battle is a new series on The Burning Ear where I will occasionally put up two tracks that make for interesting comparison, debate, or whatever. Let the battle begin in the comments below! There is also a contest running to design the TBE Battle logo that will be used in each post. See below!

♫ The White Panda – Midnight Life (M83 & Kanye West)

♫ M83 & Gotye – Somebody At Midnight (Nimrodbz mashup)

So besides being two of the best songs of the year, M83’s “Midnight City” and Gotye’s amazing “Somebody That I Used To Know” are also two of the most remixed. Kaye West is also very popular, I hear. I am personally digging all the attention these jams are getting so now it’s time to see how they hold up as mashups? But these tracks raise some questions: Does adding Kanye West to any track just seem desperate or does add undeniable swagger? Is mashing up two of the years best songs sacrilegious or genius? Dou have a favorite? Or have the originals just been bent over a dirty kitchen table and ruined?

CONTEST: TBE Battle is going to be a semi-regular feature so it is going to need a logo or artwork or whatever so all you graphic designers get to work on something that can represent these Battles every time. Send it to me by next Monday (Oct 17) at midnight (EST) and let the battles begin!

Band links: The White Panda / Nimrodbz

Mashups: 9.21.2011 [Inspired Flight, DOSVEC, The White Panda and more…]

Its been a long time since I posted a Mashup only list, so I took a look at my itunes library and quickly realized that its time.  As you know at TBE we only publish the best.  Listen, download, pimp it out and rinse.  Repeat.
