[MP3] Lady Danville – “Operating”

i wish you could believe i meant it all for you to know

♫ Lady Danville – Operating

  • Who: Michael, Dan, & Matthew
  • What: Vocal piano pop, kinda like Local Natives, Ben Folds, Jack’s Mannequin
  • Where: Los Angeles + Facebook / Soundcloud / Amazon
  • When: The Operating EP is out February 14th. Aww…
  • Why: You may remember Lady Danville from their fantastic “Kids” cover from almost 3 years ago (below). They have been keeping us waiting since then but finally just returned in a big way with “Operating.” The vocals are huge and the hooks even bigger, the whole thing forcing me to sing along at top volumes. Their sound has evolved in remarkable ways, leaving few traces of the band we knew. I’ve heard the rest of the EP and it’s arena-sized sing alongs built for thousands. Gone are the days of twee-pop singer-songwriter soft-serve in place of a sound like Death Cab and Local Natives having a sleepover pillow-fight at the Hollywood Bowl. I guess a near death tour van wreck will do that to a band (see the for-reals album art). Now I’m not saying that they should get in more wrecks but if this is the music that comes out, then… well… just maybe.

Hip-Hop Digest 2 – 6.26.2010 [Kid Cudi, Kanye, Jay-Z, Big K.R.I.T., B.o.B., …) ]

Yeah, so it’s been a year since volume 1. Nobody said shit was organized around here.

So I just finished compiling and writing everything below and I had to ask myself why I was posting so much mediocre hip-hop when that is not even a genre I focus on here. I think that, however, is precisely the point.* I rarely post hip-hop tracks because they rarely grab me. So much of the big league hip-hop feels so lifeless. Anyway, read on, you’ll see what I mean. Or not. Anyway, here is a bunch of stuff that ranges in quality but all relates to hip-hop in some way.

TBE Digest 7 – 3.27.10 [MGMT, Foals, Born Ruffians, LCD Soundsystem, The Very Best, …]

If this is your first time to the Burning Ear then welcome to The TBE Digest, a place where I take a break from my usual gushing enthusiasm and cover some recent tracks that I am not so in love with but are still interesting/relevant/whatever. I’ve also started throwing covers in as well because, well, because I love covers. Dive in!

♫ MGMT – Flash Delirium / The first single from MGMT’s follow-up, Congratulations, which is streaming for free at their website. I haven’t heard it yet because frankly, “Flash Delirium” doesn’t really make me want to. It’s not that it’s even “not as good as “Kids”/”Time To Pretend”/”Electric Feel,” it’s just not very listenable.

TBE Exclusive! /// DJ Bouji and the ‘Just Quit’ Mix

djbouji_logodo you enjoy what you do? if not, don’t stop, don’t say shit

♫ Trackademicks vs. Sammy Bananas – Enjoy What You Do (Bouji Mash N Slash)

Just when you thought you weren’t going to be getting an exclusive mixtape to jam to all weekend, BAM, here it is! Surprises are fun as hell, but not nearly as fun as this buttery smooth funk-fest that L.A.’s own DJ Bouji has served up for us. I have seen this guy spin a few times and he always lights it up with his flow. His Just Quit mix is no different as he mixes genres, decades, and styles into one big party anthem. If you have been listening to his Mash N Slash of Sammy Bananas remix of Trackademicks “Enjoy What You Do” then you know what’s up. If you check out the tracklist after the jump you’ll see Miike Snow rolled into Peter Gabriel and Kings Of Leon paving the way for The Outfield. I love it. Download the whole thing below and have a kick ass weekend.

[CvrUpYrRmx] MGMT chills and Phoenix blows (In a good way)

mgmt_time_to_pretendBy now I am sure we are all a bit sick of MGMT and their face-invading hype train that steamed through 2008. Let’s not even get into the fact that they only have 3 good songs. Instead, let’s get into the fact that TBE has uniquely mellow covers of those 3 songs that breathe fresh life into each.

Knatterjak – Time To Pretend (MGMT Cover)

Knatterjak is Dan McGrath of Buffalo, NY and he has taken Oracular Spectacular’s album opener and turned it into a piece of haunting piano-pop that is more urgent and honest than MGMT ever pulled off. Their isn’t much on this guy’s MySpace besides a Womanizer cover and a couple demos. Let’s hope he doesn’t stop there.

Cleast Eatwood – Electric Feel (MGMT Cover)

As well as having the most-difficult-to-say band name ever (just try to not say Clint Eastwood when you read it) Cleast Eatwood are a fair pair of Swedes who make hushed and minimal pop with a tasty funk side. Their cover of Electric Feel is beautifully simple, nearly a cappella and stopped me in my tracks (key-strokes?) the first time I heard it. I highly recommend their MySpace for two tracks with a little more groove and a great hand-clappiness.

Lady Danville – Kids (MGMT Cover)

Don’t let the bare-bones video or lack of an mp3 fool you, Lady Danville means business when they introduce a Cajon and three-part harmony to this MGMT favorite. This one just gets under your skin and sets up shop like there was no crisis. These guys are always playing in the L.A. are and have some great originals as well. Check out their MySpace and go see them live.

Phoenix – 1901 (What Kind Of Breeze Do You Blow – E mix)

Those covers too mellow for your ADD sensibilities? Well I’ve got just the cure. If you haven’t already heard, the fab Frenchies of Phoenix have an album coming out in May and have already dropped a few singles. The first, “1901,” is available free at their website and is highly recommended. Here we have a remix of “1901” by one half of the Portland, Maine duo that goes by What Kind Of Breeze Do You Blow. I have heard of people passing wind that smelled like roses, but this dance breeze beats that hands down.
