[LP] KANYE WEST unleashed a MONSTER that should be maxing ALL OF THE LIGHTS on everybody’s equalizer

i did that time and spent that bread, i’m heading home, i’m almost there

♫ Kanye West – Monster (Ft. JAY-Z, Rick Ross, Nicki Minaj & Bon Iver)

I’ve never really liked Kanye West. By that I mean both his music and him as a person. Neither really appealed to me and all his stunts from ’09 only confirmed the feeling. There were certainly a lot of laughs had at his expense. Then something very interesting happened. He disappeared. No new music. No new scandals. Nothing. When news surfaced of his self-imposed exile in Hawaii where he was working on a new direction for both his music and his public persona, I was intrigued. When he started releasing a free track every week with his GOOD Friday project, I was impressed. However, when I heard first single “Power” I was disappointed. It seemed he wasn’t going to be bringing anything special to the table. Then I heard “Monster” (above) and was blown away. We all were, but for me it was a tangible moment. The moment when I realized that I may be underestimating Kanye West. Before long I was watching his stunning 35 minute mini-film and album-teaser Runaway (below) and soon after found myself addicted to the rousing “All Of The Lights” (below) and it’s fantastic arrangements. At this point I was officially stoked to hear the album.

[MP3] KANYE WEST unleashes a MONSTER in two senses of the word

pink wig, thick ass, give em whip lash, i think big, get cash, make ’em blink fast, now look at what you just saw, i think this is what you live for

♫ Kanye West – Monster (feat. Jay-Z, Rick Ross, Nicki Minaj & Bon Iver)

If this is your first introduction to this track then take an extra second to let it all sink in. Read that guest list again. Ummm… yeah. So Kanye spent some time in Hawaii on his next album and if you are hearing this beat then you know it was time well spent. He has also been unleashing all kinds of treats on us the past few weeks (including “Power” from 2 months back). So we all know that Kanye West is an odd dude, but he really let’s shit get crazy on this jam. Bon Iver is auto-tuned, Jay-Z is rapping about movie monsters and being addicted to love, and Ye himself makes questionable sexual innuendo involving Egyptian mummification rituals. As if all that wasn’t enough to make your head spin, Nicki Minaj then gets on the track and makes the big boys look like a bunch of schoolyard hacks. She absolutely destroys her verse (see lyric above), tearing up the beat with maniacal voices and what can only be imagined is a terrifying fire-eyed stare. I’m kind of afraid of her. In a good way. I guess… While we still have to wait a while for the full LP, Dark Twisted Fantasy, I’m not sure I even care. This may the only Kanye jam I need all year. In the meantime, Kanye is dropping more jams every Friday as a part of his Twitter’s weekly G.O.O.D. Fridays series.

} TBE Digest 6 – 2.24.10 [Gorillaz, Lil Wayne, Major Lazer, B.o.B., Broken Social Scene, …]

These Digest’s are tough to do because there are really only two emotions I feel while writing them: disappointment and bewilderment. The former for bands I love that are delivering sub-par baloney and the latter for bands other people love who are delivering sub-par baloney. These opinions are of course only my own and that’s why I persist with this series, because others may be really into these tracks and that is great. Different strokes, ya know. On the other hand, some may just be curious as to what different bands are up to these days. Read it for any reason you want, but know that I write it out of a simple desire to pass along the recent happenings in my musical world that I don’t feel are worthy of their own post. (There seemed to have been some confusion last time) Anyway, read on, trudge through, wade in, sally forth, whatever, just know that this edition is exceptionally long for whatever reason but there are some fun covers awaiting you at the end.
