The Best Albums of 2009 / The Top 15

This is it. The best of the best. As determined by me and in alphabetical-by-artist order. This list has been a labor of love and it is an honor to pay tribute to so many fantastic albums. With that said, don’t hesitate to lift your leg and leave your own mark in the comments. Or just track down the albums here that you don’t know and get down with a good set of headphone. I know these lists are self indulgent and often pointless but they are fun nonetheless. A big thank you to all the TBE readers who stick with me day after day and trudge through my ramblings. Ok, I’m out. Carry on! Read more

The 29 Best Remixes of 2009

I don’t know about you but 2009 was the year I fell in live with remixes. Starting TBE opened up my world to so many amazing reinterpretations of both great and not so great songs. Having always been more of a cover song guy this was new territory for me but I dove in headfirst and have been enjoying the ride so far. Good music is a personal thing and messing with great music is even more so. This is very much a subjective list and is based on nothing besides how much I love and respect the work done. Oh, and the numbering system is pretty much bullshit but I had to put them in some kind of order. Anyway, enjoy. I certainly have.

Remix Roundup Vol. 12 • 11-6-09

JerseyCarousel

Do I even need to write intros to these things anymore? I’m trying to keep these things leaner and meaner so let’s get on with the show!

♫ Prairie Cartel – Cracktown (Hey Champ Remix) / Umm, did you read who is on this track? Yeah, its fresh, but you knew that already. Bust out the strobe light and get freaky. [original post / more HC]

♫ Fool’s Gold – Surprise Hotel (Mad Decent’s Toadally Krossed Out Remix) / Toad croaking! Yes! Leave it up to Mad Decent (Diplo from Major Lazer, as far as I know) to come up with that stroke of brilliance. [original post]

♫ Major Lazer – Jump Up (Laza Beam Remix) / Speaking of the Major, how’s this jam for a “Jump Up” remix. Nothing mindblowing but it’s hard to mess up the banger-ocity on this track.  [original post]

♫ Mike Posner – Cooler Than Me (Gigamesh Remix – FINAL Version) / Mike Posner is back with a new mixtape full of his stoner hip-hop jams. There is an early version of this Gigamesh remix on it but ignore that business cause this is the version that you are supposed to be loving. If you are listening then you know why. [original post / more Gigamesh]

♫ Yeah Yeah Yeahs – Heads Will Roll (A-Trak Remix) / It’s A-Trak on the Yeah Yeah Yeahs, no surprise it’s a goodie. Better late than never.

♫ Phoenix – Armistice (YACHT Remix) / My favorite new remixers thrown down on this Phoenix jam (from their Wolfgang remix album.) If only they could make their own jams this listenable. [more Phoenix / YACHT]

♫ Passion Pit – Little Secrets (Hey Champ Remix) / Hey Champ put this one through the discofier for a jam worth of your best head bobbing, finger snapping, dance moves.  [more PP / HC]

♫ Just Jack – Doctor Doctor (Fred Falke Remix) / Fred Falke mellows this jam right out, turning it into one of those walking-home-at-twilight jams. [original post / more FF]

♫ Sean Bones – Dancehall (Bodega Girls Remix) / This one gets a bit repetitive but I’ve also found myself zoning out to it.  [original post / more BG]

♫ The Hood Internet – Just A Friendomania (Biz Markie vs Phoenix vs Classixx) / The Hood Internet are back again with this decade-mixing mashup that is inspired, to say the least. [more HI]

Miike Snow: The Band, The Facts, The Music

miikeI just got home from seeing Miike Snow for the 3rd time. As my mind recovers from their fantastic live show I figure we should go over the facts…

• Miike Snow is a band, not a man. They are made up of American Andrew Wyatt and Swedish producers/multi-instrumentalists Christian Karlsson & Pontus Winnberg (Bloodshy & Avant).

♫ Maroon 5 – Little Of Your Time (Bloodshy & Avant remix) ♡

• Andrew Wyatt, at 18, formed the Funkraphiliacs with Greg Kurstin (the “geggy” in Geggy Tah and Read more

VS.You know what sucks? Being underwear-bound at your laptop because your face-hair trimmer lost charge midway through it’s duty so you cant shower or go out. You know what is great? Remixes and beer! What happens when you put them all together?

The 20.9 Best Songs of 2009… So Far / Jan.-June

Art by Odili Donald Odita

Art by Odili Donald Odita

How freaking crazy is it that 2009 is already halfway over? What a crazy year so far, in so many ways, the least of which is all of the fantastic, surprising, and sometimes disappointing music that has come our way. TBE will be 5 months old in a week and we have been chronicling most of the year’s jams. Here are my top 20.9. I guarantee you wont agree with all of them but doesn’t that just make our friendship that much more deep and meaningful? Just so we are clear how I arrived at this particular order, I’ve selected my favorites from my top listens each month and then ordered them purely by total play count. I know that’s confusing but whatever, the list is after the jump.

TBE Exclusive! DJ be and the Slow Burn Summer mix

Big moves are being made over at TBE HQ and one of them is this, The Slow Burn Summer mix, our first DJ mix by local favorite “DJ be” who was kind enough to blend up a fresh-to-death 60 minutes of straight fire. Put in on your iPod, cell phone, CDR, or whatever and then slip on your shimmy-shoes.

The mix is a single file because this thing is too fresh to be skipping tracks. I have, however, embedded a timecoded track-list in the lyrics section of the ID3 tag so you can at least know where you are at (or jump to your favorite part, if necessary). Let me know what you think of this method.
