[LP] Patrick Wolf – LUPERCALIA (w/ “The Falcons”)

but you were down and out of luck, now side by side, we’re looking up. finally.

♫ Patrick Wolf – The Falcons

I have this theory about great film artists and their declining wise career choices coinciding with children (See: George Lucas, Eddie Murphy, Kevin Smith, etc). In the case of Patrick Wolf he is neither a filmmaker nor does he have any children but the big shift in his life leading up to Lupercalia was love, happiness, and stability. Potential creativity killers. Luckily for us (and him, I guess) quite the opposite seems to be true. Nestled comfortably in his new skin, Wolf has crafted an album so whole and radiant that his energy is palpable. Album Opener “The City” sits near the top of the Best Songs of the the year list with it’s enormous hooks and viral infectiousness. Album closer “The Falcons” rides a white tiger of soaring strings and dancing melodies that leave me reaching for repeat each time it ends. Even professional sour-pusses Hurts couldn’t really bring Wolf down on his other single “Time Of My Life” (below).

As for the rest of Lupercalia, it is just a pure joy to listen to these solid jams and feel the goodwill and talent of one of UK’s finest.

[MIX] SPRING, MY BELLE! /// A TBE Mix For Exploding Into Springtime

After months of gazing out the window and cursing the wintery grey sky we have finally been blessed with the warmth that thaws the bones in a most electric way. This is a mix for celebrating that moment that you open your front door and are slammed with the blinding sunshine that sparks your insides and makes you want to skip all the way to wherever you are going. I’ve kept in lean and mean at under an hour so add your own tracks as needed. Enjoy with reckless abandon. Read more

[MP3] PATRICK WOLF has THE jam for unleashing sunshine on this freezing CITY

darling don’t look so sad, it’s about that day we kissed, up by niagara falls, it’s about the keys, the keys, the keys, to my heart you hold

♫ Patrick Wolf – The City

It’s been a while since we heard from the reigning prince of gloom-glam and boy have things changed. I don’t know Wolf’s music too well but even I can tell that he is in a better mood. (The Independent put out a great piece today for those of you interested in Wolf’s recent love and impending marriage.) “The City” was recently recommended as an addition to our collaborative mixtape of super-fun-time-upbeat-sunshine jams and it fits perfectly. Wolf drops all pretense and get’s down to business, the business of being in love. The business of putting it all on the table and being unabashedly smitten. It’s a vulnerable place to be and a big shift for a guy who has battled so many personal demons. That captivating voice of his is layered over epic horns, crisp fingersnaps, battle drums, and piano that sends shivers down my spine. And how oddly perfect is that almost hip-hop-esque distorted baritone vocal chant?

As if the music alone wasn’t enough to become my springtime anthem, Wolf has gone and made one of the best videos (below) I can imagine accompanying such a jam. Not only is it set on Santa Monica Beach (holler!) and features a smiling Wolf, but there is also a parrot, piano playing on the sand, general beach-y giddiness, perfectly timed pigeon flying, and one very lucky fedora. This is exactly how you make a brilliant video on a budget. Watch it. Love it. Dream about it.

Lupercalia is out in May. Grab another taste, the upbeat and soaring strings-and-drums in “Time Of My Life.” Read more

Patrick Wolf pulls us through Hard Times

patrick_wolf-bachelor

show me some revolution this battle will be won

Patrick Wolf – Hard Times

Ok, after yesterday’s 17 years late discovery of Comet Gain, I am feeling a little behind the curve admitting I had never heard of Patrick Wolf until recently. The dude has over 12 million listens on Last.fm and three 8.2+ Pitchfork rated albums. Holy Jeezo. The 25 year Londoner plays like every instrument under the sun and as far as I’ve heard, plays them well. “Hard Times” is the perfect “We can do it!” rallying cry for our era of economic shit-storms and pig disease. Blast it tonight as your pre-game anthem! His new album The Bachelor comes out June 1 and if you like what you her you can even invest in his future releases. Probably a smarter investment than pork futures.
