TBE Digest 12 – 8.25.10 [Civil Civic, The Knocks, Wale, Pete Yorn, Weezer, Passion Pit, …]

A month away from high speed internet will do a lot to a man so while I readjust myself to city living let me drop this round of Digest jams on you. Some of them aren’t the most timely but thankfully you understand. Some great tracks in here! Nice to see new freshness from Civil Civic, Young Empires, and The Knocks. Plus Passion Pit cover Smashing Pumpkins? Hot dog! Rock on and drop a thought in the comments!

For more jams or by any of these artists use the ‘tags’ links at the bottom of the post!

Pete Yorn & Scarlett Johansson make music that is surprisingly Relatorable

♫ Pete Yorn & Scarlett Johansson – Relator ☹

I have just never been down with Scarlett Johansson. Whatever vibe she has going on with her acting just rubs me the wrong way and I have never found her “hott.” I also never listened to her Tom Waits cover album. Oops. On the flipside, I have always kinda dug my boy Pete Yorn. I never really followed him after his debut, musicforthemorningafter, but “For Nancy” was my straight jam back then and I recently re-discovered the haunting magic of “Lose You.” What a sort of left-field surprise to hear this fantastic jam off of their forthcoming collaboration Break Up. Pete’s guitar kills it in a perfect boogie-with-your-baby kind of way and Scarlett’s vocals are sweet and inoffensive. The album was inspired by Serge Gainsbourg’s recordings with Brigitte Bardot from the 60’s and was recorded waaay back in 2006. Scarlett was less of a mega star back then and perhaps that’s why she sounds tolerable. Interesting. The only other track I have heard is called “Shampoo” and it is significantly less exciting. Is this fact, coupled with the lack of anything but “Relator” on their MySpace cause to worry that the album will blow? I guess we will have to wait until September 15th to find out.
