Remix Roundup Vol. 71 – THE RETURN! PART 1

I know, I know. It’s been too long. The Remix Roundups are back and I guarantee they will be more fun then ever. Here is Vol 71 for your weekend enjoyment and I already have Vol 72 coming together. Both of them are a kind of “house cleaning” of all the amazing remixes of 2013 that never got Roundup love. They will be followed by the Best Remixes of 2013 post. Thats a lot of music. Drink a lot of water and don’t forget to stretch.

Oh, and there are a few jams included in the ZIP below that aren’t on Soundcloud anymore so make sure you grab that…

[REMIX] Phoenix – “Lisztomania” (Bomb Coltrane remix)

it’s not hard to let it go from a mess to the masses

♫ Phoenix – Lisztomania (Bomb Coltrane Remix)

Nobody asked for another Phoenix remix but with the void in our lives created by the lack of new material from those Frenchies I’ll take this chopped and funked “Lisztomania” and crank it up.

[REMIX] Stal – We Are Two (Alcala Remix) + College & Electric Youth vs Phoenix – A Real Hero vs Fences (Alcala Mash-Up)

too different to converge, too young to fix this unreal mess

♫ Stal – We Are Two (Alcala Remix)

Dan Alcala was responsible for one of last year’s best remixes and luckily he is still at it. His mix of “We Are Two” is a slow build body mover with heart. The mashup below gets even more chill, riding the groove of everyone’s favorite Drive soundtrack jam and laying on a bit of the unfortunately M.I.A. Frenchmen. Get on his latest hour+ mix of jams inspired by the Drive soundtrack.

♫ College & Electric Youth vs Phoenix – A Real Hero vs Fences (Alcala Mash-Up)

[MP3] Peachcake – “You Matter”

i’ve been waiting for your voice to get me out of this town

♫ Peachcake – You Matter

LETS DO A SUMMER MIXTAPE with [RAC, Adventure Club, Goldroom, Viceroy, DWNTWN, Ghost Beach, Cry Wolf and Lights & Music]

When I first started the blog feature on Lights & Music last month, this mixtape was the first idea that I put into action.  Wikipedia, in-short describes mixtapes as usually reflecting the musical tastes of its compiler, a conceptual mix of songs linked by a theme or mood tailored to the tape’s intended recipient.  Yeah sure, we’ve all made mixtapes before.  But, what happens when you get a bunch of artists and bloggers to make a mixtape with the intended recipient being you?  Thats what I wanted to find out.  The concept is simple, yet I hadn’t really seen it anywhere else.

Everyone was given two selections.  They could either choose two tracks defining their summer so far in 2012 or one new and one all-time summer favorite.  Sounds simple enough in theory, but narrowing down your favorite jams to fit that criteria was tough.  That said, this was a fun project and I intend on making this a annual event.

Without further ado, please enjoy and share with others. Read more

[COVER] Birdy – “1901” (Phoenix cover)

♫ Birdy – 1901 (Phoenix Cover)

  • Who: A 15 year old girl. I know, right?
  • What: Girl-with-pipes-singer-songwriter, like young Ellie Goulding, Florence & The Machine.
  • Where: UK + Facebook / Soundcloud / Amazon
  • When: Her self-titled album of covers (+1 original) is only out in the UK.
  • Why: More rewards reaped from the comments of the Best Covers post! Apparently I totally missed the phenomenon of Birdy that happened last year as the girl covered a who’s-who of TBE favorites like The xx, The Postal Service, Bon Iver, and The Naked & Famous. Thank goodness I’m caught up to speed because while pared down covers of modern classics are always good for a listen or two, this delicate and emotional re-imagining of “1901” gives the original a run for its money. Birdy folds herself into the song while making it her own, keeping instrumentation perfectly sparse but not getting too empty. The slowed beat and her little voice give the song a weight that the original (nor its myriad remixes) ever achieved. Well done. I just wonder if she can emerge as well formed in her own songs.
