The Best Remixes of 2010… Since Then (July-Dec.)

Damn. Another great year for remixes. Whether bringing the dance heat, adding a different texture, or completely flipping a song over, we were hit with all kinds of solid sonic reworkings. No surprise to see some of TBE’s heavy hitters like RAC, Don Diablo, Bloodshy & Avant, and The Soundmen and a warm welcome to some new names that nailed their mixes to my repeat button. All of the top 6, as well as a few others, are remixes of tracks that never really caught me in their original form but now have become some of my favorite jams of the year. A whole new life was infused into them and isn’t that what a great remix is all about?

[LP] RA RA RIOT’s latest is TOO mellow and not DRAMATIC enough

you know i couldn’t live here that way, you’ve said it before

♫ Ra Ra Riot – Too Dramatic

So Ra Ra Riot’s sophomore LP The Orchard came out last month and if you were a fan of their debut then you have almost certainly heard this one. I am a huge fan of their debut and so perhaps expectations were a bit high for The Orchard. Six times through the album and I still enjoy it every time but it just doesn’t blow me away like Rhumb Line did. The songs are a bit more tame and don’t showcase as much of their fun and funky energy. Lead single “Boy” is the high-energy point at track 2 and the rest of the coasts to a closet. Still with some juice behind it, “Too Dramatic,” and it’s rubbery bass-line and sharp string section, is my new high-speed driving jam. This will by reason for coming back to the disc in hopes it leaves a lasting impression. Anyone else kinda disappointed by The Orchard?

Look forward to more from them as I slowly relinquish my iron grip on this site’s content and open us all up to more sweet sweet jams! In the meantime I have a fresh batch of remixes from my own satchel of fun to share with you all! Quick, get to it, it’s Saturday!

♫ Clare Maguire – The Strangest Thing (Bloodshy & Avant Version) / Bloodshy & Avant continue their time honored tradition of making sounds I love. Spooky in the best way.

RA RA RIOT are making this BOY happy

when i have once or twice thought i lived my life

♫ Ra Ra Riot – Boy

I’ll never forget when I first heard Ra Ra Riot. Their vibe was so exuberant and emotive and perfectly soundtracked that California summer. That album ended up being one of my favorites of 2008 and I’ve been patiently awaiting a follow-up ever since. “Boy” is the first taste of new Ra Ra and so far I’m pretty stoked. That twitchy bassline and bouncy percussion are just about perfect in my book. “oooh ooohs” on top of that and you’ve got yourself a jam! It’s not as grand or sweeping as some of The Rhumb Line‘s best but it’s still unmistakably Ra Ra Riot. New album, The Orchard, came out yesterday and although I’ve heard good things I haven’t dove into it yet. I want to digest this one like a great meal. I’ll check back soon with thoughts on the digestion process.

Discovery rock the Osaka Loop Line

Discovery – Osaka Loop Line

Who knows what an “Osaka Loop Line” is but it certainly makes for a great song. It starts slow and glitchy, and ends up fast and glitchier, kinda like riding some 121 year old rail-road or something. I dunno, I’m just not feeling my analogies today. It’s kinda no surprise that the song is so good, Discovery is a collaboration between Vampire Weekend’s Rostam Batmanglij and Ra Ra Riot’s Wes Miles, two bands that rocked my 2008. Here’s to Discovery rocking our 2009.

What Up '08? (part 1)

2008 was a great year for music, blah blah blah. In fact it was a fucking santoGOLDEN year for music but you probably read some “Best Of 2008” lists like Forever Ago in some other Day & Age. In fact, you probably still remember when we got our Sex set On Fire, someone Lykked our Li, Hercules had a Love Affair, and it all happened over one big Circus of a Vampire Weekend. Well there were at least A Million crazy good songs/albums but I dont want to just Feed The Animals and Cut and Copy what some other blog said. You dont need that kind of Heartbreak on your new favorite music blog. As the Management of this here music blog I want to talk about my favorites, the ones that you may not have heard too much about but that certainly called out to me and said “Dear Science…” oh wait, I mean “DearBrandon, love us like you love chips!” And I did. Hard.
