Just the other day I was wondering why “Thrift Shop” didn’t have any remixes? Recent mega crossover hit “Somebody That I Used To Know” has a gazillion! Then, poof! This lands in my inbox. It’s a shredding dubby groover that boils things down before Transformer-ing them back up. And it came with a note on why there were no other “Thrift Shop” remixes: the stems were under lock and key. Epoch Rises were not to be deterred. Apparently made up of two wizards, they constructed their own stems using future-tech audio filtering techniques and built this jam from there. But enough of that, time to get those thrift threads durrrrty! Also, get into this goofy and highly destructive video remix they put together.

2012 was a fantastic year for party songs. It seems that music is having more fun than ever and I couldn’t be happier to share it with you all. We’ve all had some epic parties set to some epic party playlists and tonight is the night to top them all. (Or not, really. Nothing worse than NYE pressure.) So take a trip down the Read more

y’all can’t stop me, i go hard like i’ve got an 808 in my heart beat, and i’m eating at the beat, like you gave a little speed to a great white shark on shark week
If you’ve caught any of our posts on Macklemore & RyanLewis then you know the kind of freshness these two are bringing to the rap game. Macklemore ‘s intensely personal, honest, and and often funny storytelling. Ryan Lewis’ impeccable and unique production. It’s really quite remarkable. Independent since day one, they’ve obviously been courted by major labels but as “Jimmy Iovine” lays out, the current state of affairs in that world is dismal for the artist. The duo blazed on alone and The Heist is their opus. But don’t let the commercial success on the backs of a legion of loyal fans fool you. This is a fantastic album. If you never thought you liked hip-hop you will still find something here to love. Macklemore brilliantly balances his signature heavy topic songwriting with goofball party songs that keep the album from getting bogged down in it’s own seriousness. Both “Same Love” and “Thrift Shop” are shaping up to be top songs of the year but for such different reasons. But one common thread. Two really. Macklemore & Ryan Lewis.

i’ll wear your grand dad’s clothes, i look incredible, i’m in this big ass coat from that thrift shop down the road
Macklemore is awesome for a lot of reasons, but one of the tops one is his ability to seamless go from advocating gay marriage to advocating thrift store shopping, and come off sincere on both fronts. Plus, Ryan Lewis has outdone himself on the production for “Thrift Shop.” A bonafide hip-hop banger. Aaaannnd the video is legendary. We need more like it. Now thank goodness winter is coming and we can all layer up on thrift store gold!
Macklemore X Ryan Lewis’ debut LP The Heist is out today and I just dropped $11.99 for the deluxe edition of it on iTunes. Don’t sleep.

Why: Macklemore & Ryan Lewis have been pushingagainst the tropes of mainstream hip-hop for a while but “Same Love” may be their strongest and most beautiful piece to date. The obvious implications of what the song’s pro-gay-marriage stance means in the excessively homophobic hip-hop community aside, the song just nails it. Macklemore’s storytelling is impeccable and Lambert’s guest vocals add a great contrast to his rasp. As well as a tender feminine touch to a song that is just about love. Mmmm. Just feel it. Times, they are a changing. Stay honest to yourself and speak up for what you believe in. No one else can do it for you.

but if that’s what i believe in, and the reason that i rap, uncle sam is my pimp when he puts me on the track
The best thing about having contributors to this little blog I started is being turned onto stuff from them. It was an early post from Joel at tipped to Macklemore & Ryan Lewis, and eventually to one of the best remixes of 2010Â (and it’s heavy video). Since then I have kept an eye on Macklemore, tracking his growing success and continued tackling of real life stories in his rhymes. I like his honesty and his willingness to admit his faults and talk about heavy shit he has been through.
New jam “Make The Money”‘s message of integrity above all could easily seem a little heavy-handed but something about Macklemore’s attitude makes me fine with it. Even recent super-cheesy anti-consumerism anthem “Wings” is the good kind of cheesy. But what I like even more than Macklemore’s honesty, is that he knows how to have fun too. Unlike a lot of preachy rappers, he doesn’t stick to one heavy handed note. Thanks to Dave at Fairly Coherent, I saw this perfect example of Macklmore leting his “hair” down in his latest video for “And We Danced” (below). Capital F-U-N. I bet this guy’s live shows go off the chain. Good thing he is on tour now!

Damn. Another great year for remixes. Whether bringing the dance heat, adding a different texture, or completely flipping a song over, we were hit with all kinds of solid sonic reworkings. No surprise to see some of TBE’s heavy hitters like RAC, Don Diablo, Bloodshy & Avant, and The Soundmen and a warm welcome to some new names that nailed their mixes to my repeat button. All of the top 6, as well as a few others, are remixes of tracks that never really caught me in their original form but now have become some of my favorite jams of the year. A whole new life was infused into them and isn’t that what a great remix is all about?

Loosen those belts because this Digest is quite the spread and you’re gonna need some breathing room to get through all 18 of these morsels. Bear with me because, save for the last two, this is all great stuff and there are a few “Best ___ of 2010” shoe-ins lurking below. Once again, the jams are broken into “courses” for your convenience. Enjoy!
