A month away from high speed internet will do a lot to a man so while I readjust myself to city living let me drop this round of Digest jams on you. Some of them aren’t the most timely but thankfully you understand. Some great tracks in here! Nice to see new freshness from Civil Civic, Young Empires, and The Knocks. Plus Passion Pit cover Smashing Pumpkins? Hot dog! Rock on and drop a thought in the comments!

ELLIE GOULDING has got me STARRY EYED over her cover of BLACK & GOLD

starryeyed

you look at me, it’s like you hit me with lightning

♫ Ellie Goulding – Starry Eyed

I dare you to tell me that the voice you hear in this song evokes the same face you see in this photo. But that’s exactly it! The track has merit, sure, but there is a gloss to it that I tend to slide off of. “Starry Eyed” has ben bouncing around my iTunes for months but was never posted because I never felt certain that Ellie was worth the notice. Then I heard her cover of Sam Sparro’s “Black & Gold” and knew there was something here. With a little research I think I might even like her new single “Under The Sheets” even more than “Starry Eyed.” It has a bit more gravitas. But whatever you think of her solo stuff, she is clearly working on some real shit here. Besides “Black 7 Gold” she has recorded an amazing cover of Bon Iver’s “The Wolves (Act I and II)” as well as Passion Pit’s “Sleepyhead.” Get over your post-Sleepyhead self and check them bot out at PMA because they are serious business. Her fantastic producer Starsmith is due credit as well. I’m hoping for big things from Ellie because i’ve definitely got my eye on this one.

Basement Jaxx make me wet with Raindrops

jaxx-raindrops

just like a waterfall straight through the heart of me

Basement Jaxx – Raindrops

Whaaaa! New Basement Jaxx!!! If you are all like “Why you flippin? Their last few albums weren’t even any good, bro.” Then you haven’t hit that little play button yet. Push it! The guys that brought us “Red Alert,” “Romeo,” “Take Me Back To Your House,” and awesome videos like this, are back with beautiful artwork to a beautiful song. “Raindrops” doesn’t even have their usual steez of guest vocals, that’s Felix Buxton (one of the Jaxx) and some vocal processor spitting crystal beauty at us. The epicness of this song is undeniable Jaxx but it does seem like they are changing up their game big time. Their MySpace has been stripped of all songs but “Raindrops” and the album field of the MP3 is labeled “The Return Of Basement Jaxx.” Snap! The actual name of their forthcoming LP is Scars and it supposedly features vocals from Santigold, Sam Sparro, Lightspeed Champion, Grace Jones, Yoko Ono, Yo! Majesty, and Cyndi Lauper. Fresh ta def.

Beautiful Small Machines & Robots In Love

beautiful-small-machines-the-robots-in-love-ep

when push comes to shove we were only robots in love

I figure you cats might need an extra beat to digest Part 1 of  What Up ’08? so I’m gonna hold off on Part 2 until Monday. Grab it then, put the 2 parts on 1 CD and let it rock your week until the wheels fall off.

Until then…there is Valentines Day! You know the drill, either you are disgustingly happy or disgustingly sad. EIther way, get over yourself and your need to be validated by others and grab this head-bobber by Beautiful Small Machine. Upon first listen I was hooked by the sweet vocals and bouncy drums (and photos of the mega-hot singer Bree on their MySpace) but with further listens I discovered this to be the most poignant love song I’ve heard in a long time. Take a moment to really listen and I think you will find it descirbes a relationship around you (If not ALL of them around me). If you dont recogize who its about then its probably you. Happy Valentines Day!

Beautiful Small Machines – Robots In Love (Big ups to Silence-Killer for this one)

On a side note, I helped produce a Valentines Day CD that is available in stores here in Poland. Its a co-production between TVN Lingua (my work), Universal records, and a Polish internet dating service. The 2-disc set has a mellow/dance split that reads better when you replace “dance” with “euro-spazz-trance.” Either way, check out the track list and some samples afer the jump.
