  • Why: She got her start over 2 years ago with the bleepy-bloopy Boodshy & Avant produced groover “One” and a chart topping “Animal” cover but now this major label project has found her strongest permutation yet. “Everything is Embarassing” is co-produced by Blood Orange’s Devontes Hynes and super producer (& former Hippo) Ariel Rechtshaid and you can hear the former’s influence coming is strong while the latter’s is only evident in the fact that its a damn jam. Who ever said that too many cooks kill the stew?

Happy 2nd Birthday to The Burning Ear!

Holy cow. It was exactly 2 years ago (!?) today that I launched The Burning Ear from the butt wedge of my old couch. The Best Cover Songs of 2010

This year saw quite a few bands taking cracks at covers of songs both new and old. From bare bones beautiful interpretations of The Smashing Pumpkins, Miike Snow, and LCD Soundsystem to full on genre flipping of Jay-Z and Justice, to a different blend of herbs and spices on Band of Horses and Beyoncé, it’s clear that there is no magic formula to a great cover. These are the one’s I loved the most this past year. You?

Sky Ferreira’s big solo single is a ar cry from her tender-to-tears cover of Miike Snow’s “Animal” but it’s still got a certain magic that may or may not be the direct result of that band’s production duo; Bloodshy & Avant. OK, who are we kidding, it’s definitely Bloodshy & Avant working the magic here and if it wasn’t for those signature glitchy bleeps and bloops I wouldn’t be spending these precious minutes on a Friday night squeezing this post out. Speaking of which, it’s FRIDAY, why am I thinking this much about anything at all! Time to just crank it up and get funky. You too Sky, keep your chip up and your dance moves fresh. At a wee 18 years you have plenty of time to win our respect.
