Why: Don’t look now but the 3 people making the Joy Formidable sized guitar jam you are hearing are quite quiet and timid. They slipped silently on stage last week at the TBE SXSW shows and if it wasn’t for the wall of sound coming from their instruments you wouldn’t even know they were there. But enough about the great live set you missed, you can still grab their Chris Walla (from Death Cab) produced 2nd LP Threads and have your own pajama rock-out at home. Catch a review of their show here and an interview here.

Why: As a last minute addition to our SXSW lineup Ambassadors didn’t get a post in here before their set but its worth circling back to this tense slow rocker that builds to handclap heaven. These guys brought the rock Saturday night and have a few other great jams up on their Bandcamp. Some even free! I recommend “Weight/Lightness” for a bit of boozy big-city heartbreak.
Why: The Irish have long been known for getting rowdy but not often enough to we get that energy funneled into guitar shredding pit-rock like this! The Minutes rip fast, quick, and catchy on “Secret History” but it’s “Black Keys” that I’ll be going mental for when they play our SXSW party on Wednesday. That is also when I’ll be buying their full LP Mercata so I can rock solid all year long.
