[MP3] Now Now – “Thread”

a hint of light in the dark but only enough to keep from giving up

♫ Now Now – Thread

  • Who: Cacie, Jess, & Brad.
  • What: Tough n’ tender indie pop, like Tegan & Sara, Death Cab for Cutie, Slow Club.
  • Where: Minneapolis, MN + Facebook / Amazon
  • When: 2nd LP Threads is out now.
  • Why: Don’t look now but the 3 people making the Joy Formidable sized guitar jam you are hearing are quite quiet and timid. They slipped silently on stage last week at the TBE SXSW shows and if it wasn’t for the wall of sound coming from their instruments you wouldn’t even know they were there. But enough about the great live set you missed, you can still grab their Chris Walla (from Death Cab) produced 2nd LP Threads and have your own pajama rock-out at home. Catch a review of their show here and an interview here.

[MP3] Ambassadors – “Unconsolable”

i hope we stay thick as thieves, butter and bread, pillars of colonial homes

♫ Ambassadors – Unconsolable

  • Who: Brothers Sam & Casey + Noah and Adam
  • What: “Soul infected indie rock”, like Cold War Kids, White Rabbits
  • Where: Brooklyn, NY + Facebook / Bandcamp / Amazon
  • When: 8-track EP Litost is out now.
  • Why: As a last minute addition to our SXSW lineup Ambassadors didn’t get a post in here before their set but its worth circling back to this tense slow rocker that builds to handclap heaven. These guys brought the rock Saturday night and have a few other great jams up on their Bandcamp. Some even free! I recommend “Weight/Lightness” for a bit of boozy big-city heartbreak.

[MP3/STREAM] The Minutes – “Secret History” & “Black Keys”

you do your own town and i’ll do mine

♫ The Minutes – Secret History

  • Who: Mark, Tom, & Shane
  • What: Raucous garage/blues rock, like J. Roddy Walston, Mona, The Black Keys
  • Where: Dublin, Ireland + Facebook / Soundcloud / Bandcamp / Amazon
  • When: Debut album Marcata is out now.
  • Why: The Irish have long been known for getting rowdy but not often enough to we get that energy funneled into guitar shredding pit-rock like this! The Minutes rip fast, quick, and catchy on “Secret History” but it’s “Black Keys” that I’ll be going mental for when they play our SXSW party on Wednesday. That is also when I’ll be buying their full LP Mercata so I can rock solid all year long.

[REMIX] Tyga – “Rack City” (DWNTWN REMIX)

if you ain’t got no ass bitch wear a poncho

♫ Tyga – Rack City (DWNTWN REMIX)

One of Los Angeles’s finest up and comers just popped out another stellar remix, this time taking Tyga’s stripper anthem and grinding a little beat on it. Pop it if you got it.

Catch DWNTWN at The Burning Ear’s showcase at The Firehouse during SXSW in March!
