Brandon’s TBE Digest 29 – [10.11.2011] New Jams, Remixes, & Covers!

Artwork by Jacob Youngblood Ziegler

Brandon’s TBE Digest is a place where I gather up all the recent jams that are worth a listen (or 10) but don’t necessarily need their own post. Here you will find new tracks by known bands, remixes, covers, and even mashups if they are interesting. My favorites of the lot are in bold.

It’s a big one folks. Proceed with caution (and good speakers). Also note the new Digest logo that will be here to stay. Enough of that little weird cartoon guy we had for so long, amiright!? Cheers to new beginnings! And new jams!

Remix Roundup Vol. 51 – 9.13.2011 [Madonna, Dada Life, Matt & Kim, The Drums, and more…]

Welcome back TBE vets and greetings, bonjour, buenas noches, shalom, what’s happening TBE infants.  First, we’re grateful for everyone of you.  Second, we have a slight change in the Remix Roundup methodology I wanted to let you know about.

Previously, we had been working from a Friday bi-weekly format that many of you have come very a accustomed to.  But, as awesome as those Friday roundups were, keeping to that schedule sometimes proved to be quite difficult.  Not to mention resulting in many Roundups being far too large.   I decided to clean things up.

The New Philosophy is simple… I will post a new R-R everytime I have 15 new TBE worthy remixes.  There is no set schedule.  Does this mean I will post less often???  No, actually its quite the contrary.  If you want to stay up to date on all remix roundups, then follow me on twitter @JoelAlbers

Anyway, enough with the serious talk…  Remix Roundup Vol. 51 is about to blow your head off.  PUSSSHH PLAY.

♫ Madonna – Like A Prayer (Viceroy + Alkamyme Remix) / I’ve been looking for a decade for a quality remix of this song.  The search is over.

♫ Dada Life – Fight Club Is Closed (Religion Remix) / This one puts a huge mischievous grin on my face.  This is what I call a 4-On-The-Floor BANGER.  This may just coast its way into that all important Top 50 remixes of 2011 list.

[STREAM] The Drums – “Money”

you hit me yesterday because i made you cry so before we die i’d like to do something nice

New track from The Drums is awesome in all the ways that I was worried The Drums wouldn’t be anymore. They are wisely keeping it upbeat and fun while leaving the misery to the lyrics and not the music. Being a broke bastard was never this much fun. At least surfing is pretty much free!

The Drums new album Portamento is coming September 12th.

Brandon’s TBE Digest 15 – 11.10.2010 [Kanye West, Cold War Kids, Two Door Cinema Club, The Drums, Twin Shadow, Mark Ronson, etc]

Loosen those belts because this Digest is quite the spread and you’re gonna need some breathing room to get through all 18 of these morsels. Bear with me because, save for the last two, this is all great stuff and there are a few “Best ___ of 2010” shoe-ins lurking below. Once again, the jams are broken into “courses” for your convenience. Enjoy!

NEW ORIGINAL FRESHNESS

♫ Kanye West – All of the Lights (Ft. John Legend, The-Dream, Ryan Leslie, Tony Williams, Charlie Wilson, Elly Jackson, Alicia Keys, Fergie, Kid Cudi, Rihanna, & Elton John) – Besides all the gems at in Kanye’s GOOD Fridays free mp3 program, this guest-crazy jam from the forthcoming My Beautiful Dark Twisted Fantasy also dropped recently. It’s a memorable moment from the “Runaway” film and sure to be a centerpiece of the album.

♫ Trophy Wife – Microlite (acoustic) / Trophy Wife’s latest single “Microlite” may be even better than “Take This Night” and it definitely has a Read more

TBE’s Summer In Hi-Fi /// A Summer Mix, Vol 1

Ahhh, summer… If mine wasn’t currently operating as the antithesis of all this relaxing and peaceful I would definitely have had this mix up sooner, but alas, it wasn’t to be. However, seeing as tomorrow I head out on an 18 day family vacation (never too old!) it’s time to get these summer jams pumping! Today is Volume 1 and the next two Fridays will bring Volumes 2 & 3 respectively. I’ve never understood the concept of an all-encompassing summer mix because like all things amazing, summer has many facets and is home to many moods. So I’ve gone and put together 3 full mixes of summer-themed goodness, each with it’s own sun-soaked vibe. Seeing as how this year’s summer was perhaps the most highly anticipated (and deserved) clump of warm days in Polish history I decided to kick off this summer mix series with a big rousing 54-minute high-five to the summer sun. Summer In Hi-Fi is a mix that celebrates summer with all the energy and eagerness of that first day at the beach or pool. Take a gander at the track list after the jump and download the whole mix right below!

Remix Roundup Vol. 24 – 7.21.10 [Sleigh Bells, Don Diablo, Sia, The Drums, Brahms, The National, Local Natives,…]

Did someone say remixes!?!? Oh, no, that was just the sound of my sweat hitting the laptop, which along with the clackity of the keyboard, sounded like morse code for “roundup.” Shit, I may be losing it in this heat…

♫ Sleigh Bells – A/B Machines (French Horn Rebellion Remix) / I get a little bummed out every time I hear this but that is only cause French Horn Rebellion will be opening for Cut Copy this Saturday IN WARSAW but I will be on vacation. How’s that for shitty luck? Well, my trip is going to be pretty epic in it’s own right, a lot like this remix, so I can’t really complain. Now get dirty with this glitch-heavy take on the Sleigh Bells shredder!

THE DRUMS sing a lot about FOREVER AND and whatEVER but that’s cool cause they have some jams. AMEN.

♫ The Drums – Let’s Go Surfing (previously posted)

If you don’t know The Drums yet then you should. Well, kinda. You see, here is the thing, they have a jam called “Let’s Go Surfing” (below) that was hands down one of last year’s best. Their live show is also epically fun and weird. (I caught them last summer and meant to write about but then life happened. Sorry.) But, as much as I love “Let’s Go Surfing,” the truth is that nothing else they have produced is as epic as that track and probably never will be. In fact, their sound is wholly different from that power jam. Listen to any other Drums song and you’ll hear the twee-50s-beach-rock that I’m talking about. Anyway, enough rambling. Last year’s Summertime! EP didn’t bowl me over but now they’ve released a self-titled full length that is much more robust and listenable. I’m not in love with the album but it has it’s moments, as well as it’s time and place. “Forever And Ever Amen” is one of those highlights that showcases The Drums at their most kinetic and anthemic, which is how I like ’em best. It’s a love young for youth and naiveté in the summer. An anthem to sing to your sweetie as you finger-snap your way to the diner for a malted.

The 29 Best Remixes of 2009

I don’t know about you but 2009 was the year I fell in live with remixes. Starting TBE opened up my world to so many amazing reinterpretations of both great and not so great songs. Having always been more of a cover song guy this was new territory for me but I dove in headfirst and have been enjoying the ride so far. Good music is a personal thing and messing with great music is even more so. This is very much a subjective list and is based on nothing besides how much I love and respect the work done. Oh, and the numbering system is pretty much bullshit but I had to put them in some kind of order. Anyway, enjoy. I certainly have.
