[#60-41] The 60 Best Underrated Songs of the Past 6 Years (3000 Posts)

The moment I hit the “publish” button on this post, that counter above (that I see on the backend of this blog) will turn to 3,000. Three-motherFing-thousand. That’s a lot of posts. That’s a hell of a lot of music. But just as Rome wasn’t built in a day, that number took 6 years and 1 month to reach. So happy birthday to The Burning Ear. Happy 3,000th post to new bands. Happy remaining sanity in my music addled brain. And to celebrate those happys, I would like to revisit the same concept as this blog’s very first post and pay special attention to songs that I feel went under-appreciated. These are the jams that are considered stadium worth in my ears, even if they only ever garnered a few thousand plays on Soundcloud, YouTube, or Myspace (yes, this blog is that old…).

So read on for Part 1 of what I’m cleverly and succinctly titling The Best Underrated Songs of the Past 6 Years (3000 Posts) Feb 2009 – March 2015. Part 2 drops tomorrow (here), and Part 3 the next day. And then after that, look out for some stylistic changes here on The Burning Ear. It’s exciting times and I’m beyond stoked to share it with all you crazies. But now, some weird thoughts on these songs!

Love & Jams,

-Brandon B.

p.s. There is a playlist of all the songs at the bottom of the post so you can listen to them straight through.

[MP3] The Hundred in The Hands – “Keep It Low”

wait for me in times of trouble

♫ The Hundred in The Hands – Keep It Low

  • Who: Jason & Eleanore
  • What: Dark & Slippery, like Ghost Loft, Rhye, Haim
  • Where: NYC + Facebook
  • When: The “Keep It Low” single just came out and next LP Red Night is out June 24th.
  • Why: Even though their debit LP was kinda disappointing, The Hundred in the Hands had a solid EP before it and “Tom Tom” & “Dressed in Dresden” are two of my all time faves. So I give em a bit more slack. “Keep It Leans” a bit too dark and ambient for my groovability meter but it has grown on me. I’m looking forward to hearing what else they have cooked up.

The 25 Best Songs of 2010… Since Then (July-Dec.)

Here it is, for better or worse, for agreement or not, my list of the top 25 jams that rocked and/or rolled my ass during the second half of 2010. This is the 4th such list in TBE history and by far the most quality collection. There were  so many tracks that didn’t make the cut, and so many more that I think should be ranked higher. Can’t put ’em all in the top 10, now can I? Anyway, like all my lists, the ranking is loose. The quality, however, is tight as a drum… a tom-tom drum, perhaps…

25. ♫ Wiz Khalifa – Black & Yellow / Annnnd, this is why we don’t do year end lists before the YEAR ENDS. A late entry to my iTunes and an instant favorite. Swagger city up in this one! Push to start!

24. ♫ Fabolous – You Be Killin Em / Naw, Fabo, YOU be killen ’em. Niiice.

23. ♫ Muscles – Girl Crazy Go / Should be called “Brandon Crazy Go” cause that’s what happens. It’s like Read more

Remix Roundup Vol. 26 – 9.18.2010 [Ra Ra Riot, Big K.R.I.T., RAC, The Ting Tings, Crystal Castles, ARMS, The Ting Tings, etc…]

So props to Joel & Scott for dropping some of their remix knowledge on us last week. Look forward to more from them as I slowly relinquish my iron grip on this site’s content and open us all up to more sweet sweet jams! In the meantime I have a fresh batch of remixes from my own satchel of fun to share with you all! Quick, get to it, it’s Saturday!

♫ Clare Maguire – The Strangest Thing (Bloodshy & Avant Version) / Bloodshy & Avant continue their time honored tradition of making sounds I love. Spooky in the best way.

THE HUNDRED IN THE HANDS introduce TOM and TOM, two rock n roll GHOSTS

could’ve stood by you for days, I would forget the world for you

♫  The Hundred In The Hands – Tom Tom

After their first track as a band was one of the best jams of last year, The Hundred In The Hands went almost a full year before releasing another sound. I was initially underwhelmed by “Sleepwalking” but more recently “Ghosts” got me back back on board. Just yesterday I got my hands on the whole This Desert EP and now “Tom Tom” has clinched my excitement for their September full length. The percussion is out of this world and coupled with that sing-song keyboard line creates one of the grooviest jams I have heard in ages. While “Dressed In Dresden” was all riffing guitars and attacking drums, their newer stuff shows a much broader range that includes hazy and mellow moments while still keeping a few great beats around. Get in on this EP and then get pumped for September’s self-titled LP!!

} TBE Digest 9 – 5.16.2010 [Steel Train, MIA, Interpol, The Dead Weather, Eminem, … ]

Woah, so things got a bit out of control with this Digest, there are just a lot of new jams coming out and it’s tough to keep track of them all. I also decided to include a new section of new songs from bands I have already written about but who have something new. Anyway, dive in and gimmie your two cents in the comments!

The 20.9 Best Songs of 2009… So Far / Jan.-June

Art by Odili Donald Odita

Art by Odili Donald Odita

How freaking crazy is it that 2009 is already halfway over? What a crazy year so far, in so many ways, the least of which is all of the fantastic, surprising, and sometimes disappointing music that has come our way. TBE will be 5 months old in a week and we have been chronicling most of the year’s jams. Here are my top 20.9. I guarantee you wont agree with all of them but doesn’t that just make our friendship that much more deep and meaningful? Just so we are clear how I arrived at this particular order, I’ve selected my favorites from my top listens each month and then ordered them purely by total play count. I know that’s confusing but whatever, the list is after the jump.

The Hundred in The Hands get Dressed in Dresden

oh you think so?  well I know so

The Hundred In The Hands – Dressed In Dresden

Umm… excuse me? Yeah, you. Can we talk about something? Yeah? Good, cause this song is like KA-razy good and I can’t really handle it. Yeah, right? Like I’m not really feeling the poo-palette album art but then the song kicks into full gear and all is forgiven. ALL. Did you know that this is just two peeps from Brooklyn and this is the only song they have on the etherwebs? YEAH, neither did I! That’s cause nobody knows anything about this hand-clapping powerhouse except that the dude is from The Boggs. (Remind me to check them out.) So yeah, just watch your back yo, cause with more tunes like this these two could very well take over the (my) world.
