Well folks, this is it. The moment you have all been waiting for since I foolishly started this multipart post during SXSW. Make sure you have read Part 1 (60-41) and Part 2 (40-21) before diving into these jams. But without further ado, I present the top 20 Best Underrated Songs of the past 6 years. Listen to them closely and frequently. They deserve the love.  Read more

[EP] Trophy Wife – BRUXISM (w/ “Canopy Shade”)

louder now, i can hear your reflections, in the distance we’ve come

♫ Trophy Wife – Canopy Shade

  • Who: Jody, Ben, Kit
  • What: Twitchy electro dance, like Foals, Polarsets, St. Lucia
  • Where: Oxford, UK + Facebook
  • When: Buy Bruxism now.
  • Why: I loooved Trophy Wife’s 2010 jams “Microlite” and “Take This Night” but lost track of them after that. Only recently did I discover that they released this awesome Bruxism EP a year ago. Each song is supposedly named after a different sleeping disorder suffered by band member and has a different production collaborator. James Yuill worked on the title track while Foals’ Yannis Philippakis helmed “Wolf.” Perhaps my favorite of the 5 is opener “Canopy Shade” with the jumpy tropical dance vibe I can’t get enough of. I hope they keep producing more jams this tight and dont keep them such a secret next time.

[MIX] TBE Presents: The Tropical Assault Summer Mix

Artwork by Jacob Youngblood Ziegler

If the TBE 2011 Summer Mega-Mix taught us anything its that summer isn’t over until we say it is! This Tropical Assault mix is our final battle against the forces of autumn, seemingly lurking at every turn these past months. We will not down with out a fight and thankfully there are 14 finely tuned weapons at our disposal, poised and ready to be unleashed on any ear feeling the slightest bit of frost. So throw back the curtains, turn up the speakers, bask in that fantastic artwork, and let’s take summer by it’s horns.

Whereas the Mega-Mix flowed through genres like a summer’s day’s variety of cocktails, this mix is a more hardened and focused thing, culling the collective forces of all things tropical. Whether it be steel drums, bongos, sunny synths, or just a splash of sea water, these songs share that certain tropical something that has been infecting my ears so much lately. Summer on! Read more

Holy cow. It was exactly 2 years ago (!?) today that I launched The Burning Ear from the butt wedge of my old couch. Since then it’s been nothing but a pleasure to share all of these great jams with you guys and gals. To all you regular readers and commenters, I love you all and look forward to another two! However, we all know 2 years olds don’t have patience for speeches so lets get right to the presents! I’ve got three gifts for you all, of which the first TWO are based on the number 2! Read more

The 25 Best Songs of 2010… Since Then (July-Dec.)

Here it is, for better or worse, for agreement or not, my list of the top 25 jams that rocked and/or rolled my ass during the second half of 2010. This is the 4th such list in TBE history and by far the most quality collection. There were  so many tracks that didn’t make the cut, and so many more that I think should be ranked higher. Can’t put ’em all in the top 10, now can I? Anyway, like all my lists, the ranking is loose. The quality, however, is tight as a drum… a tom-tom drum, perhaps…

25. ♫ Wiz Khalifa – Black & Yellow / Annnnd, this is why we don’t do year end lists before the YEAR ENDS. A late entry to my iTunes and an instant favorite. Swagger city up in this one! Push to start!

24. ♫ Fabolous – You Be Killin Em / Naw, Fabo, YOU be killen ’em. Niiice.

23. ♫ Muscles – Girl Crazy Go / Should be called “Brandon Crazy Go” cause that’s what happens. It’s like Read more

♫ Trophy Wife- Microlite (Zen Death Squad Remix) / Brandon intruduced us all to Trophy Wife back in September.  He also featured the acoustic version of “Microlite” in his TBE Digest.  This week we’re blowing things up with this explosive remix by London’s Zen Death Squad.

♫ Ellie Goulding- Salt Skin (Azedia Remix) / There is a disturbing amount of good music coming out of the UK right now and Azedia are no exception to the rule.  The production trio from London provide us with one of the better remixes of 2010.  Enjoy.

[MP3] TROPHY WIFE don’t TAKE much time getting into with THIS jam to play at NIGHT

won’t you show me how to dance, dance, dance, i will take this night to a different place

♫ Trophy Wife – Take This Night

If there is any bit of sunlight where you are then this is the jam to play as you bask in it’s fading rays of warmth. Hailing from rainy Oxford, England, these guys sure know how to infuse hazy warmth into their breezy jams. If you are hearing some Foals in there then you won’t be surprised to know that both bands hail from the same town (neigborhood even) and are now even on tour together. That’s a show I would love to see. Of the 2 tracks on their MySpace, “Take This Night” is not even one of them but it is certainly a promising piece of pop from a band I hope to hearing much more from soon. This guy is also really stoked.
