} TBE Digest 6 – 2.24.10 [Gorillaz, Lil Wayne, Major Lazer, B.o.B., Broken Social Scene, …]

These Digest’s are tough to do because there are really only two emotions I feel while writing them: disappointment and bewilderment. The former for bands I love that are delivering sub-par baloney and the latter for bands other people love who are delivering sub-par baloney. These opinions are of course only my own and that’s why I persist with this series, because others may be really into these tracks and that is great. Different strokes, ya know. On the other hand, some may just be curious as to what different bands are up to these days. Read it for any reason you want, but know that I write it out of a simple desire to pass along the recent happenings in my musical world that I don’t feel are worthy of their own post. (There seemed to have been some confusion last time) Anyway, read on, trudge through, wade in, sally forth, whatever, just know that this edition is exceptionally long for whatever reason but there are some fun covers awaiting you at the end.

♫ Gorillaz – Stylo ft. Bobby Womack & Mos Def / Damn, Albarn and Co. done fell off. I’ve never loved Gorillaz but they have a couple great jams. This, however, is about as dull as it gets. Oh wait, I forgot about the rest of Plastic Beach, their near 90 minute long (wtf?) upcoming LP. It was not easy to get through that thing. Depressing.

♫ Ok Go – WTF? / Speaking of WTF, this is the latest from Ok Go whose Of The Blue Color Of The Sky has been underwhelming me lately. Again, never a favorite but they always have great videos and their last album had a few sweet jams and I’d gladly listen to it over Of The Blue. WTF, guys?

♫ Los Campesinos! – Romance is Boring / I’ll take boring over annoying any day. Exclamation-point rights should be rescinded.

♫ Lil Wayne – Knockout (Feat. Nicki Minaj) / Yes, it’s true. Rebirth, Lil Wayne’s “rock” album is a pile of shit. Dude is heading off to jail and leaving this turd-collection his parting gesture? Yowza. The diamond in the proverbial rough is this “passable” party jam in which I am urged to rock slightly more than I am to press skip. The best moments are definitely when Weezy shuts up and let’s Minaj do her thing. Tough times.

♫ David Byrne & Fatboy Slim – Please Don’t (Feat. Santigold) / The latest chapter in Byrne’s quest to collaborate with every relevant musician in the world has led him to make a concept album withfatboy Slim that is based on the life of Imelda Marcos, the dead shoe-obsessed widow of the former Philippine dictator. It guests a million artists and sounds like this. It’s not bad but not great. Investigate further on your own time.

♫ Major Lazer – Sound of Siren ft. Busy Signal & M.I.A. / After ripping everyone’s mind a new asshole last year Major Lazer is back with the Lazers Never Die EP in April. This is the a new track off of it and I’m not down. Not nearly as good as anything on Guns Don’t Kill People and as far as I’m concerned, further proof that M.I.A. is vastly overrated.

♫ B.o.B – Bet I feat Playboy Tre / Seeing B.o.B live with Playboy Tre was one of the highlights of my last summer and so maybe I’ve got high expectations but I’m just not feeling this new B.o.B jam. Just sounds like generic rap filler to me. And what happened to his Bobby Ray moniker? And why no period after the second B?

♫ Kate Nash – I Just Love You More / I miss the old Kate Nash. This girl seems like she is trying to prove her maturity way too hard. Youthful pop is OK, Kate, don’t let anyone tell you otherwise.

♫ Operator Please – Logic / What is it with all these former prodigies growing up and making less interesting music?

♫ Goldfrapp – Rocket / I’ve never been into Goldfrapp but that doesn’t mean I won’t be someday. It just wont start with this new single. “Rocket” just makes me wish Ladyhawke had a new album coming out. I miss Ladyhawke.

♫ Broken Social Scene – World Sick / I love exactly one song from this beloved Canadian crew and it is not this one. A new album is forthcoming for all of you who think less of me now.

♫ The New Pornographers – Your Hands (Together) / Exactly as above. (Except I have yet to find that “one song.”)

♫ Rox – My Baby Left Me / This chick is all up in the UK charts and I guess I can see why. Feels like it’s been done before.

Covers Corner

♫ Barbara – Pursuit of Happiness (Kid CuDi Cover) / I am fascinated by the persistent quality of Kid Cudi related tracks that are produced without any of his involvement. Big ups to Barbara for this reworking. I can almost believe the lyrics now.

♫ Holy Ghost – On Board (Friendly Fires cover) / TBE faves collide as Holy Ghost take on Friendly Fires’ “On Board.” Not the best cover in the world but interesting nonetheless.

I too have felt underwhelmed by a lot of these highly anticipated new releases … :/ feel like I ditto almost every point in this post.

on the New Pornographers, though: how about “The Bleeding Heart Show”? that's their “one song” for me (just so epic and joyful)

Yeah, tough times with all these bands :(

I haven't heard that one? I have Electric Vision and Mass Romantic and a few other random tracks but perhaps I need to “investigate Bleeding Heart Show” Thanks!

Haha, wtf! Kate Nash! I really don't know what to say about this track. It sounds like she's trying to channel Karen O! Ditto on missing Ladyhawke! I want more Ladyhawke too!

My first time at this blog and I'm finding it way too bitchy and negative to stay. But thanks for the Holy Ghost song.

Cale, I'm assuming you didn't read any other posts? I'm a pretty upbeat and optimistic dude and so is TBE but the Digest is my one forum for venting my disappointment with tracks/bands I was expecting more from. I also suspect that some people appreciate the one-stop-shopping factor for getting updated on recent stuff. Anyway, to each their own, you may just not like TBE and that's cool. I'd hate to see you go without checking anything else out though. How about this post about another dude named Cale?

In any case, I'm glad you found some solace in the Holy Ghost cover :)

first post I read on here, and to say the least i was put off by the negativity. That was until I listened to the songs, and realized that you were right (with the exception of the new pornographers and Broken social scene but then I'm Canadian and grew up on them).
So keep the good work up

Haha, I hear ya on the Canadian pride/solidarity. And sorry about almost turning you off. I could put these digests up without writing anything but that just seems weird. Venture further into the site for TONS of positivity to remedy things :)

Yeah, tough crowd :) I hope I'm not turning you regular readers off with the
    negativity.

I have to admit that the Lil Wayne jam has gone un-skipped a few times when
it pops up in my Feb playlist. I can kinda get down with it :)
