Tower – “Can’t Vibe”

Big shameless synths and a hint of dubby bass collide under shiny falsetto vocals to ignite the dance jam that is “Can’t Vibe”. Los Angeles’s Tower has only put this one song out so far but I’m damn excited for more.

I think Barrett’s referring to the lack of a site-wide music player that can be controlled independent of the page which a track was originally played from. A separate tab has to be kept open for a song to keep playing even when someone wants to navigate other articles on TBE.

Sorry to sound trolly, but I really don’t like that you have to click into each post to play a song. I also miss the straight forward “here’s the song, here’s what it’s like, here’s what I think” format of the intro text. There’s no real incentive to click a post based on the “preview” content unless the name is recognizable or the image is pretty. You’re also featuring ads now that have sound and (at least for me) have been interrupting the music.

I do like the addition of labels to the post types, the stationary header nav, and the use of the “above the fold” space. The new player works really nice too. Just feel like I’m expected to click on a lot just to get to a song… that I then may not want to listen to. My team just redesigned our site at work, so my brain is saturated on this stuff right now and the new functionality reads as driving me into your site technically, but actually away from your content at the same time because it drives to a dead end (no “go back” option at the end of the post). It’s click in -> play, sit, wait -> page back or close out. VS Play, continue to scroll, play new song, old song stops playing. You should consider endless scroll with expanding posts and click-ins for commenting.

Thanks for all the notes! This is valuable stuff. I’m not a developer or designer so my personal abilities are limited :(

I’ll see what I can do!

I have to agree with Barrett. I love your blog and have been an avid reader for years, but I find myself checking in less and less. I miss the days where it was simple. I liked reading what lyrics you liked. And I liked reading your opinions of the song. If I didn’t like the song I could scroll down and play a new one. I don’t like having to click into the post to hear the song. Sorry, didn’t want to sound so critical as I love your blog, just wanted to give you an honest idea of why I no longer really check it. I’m not really sure what’s going on on the front page anymore.

Thanks for introducing me to so many awesome songs over the years!

The new layout sucks. I agree the simplicity has better and I am far less motivated to come back to the site. It was so much better when you just clicked a song, scrolled, and clicked the next song. Everything else is too much and way too slow.

Admiring the dedication you put into your website and in depth information you offer. It’s nice to come across a blog every once in a while that isn’t the same out of date rehashed material. Great read! I’ve bookmarked your site and I’m adding your RSS feeds to my Google account.
