♫ James Vincent McMorrow – If I Had A Boat

Vagrant Records has come a long way since their early days of punk and emo, recently releasing albums from The Eels and Edward Sharpe. Dublin’s James Vincent McMorrow continues to broaden their catalog with his debut LP Early In The Morning. The album dropped last year in Ireland and The UK but the rest of us are probably just now catching on to this man’s endless talents (like his great cover of “Whip My Hair?”). “If I Had A Boat” starts the album off, introducing our ears to the silky scratch of McMorrows voice and his sparse yet moving instrumentation (of which he plays everything!). As he lays his stories out for us, McMorrow plays nicely with elements of country, folk, and even soul. The whole album makes for great headphone music to get lost in or even background music to a mellow day at home. My favorite track may be “We Don’t Eat” which you dub-heads may remember from it’s stellar Adventure Club remix.

The original version is a fragile thing of piano and strings that takes it’s time before blossoming into a ear-opening song that I find instantly wanting to repeat. Early In The Morning flexes a bit of muscle at points, letting off a bit of steam with some slightly more energetic arrangements, but on the whole remains a soothing experience. What better accompaniment to the bird-songs of spring time?
