Peaches – I Feel Cream

I’ve never liked Peaches’ music. She was always more interesting to talk about than listen to. With her 4th album, I Feel Cream, dropping last week she revealed a new side to herself. Kind of. I’ll get to the good stuff but let me just unload a bit first. Despite producers like Soulwax, Digitalism, and Simian Mobile Disco on board, the album is still bloated with unfunny “shock” lyrics and dumb party anthems. One of the first singles, “More,” is only four tracks in but has Peaches repeating “seems you got a little bit more than you asked for” over and over. Did we really, Peaches? Did we get more? “Billionaire” has rhymes and delivery that make Asher Roth look like 2 Pac and “Serpentine” is a boring meditation on how awesome Peaches is because she has a mullet. Is this 2002? I mean even the other single “Talk To Me” feels like a half baked version of The Gossip’s anthemic “Standing In The Way Of Control.” Although I don’t get it, it somehow seems like everyone else is “feeling the cream” because the album is getting rave reviews. But really I Feel Cream is not completely spoiled. Peaches quits fronting for a few tracks and flexes her surprisingly excellent voice, showing a tender side that doesn’t make me cringe. The rave up “I Feel Cream” has only brief rapping and it’s tolerably nestled in between her soaring vocals. The real standout is “Lose You” where Peaches goes all soft on us for an actually beautiful song. Now that she is 40 let’s hope her next album continues in this more mature vein and she finally leaves the gender commentary and shock value at home.

I really like “Talk to Me”, even better than Gossip’s “Standing in the Way of Control” (although it’s a tie with the Soulwax remix), but the rest of the album doesn’t hold my attention for long. I’m going to have another listen though.

Watch the Andy Griffith Show mashed up with “Fuck the Pain Away”. Very entertaining.
